The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.

The second time I came here was better than the first. I realized I missed another bridge and many more trails. So pretty and serene.

I visited this park today and was pleasantly surprised. I walked through several paths and found some springs with water bubbling up from them. There are some trails to walk on but be cautious because some of them are easy for you to lose your footing. There is a nice suspension bridge to walk over also. The park is kept... More

We just did the drive around the park, as this was not a planned stop & we were not prepared for walking. We did stop at many stops along the drive, to look down the ravine. There were many trails & bridges along the way. We missed the azaleas by a few weeks, yet was still very beautiful. It was... More

This is a unique park that with beautiful gardens and several easy hiking trails, but what makes it's the swinging bridges and small but cute waterwheel that made it worth the trip. Our dogs seeemed to enjoy it as much as we did.

Sadly we missed the azalea bloom by 10-14 days. Still an enjoyable place. So much so that I plan to come back but ONLY after I absolutely know the azaleas are in bloom. My wife and I live in Tampa so a jaunt up here as a spur of the moment thing is a strong possibility. The hiking though not strenuous... More

Ravine gardens is totally worth going to! There is a playground for the kiddos and there is a workout area. It is so beautiful with all of the azalea's blooming. My dream is to be on a track and field team, so I enjoy jogging through the trails and on the road, but you have to be careful and look... More

Ravine Gardens is a great place to walk or drive to observe nature at it's finest. The azaleas weren't as lush this year because of the drought but still beautiful, and if you walk along the river you might just see a gator!

About 45 minutes from St. Augustine and worth the drive if you need a break from the rude shop and restaurant employees who hate tourists and show it. There are 3 miles or so of trails through the woods and several picnic tables if you want to make a day of it. At an admission price of only $5, it... More
