Worth the Visit
Jul 2021 • Family
There is so much to do, see and eat here all within walking distance of your hotel if you choose to stay along this drive. We enjoy taking weekend trips and visiting the area. This area also proves there is more to Orlando than just theme parks!

One stop shop!

A great spot in downtown Orlando that is close to Universal and the Convention Center. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shopping down this area and many of which are great places to go that are not theme parks. This area is filled with tourists most of the time and can get very busy, so plan before you go. A great spot to check out if you are looking for restaurants away from the park.

Been There, Done That

We started in the area of the Convention Center and walked about 2.5 miles north back to our hotel. A lot of things are still not up to 100% because of the pandemic. Maybe I am only looking at it as "average" because I've had so many other fabulous travel experiences outside the U.S. It's just hotels, places to eat, and a few touristy junk shops selling knock-off Disney merchandise, t-shirts, and the usual shot glasses and key chains.

There are certainly plenty of decent eating places for all budgets. There ARE a couple of locations with "rides" like the giant "EYE" ferris wheel, but I don't have any interest in riding something that moves at a snail's pace and costs a small fortune. We did visit Howl At The Moon (piano bar) on Friday evening and had a great time, but that is the nature of that type of venue. Everyone is singing, dancing, laughing, and making "new best friends" after a few libations.

We went for a weekend anniversary getaway, but have been to Orlando many times over the past nearly-30 years so we aren't as impressed as (for example) a family from the Heartland who has never been to a large city with all the lights and activity.

If you are walking I-Drive on a hot day, the area closer to the Convention Center has a lot of beautiful old trees and is shady. The closer you get to Sand Lake Drive, the trees disappear and you are left sweltering in the full sun. North of Sand Lake Drive is nothing to be terribly excited about anyway.

Again, it is exciting for someone who may never have been to a city, and as a kid I would have loved it, but as a traveled adult, it is just "ok." Our favorite thing was the pool at our Avanti Resort and Conference Center! Nice pool but noisy rooms!!! But that's for a different review.

Lots to do here: a French bakery, a live music venue, the Museum of Illusions. Great place to come and walk around for a couple hours.

Great place to walk around for the day. International Drive (I-4) has a section with tons to do for a family. Museums, interactive activities, go-karts, fair rides, plenty of places to eat.

Everything You Want Is Here

I-Drive has a variety of restaurants, with different price points and many with patio seating. There's an endless array of gift shops if you're looking to bring home some souvenirs. You've also got lots of entertainment options...from a comedy club to the ferris wheel, from Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum to Ripley's Believe It or Not...and more. There's never a dull moment on I-Drive.

We definitely enjoyed walking up and down I-Drive, with so many options of restaurants to choose from. We also enjoyed the nightlife with a few cool bars and the Orlando Eye!
