Overview
More
The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.

There's not much not to like about the Ravine Gardens. There are walking trails around the rim and many down in the ravine to explore. In the spring the Azaleas are outstanding as are the many trees that surround the park.

I love walking this park. There are benches along the way to sit and ponder the wonder of this Ravine in the middle Florida. Great place fir your kids to play & have a picnic.

We were pleasantly surprised by this park - FL is rather flat, so the ravines were a fantastic change. The suspension bridges were lovely over the water/bogs. We went for the azalea festival and had a lovely time exploring. Be sure and stop by the...More

The walk through, the Ravines, is a challlenging one, with many inclines. If you are not use to the Florida heat, best to go in the winter months. March and April are best for seeing so many flowers. Wildlife is plentiful. Birds, butterflies, raccoons, squirrels...More

Ravine Gardens is a very nice uncrowded state park. It was very beautiful and quiet. There are alligators in there but we did not see one. Nice walking trails but if you have bad knee's there are a lot of stairs. I would go there...More

Interesting trails with roots to maneuver over and lots to look at. We found some plants still surviving from it being landscaped at one time and there was quite a bit of bamboo. We unfortunately did not see any wildlife except lizards. We loved the...More

It's a wonderful drive through with many places where you can stop, park, and explore without having to be on foot through the entire park.
