We had an amazing time. After living in Key West your several years and moving north we had missed doing an evening sail. We had a fantastic time. For those complaining about social distancing or the changing of what's included on the trip changing due to covid-19, stay home and don't go. The crew did an amazing job and have adapted well to ever changing rules and regulations. Blake's and drinks provided. We took a small snack and loved watching the sun go down over the city and the Christmas lights come on. So much fun and so relaxing. We will be returning again and again.

The sunset sail was a fantastic activity to do with our family. Everyone gets a “good seat” no matter where you sit on the deck. The sailing was smooth and we were thankful that the weather was comfortable and the skies were clear for a lovely sunset. The view was mainly of houses and moored boats and not the city or fort, so although it wasn’t very exciting, it was still nice to be out on the water. We were also able to see some dolphins, which is always fun.
Captain Steve and crew members, Hope and Lauren, were all very friendly, engaging, and happy to attend to all the guests throughout the two hour trip. The beverage selection is very limited but serves its purpose to quench your thirst if necessary. The crew was constantly asking everyone if they needed a refill, so that was nice that they made such an effort to do so.
We look forward to sailing again on Freedom in the future, and hope to maybe enjoy a different route for a more scenic view.

Captain Steve and his crew were great. We had about a 2 1/2 hour sunset cruise and everything was perfect from the weather to the the crew to the boat. The crew, when not adjusting the sails, were extremely professionally and personable. The continually rotated around the deck interacting with the guest, offering drinks, and even offer to take pictures for us. The schooner was very comfortable and appeared to be highly maintained. This was my wife’s first time on any kind of sailboat and she wants to go again. I would highly recommend this.

Disappointed! Booked Sunset cruise 3 days prior to our sail. The sunset cruise stated complimentary refreshments which included beer and wine. We received a call 6 1/2 hours before the cruise and was told due to Covid 19 and county restrictions they would not provide any beer or wine but you could bring your own. Asked if there was a place to purchase refreshments close to the boat and was told across the street from the pier. The cost/price of the sunset cruise would not be reduced even though it was to include refreshments. Also told that they may not have provisions to keep the drinks you bring cold. When we got to the pier there was no market or store to purchase beer or wine. When we checked in at the office we were told to use the bathroom at the dock, the restroom on the boat was only for emergencies. We were offered water or soda when we got to our seat and that was the end of refreshments offered to us for the rest of the trip. Social distance on the boat was 1-2 ft from the next guest. Would not return or recommend to anyone. Ended up being the only disappointing part of our stay in St Augustine.

I'm am sorry that you did not have a good time. In twenty years of business this is the worst review we have ever received. I take every review personally to heart and it is our goal to to make sure everyone has a good time. We pride ourselves on people enjoying the sailing aspect of the trip and the beauty St Augustine has to offer from the water. We do not focus on the drinks nor does it say anywhere on our website what drinks are included. These are not normal times and Unfortunately our hands are tied on certain things that we cant change;it is out of our control. This is new territory that we all of us are trying to get through it. We are a small family owned business trying to survive and still be responsible to our passengers and employees while following state laws.
On the social distancing part we are licensed for 41 ppl we only put 24 to 25 people on board per trip on a 76 ft boat that is enough room for everyone to be 6 ft apart. In addressing the bathroom we are just trying to cut down on the spread of covid that is all,but as you were told a bathroom is provided for you and was there for your use.If you didn't feel comfortable with the seating or didnt like the drink policy you simply didn't have to go . I wish you would have spoken to us personally or you can still call me to discuss.
I am always available.

We originally booked a day sail but the company rebooked us for a sunset sail at no extra charge when the day sail was cancelled. It was a great trip - lots of wind so we really sailed. The direction they take depends upon the wind so no sail is the same. The crew of Taylor, Noah and Hope were very attentive and able to answer just about any question they were asked. Captain Evan introduced himself to every passenger and shared lots of information about the St Augustine area. It was a little too cloudy for a perfect sunset but the dolphins did make an appearance. Thanks to all for a great sail!!

Capt. Steve & his three man crew were amazing at making our large party feel safe and welcome on the waves. This was my first time in a sailing ship and I cannot wait to go back.

We made a last minute decision to book an evening cruise. We weren't dissapointed. Captain Steve & his crew (all female) were pleasant, engaging and made the evening so memorable. We were able to see a launch from Cape Caneveral which added the our special evening. You won't be dissapointed by booking this cruise on your visit to St Augustine.

If you enjoy sailing, this is a great experience. This is a great family business that's passionate about sailing and they LOVE sailing this boat and making sure you have a great time. It was incredible watching them navigate the river, hearing their answers to questions from passengers and watching them work the sails. Skip the motor cruises and get on this boat. You'll witness true skill and great seamanship.
Details:
They kicked it off with champagne and offered drinks throughout the sail and some brought their own food and beverage.
Dog-friendly!
Pro tip: use the bathroom before you get on board or prepare to test your aim.

In the past year, I've had a few visitors from my family in England visit us and we always take them to St Augustine. I had seen a story about Schooner Freedom on Spectrum News and thought it was a great idea to see a different side of St Augustine. Sydney, Captain Austin and the crew made sure we had a great sail. My husband helped hoist one of the sails and my 6 year old son helped Sydney with a small sail. A great experience for both of them. The were generous with the wine and conversation. The sunset was beautiful as was the new views we saw of St Augustine.

If you are a person of a certain age you'll remember a song "Sailing" by Christopher Cross,
"Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me."
And it rings true on the Schooner Freedom. The day was perfect, the crew was engaging and welcoming, and the intracoastal waterway was perfect.
Two hours of pure bliss were upon me and I had no idea I'd be so relaxed that my watch thought I was sleeping! Watching the crew pull and push while I sat there and just marinated in the sea wind seemed a tad indulgent, but that was my job for the cruise. (They have taken precautions for COVID-19 and were running at about 1/2 - 2/3 capacity, so make sure that you get your cruise reserved! Drinks are provided and stories abound during your time aboard.
Their office is located right near the Bridge of Lions on the town side of St. Augustine.
Truly a pleasure to enjoy and very worth your time!

Does the cruise go on rain or shine?
Written September 29, 2017
I am not certain, but believe that they would go out in light rain with ponchos. However, a thunderstorm or hard rain would likely = cancel and re-book. You would probably have to call them to me certain of the official policy.

Do people ever get seasick on these sails? We are considering a family day sail the end of June.
Written June 19, 2017
It would depend on if you have ever been affected by motion sickness and also the conditions while sailing ... we experienced a very smooth lovely sunset sail but I imagine in rougher waters it could be quite rocky . If prone to motion sickness I would suggest taking some sort of motion sickness medication prior to sailing .

Are there restrooms on this boat? Also, would a six year old girl enjoy it?
Written June 22, 2016
Yes, there is a "head" below deck and I think a 6 year old would love it. She would probably get to help unfurl the sails. We say dolphins so that would be cool for her as well. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

Is the schooner accessible to someone who travels by wheelchair primarily but can walk a bit with assistance.
Written August 7, 2015

Hello!
Yes, we are accessible for that situation. I would recommend bringing the wheelchair to use to get down to the boat, as we are at the end of the dock. Once you reach the boat, there are 4 wide, household sized steps up to the boat with a short 1 inch gap over to the deck. We have 2 crew members there to help you on board. We can then store the wheelchair either in the office or below decks on board.
Thanks and we hope to set sail with you soon!

How good is this cruise for a couple with bad knees? We cant stand for a long period of time or do too many stairs!

Hi Terri!
We have cushioned bench seating for everyone on board, so you do not need to stand on board. To get up to the boat, there are four stairs - they are wide stairs with handrails on either side, so I think that you should be fine!
Thank you so much for your interest in the Schooner Freedom and we hope to set sail with you soon.

Hi Kim B! Whether you chose a Day Sail, Sunset Sail, or a Full Moon Sail, we can promise you one thing – we will sail our pants off! The Freedom is a traditionally rigged schooner and we take extreme pride in sailing her and sailing her well. We hate the hum of the engine and we won’t use it if it’s humanly possible. We burn a gallon of diesel an hour and we average less than 3/4 of a tank per trip = we are lean, green sailing machines! Since our objective is sailing, we don’t have a set path – it depends entirely on the wind, weather, and current at the time of the sail. Our options for sailing are north or south along the Matanzas River, offshore in the Atlantic Ocean, or north on the Tolomato River - each trip is different. I hope this answers your questions!
