My sis & I had such great timing booking this! Of course, it's great to see the sunset, but it was a full moon, & part of the Nights of Lights! It was fun to tell people we were being "chased" by the Black Raven pirate ship too! Wonderful staff, excellent experience! A couple suggested a "mutiny" because all of us didn't want to get off the ship LOL! We even saw dolphins!

Nice tall ship, 4 sails, complimentary drinks, nice crew that work together to make sure we were comfortable and safe. Beautiful night in St. AUGUSTINE, FL. Reasonable price.

My wife and I just moved to Jacksonville last year, and are loving St. Augustine - especially the Nights of Lights celebration in December. Last year we did the Trolley Tour, but this year we wanted to try something different, so we booked the Nights of Lights Sunset Cruise on the Schooner Freedom. We’re so glad we did! The boat itself is well-laid-out and scrupulously clean, no small fleet for an actual sailing vessel. The captain and crew warmly welcomed us on board, and kept us well-supplied with liquid refreshments while explaining to us the boat and its workings as well as the local area and the landmarks we were seeing. We had beautiful weather and a lovely sunset, seeing plenty of the scenic beauty of the city (including the Bridge of Lions, which we passed under), and on our return trip we saw the gorgeous city light setup. On our trip we even got a little unplanned extra - a great view of a rocket launching from Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center! Everyone aboard seemed to be having a great time, both passengers and crew. Overall, couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Such a fantastic trip! This boat is family owned and you can tell - they really take pride in what they do. Expertly sailed - very smooth trip - and enjoyable crew. They weee also very knowledgeable about the area, answering all our questions without lecturing. Very relaxing. Free beverages were a great perk. Would highly recommend.

This is a must do. The crew was very experienced, Capt Evan, Jack, Martin and even the newest member, Daisy. They were great hosts for the Night of Lights and Capt Evan maneuvered the harbor to give us the mist amazing views of the lights! Romantic scene for couples, bring your own drinks and snacks if you want, but they can treat you as well!

If you enjoy sailing, this is a great experience. This is a great family business that's passionate about sailing and they LOVE sailing this boat and making sure you have a great time. It was incredible watching them navigate the river, hearing their answers to questions from passengers and watching them work the sails. Skip the motor cruises and get on this boat. You'll witness true skill and great seamanship.
Details:
They kicked it off with champagne and offered drinks throughout the sail and some brought their own food and beverage.
Dog-friendly!
Pro tip: use the bathroom before you get on board or prepare to test your aim.

It was fascinating being aboard a boat under sail, watching the sails being hoisted and the boom swung and adjusted, and getting an appreciation for all the gear and expertise required to man it! The crew was wonderful and each member made an effort to share their knowledge, converse, answer any questions we had, and make us feel at home on the boat.

The entire crew of the sailing vessel Schooner Freedom was amazing!!! Booking them to charter our wedding ceremony was the absolute best decision we made. I cannot say enough how breathtaking the sail was, and how beautifully seamless the ceremony went. We could not have asked for a better wedding vibe!!!! Seeing all our friends and family come together on a sailboat to watch us “Tie the Knot” made for such a perfect day.
Thank you, Captain Evan, Jack, Mackenzie, Martin, and Gina for making our special day a memorable one.
Much love,
Ken & Melissa Saufl

Does the cruise go on rain or shine?

I am not certain, but believe that they would go out in light rain with ponchos. However, a thunderstorm or hard rain would likely = cancel and re-book. You would probably have to call them to me certain of the official policy.

Do people ever get seasick on these sails? We are considering a family day sail the end of June.

It would depend on if you have ever been affected by motion sickness and also the conditions while sailing ... we experienced a very smooth lovely sunset sail but I imagine in rougher waters it could be quite rocky . If prone to motion sickness I would suggest taking some sort of motion sickness medication prior to sailing .

Are there restrooms on this boat? Also, would a six year old girl enjoy it?

Yes, there is a "head" below deck and I think a 6 year old would love it. She would probably get to help unfurl the sails. We say dolphins so that would be cool for her as well. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

Is the schooner accessible to someone who travels by wheelchair primarily but can walk a bit with assistance.
Sydney
St. Augustine, FL
Hello!
Yes, we are accessible for that situation. I would recommend bringing the wheelchair to use to get down to the boat, as we are at the end of the dock. Once you reach the boat, there are 4 wide, household sized steps up to the boat with a short 1 inch gap over to the deck. We have 2 crew members there to help you on board. We can then store the wheelchair either in the office or below decks on board.
Thanks and we hope to set sail with you soon!

How good is this cruise for a couple with bad knees? We cant stand for a long period of time or do too many stairs!
Sydney
St. Augustine, FL
Hi Terri!
We have cushioned bench seating for everyone on board, so you do not need to stand on board. To get up to the boat, there are four stairs - they are wide stairs with handrails on either side, so I think that you should be fine!
Thank you so much for your interest in the Schooner Freedom and we hope to set sail with you soon.

Where does the trip take us during the two hours?
Sydney
St. Augustine, FL
Hi Kim B! Whether you chose a Day Sail, Sunset Sail, or a Full Moon Sail, we can promise you one thing – we will sail our pants off! The Freedom is a traditionally rigged schooner and we take extreme pride in sailing her and sailing her well. We hate the hum of the engine and we won’t use it if it’s humanly possible. We burn a gallon of diesel an hour and we average less than 3/4 of a tank per trip = we are lean, green sailing machines! Since our objective is sailing, we don’t have a set path – it depends entirely on the wind, weather, and current at the time of the sail. Our options for sailing are north or south along the Matanzas River, offshore in the Atlantic Ocean, or north on the Tolomato River - each trip is different. I hope this answers your questions!
