If you stay at the idyllic River House GH in Yeghegis, there is a direct trail to the ridge and to this fantastic church with excellent carvings, spectacular location and complete quiet. Then you can continue to the fortress (less attractive) where a track descends back directly to Yeghegis. Count 4 or 5 hours in total.

Beautifully located monastery with stunning views. It's a nice hike with over 500 m ascent from the "main" road. You can also get directly with a 4x4 car. Be sure not to miss ruins located about 150 m from two main churches.

Beautiful spot that we got to on our hiking tour, a monastic complex located along the mountain foothills overlooking the Yeghegis River, between the villages of Yeghegis and Horbategh in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. The monastery is located an hours walk from the fortress of Smbataberd. Great hiking area with fields full of wild flowers and buzzing bees!

A bit of a climb up some less than stellar paths to get up to Tsakhats Kar Monastery and some of its ruins as well. Some parts are in decent condition and you can take a while to walk around it all. Another very serene place in Armenia, the only sounds are the birds, the breeze and your breathing. I wouldn’t say this is a must-see place but if you get the chance it is fantastic for the peace and quiet it provides.

The ruins of the old church are even more fascinating than the intact parts. You need to go about 200m further along the track to see them

We hiked up here after a climb to the neighbouring fortress. Lovely church with stunning stonemasons work and great atmosphere. Very enigmatic grave stones too. I loved the depiction of a lion fighting a bull on the rear wall of the church. Lovely spot for a picnic too with table in the shade and drinkable water.

You can get a good view looking down on this from the trail to Smbataberd Fort from The River House. Or add an extra hour and hike down to the valley.
