Historians always wondered how there were no historical Jewish roots in Armenia when all neighboring countries did. In 1996 an Armenian bishop wandered upon remnants of Jewish tombstones and with the assistance of many including experts from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the excavation began. The work was completed in 2009 and opened for viewing.
We were informed of this place by our tour guide when planning our trip to Armenia. We found several articles on the discovery but still were not prepared for the emotional response when we arrived after the nearly 3 hour drive from Yerevan. A small brick wall outlines the area that is guarded by a local villager.
It was our heartbreaking privilege to recite Hebrew prayers for these people who have no decedents to do so for them. It will remain as one of the most memorable and poignant experiences of all of our many world wide travels..

This somehow hidden cemetery is one of the most uniques place you can visit in Armenia or all over the world. If you happen to be around, go and visit. The history of the cemetery is explained on different signs. Much of its history is not known until today, which makes it an outstanding experience and you start to create your own stories to it. The setting is marvellous, a natural beauty.

We combined this visit with some other fascinating attractions in the area, but it certainly merits a visit on its own. The location is beautiful, the village next to it is interesting and the mystic history of this unknown Jewish community is captivating. Cross the small bridge and for a bit. You will know you are there once you see the blue door with the David Shield on it. Detailed explanations in 6 languages!!

It's an ancient and small jewish cemetery in a small area under a huge mountain. A place of absolute peace and meditation. The inscriptions contain old Jewish funerary language and biblical verses.

To find such an old Jewish cemetery in Armenia is something unique and moving. It is considered among the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the world. It was excavated only recently in 2000, by archeologist from Israel. If you read Hebrew you can find Hebrew words on some of the graves..

Here you will find about 40 tombstones dating from 1266 to 1337. The cemetery was used for about 80 years, but then the Jewish community disappeared, leaving only this cemetery as evidence they once occupied this village. The cemetery was studied academically only in the 2000s and was opened to the public in 2009. This is undoubtedly one of the most unique sites in Armenia.

Very special place in whole Armenia. Old Jewish cemetery with about 40 tombstones from 13th century - 10 with Hebrew and Aramaic still readable writing! Specially touching is a writing on a gravestone of young boy Tzwi, died on 26/3/1295! Cemetery was used for only 80 years, and whole comunity, which probably came from Persia, dissapeared. It's very easy to find it, about 300 meters walk down from the main road of the village, down to the river, across the bridge you can soon see blue David star door to the cemetery. Special place for all, not only Jewish tourists coming to Armenia. Recommended!

Across a quiet river, surrounded by peaceful parkland is this little jewel, complemented by a number of explanatory boards. Amidst the mountains of Armenia, this is an intriguing spot to visit, to have a picnic and to hike to!

The cemetery is 800 years old and has been opened for 80 years. The Jewish community disappeared then.
Several tombal stones have been well preserved, interestingly sculpted.
