The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.

Traditional State Park from the past.

Beautiful when the azaleas are in seasonal bloom with some dogwoods, too. A visit to Old Florida of the 30s, when cars were a novelty, a motoring tourist were beginning to arrive.

We walked the road looking down and enjoying the vegetation. There was some history but not much. I would like to know a bit more of the history. It seemed to indicate in the 30s much of this was done for the town owned it. Why is there a trellis? What is the water works for? There is a water... More

The website for this park is beautiful and enticing. Traveled 68 miles to get there. What a disappointment. We went on New Years Day so the gate was not manned. Paying was on the honor system, put your money in an envelope and drop it in the slot. There is a nice building with rest rooms. A map is provided.... More

We drove here on Christmas Eve from Jacksonville to get away from the city during the holidays. Taking the bikes and exploring the beauty of this park was PERFECT. There is so much to see and so many neat features to Ravine Gardens. I will definitely be returning here in 2017. Make sure you bring your bike, some snacks, and... More

We spent three hours trekking through the woods, it felt like minutes. We had so much fun getting lost in all the wonder this park has to offer. I recommend getting a map first, we went without it and missed a few things as we went along. I'd also plan on going to a few of the local springs while... More

Ravine Gardens is absolutely gorgeous. The paved Trail is approximately 2 miles, however it is accessible by car. There is a lovely suspension bridge - a must see. I definitely recommend going to Ravine Gardens when visiting near the area.

I drove to Ravine Gardens on one of my days off on a whim, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The parking and fee set-up was a little confusing, and I wish I could have found a map of the site, but I enjoyed the brief time I spent there. I would love to come back when the azaleas... More

We never expected a deep ravine with gardens, paths and unique topography in the middle of Florida!! There are several different trails to explore and wonderful suspension bridges. There Is also a picturesque paved drive around the ravine. We walked one of the trails but did see where there are places to pull off in the more interesting vistas if... More

This park is great for a morning or afternoon hike. The trails offer more of a hilly experience than is usual for Florida; and the old WPA landscaping, trail support structures, and bridges are visually appealing and interesting.
