Great place. But beware of the Yellow fly. Was bitten three separate occasions. Extremely painful experience.

The boardwalk was made of trex boards and appeared brand new / very well maintained .
Could easily use a wheelchair on the boardwalk . We saw several alligators lying near the boardwalk - baby sized alligators but still pretty cool . At the end of boardwalk was a sitting area to observe the Lake . Definitely will go back again . We went around 11 am - noon time .

Great walk! So glad it was preserved and not developed.

Trail to lake is 2/3 mile each way over boardwalks and is lovely. Saw noisy ducks, small alligators and a snake. Hummock trail is more wooded. Not crowded. AM walk is best in warmer seasons.

Great walk!

We walked to the lake. The boardwalk is a little more than a mile in and out. Beautiful nature scenery. Many birds and animals but we did not see any. It was a beautiful day though, great weather too!

Beautiful park. Saw several birds, an alligator, a turtle, big beautiful butterflies, and lots of lush greenery. So glad we decided to check this park out.

Very nice place for a good walk and enjoy the nature with family and friends. The view of the Apopka lake is awesome! You can see some animals like turtles and alligators around the area.

We saw baby alligators, turtles and an American Bullfrog. The rescue next door also had a zebra that we saw when walking on a trail.

Nice place for a hike.

Decent walking trails. Nature center was closed but some outside exhibits were available. Restrooms are open even though the center is closed - they were clean.
Really liked the boardwalk to Lake Apopka.

Easy walking trails

We visited the Oakland Nature Preserve on January 2 and had a great time. There are 8 hiking trails on the preserve, The one that interested us the most was the Boardwalk Trail which goes from the Welcome Center directly out to Lake Apopka. The trail is about 0.7 miles one way and is level. Those of us living in Central Florida for years have read about the incredible pollution that has occurred in the lake. At the landing at the end of the Boardwalk Trail is an interesting timeline of how and when the pollution occurred over time. The timeline only goes up to 2011; but in talking with staff member Jennifer she told me that the good news about the cleanup of the lake has continued positively since the 2011 time frame. Near the end of the trail we found three small alligators, whose mother was very likely nearby. The physical boardwalk is safely about the level of the water so there is no worry.

On the way back from the edge of the lake several of us took the Green trail which very interestingly abuts the property where injured / retired animals live. There is no other place to see these animals than from the Oakland Nature Preserve Green Trail.

Jenifer mentioned that all but 6 miles of the 40 mile long round the lake trail are completed. I do not know if this is a hiking or a biking trail or both.

There is NO fee to hike in the preserve. And there is amply parking.
