If you plan your day based on the tides, you will not be disappointed. We took a pontoon boat out, anchored and spent hours as the tide came in, and the island went under! Take time for walking the area. The whole visit was super. Enjoy!

We have been coming here by boat for many years. The island is just west of Ponce Inlet - a local knowledge access point to the Atlantic Ocean. The daily tidal change is what makes this island shrink and grow. Be sure to keep the outgoing tide in mind when deciding where to land your vessel. I have seen a few unhappy boaters stranded high and dry- awaiting the next high tide or an expensive commercial tow. We always anchor our 17-foot vessel in shallow water and wade ashore.
This lovely setting is very popular on summer weekends so come early or mid-week to ensure a "docking" space at the shoreline.
This area is surrounded by great views of the ocean, the N. Indian River- Halifax River junction, and Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Navigators must observe the slow speed manatee protection zones. Local knowledge and a depth finder is helpful because the area is off the maintained ICW channel and lacks complete buoy system.
We have seen many boaters with dogs who romp and frolic on the shore and in the shallows. This is fine but can be an issue for nesting birds in the area. So be sure to limit Rover's roaming and romping area to avoid disturbing rare or sensitive shore birds. This is a natural setting and we should all respect the need of wild creatures in their sensitive habitat.
We almost always seen dolphins in the water on our voyage to and from Disappearing Island. We know of no public ferry system to here so private or charter vessel is the way to get to Disappearing Island.

Nothing but mostly well behaved dogs and fun-loving boaters. Great fun in the sun. And a fine ice cream boat to boot. A great place to get stuck on a falling tide. Darn I hate when that happens. "Sorry, honey, we'll just have to hang a few hours longer."

There are better sandbar islands that are not all about loud music, misbehaving adults, trash and crowds of people who don't know how to boat.

This used to be a fun place, but now it is the place to hang around and drink until you are throwing up in the water DRUNK. To add insult to injury, they leave their trash behind. We found other tidal islands in the river to enjoy. If I wanted to be around loud, obnoxious drunks, I would go to a bar.

This is a sandbar at the mouth of the inter-coastal. As you look across the water out to the ocean the lighthouse is on the north side and the Coast Guard Station is on the south side. It is a barren pile of sand that somehow attracts small watercraft to the shores at each tide. Grab a cooler and a chair and be a minimalist for the stay.

Every time I go to visit this island it isn't there!!! One minute it is there and suddenly "poof!" it's gone! I have spoken to people who claim to have visited this island, and would mention them here but . .. . . . . THEY'RE GONE TOO! If you can ever get there don't expect 'Welcome Centers'. 'Shopping Malls', Restaurants or Sports Bars. In fact, don't expect much of anything! "Disappearing Island". However did they come up with this name!?!

We went on a family trip to Disappearing Island and were not disappointed. The lighthouse in the background was beautiful. This is a great place to relax and enjoy with the family. Loved our time away...

This was a great stop during our day out on the boat! My son and I were visiting New Smyrna for our second time, but we were lucky to be with locals who know the great places to be! Our friends have gone there for years, and I guess know how to avoid some of the issues I've read in other reviews. We were on the Lighthouse side of the island, maybe the less visited side. It was a fun afternoon and nice little hang-out off the boat.

Can you get to it without going by boat and if so where’s the best place to walk from?
Written October 10, 2018
Only if you can walk on water. If you can, then I have some questions for you!!!😉😜
Written October 11, 2018
Yes, we did it today. Put in at the lighthouse boat ramp.

Can you hire a boat to take you there?
Written April 11, 2017
There is no offcial boat like a ferry that goes there but surely if you ask around town at the riverside docks as well as random people you'll eventually find someone that whould take you for the right price of course. people usually take there own boats.

It depends on the length of the tide. It is getting smaller every year because of the silting in process in the river. As an average guess I would say it is about a 1\2 acre area.
Written July 11, 2016
You can only see it at low tide we went by boat it was by a light house. Not sure if there is somewhere you can drive to to see it. Wish I could be more helpful
