If you have a Saturday morning with free time and you like architecture and history about aviation, come here! Buzz and George lead the tour through the Curtiss Mansion. They are knowledgeable about Mr. Curtiss ( a major pioneer in aviation), his home and the area around Miami which Mr. Curtiss greatly influenced. I very much enjoyed our tour.

This home located on the edge of the beautiful Miami Springs Country Club golf course was the one time home of aviator Glenn Hammond Curtiss. Never heard of him? Well "google" his name and you'll be surprised at how instrumental this man was to modern day aviation. Not only was he an aviation pioneer and inventor but also the developer who was responsible for the Greater Miami communities of Miami Springs, Hialeah and Opa-Locka.
The home which has been beautifully restored to its' original 1920s glory can be best described as being built in the Pueblo/Mission Revival style of architecture reminiscent of the American Southwest. This style was a favorite of Mr.Curtiss and can be seen in a few other homes and buildings in the Miami Springs area. Tours of the home are currently conducted on Saturday mornings at 10am for a fee. My recent experience while touring the mansion was quite interesting and made all the more enjoyable by tour guides Buzz Fleischman and Cathy Doyle. Their enthusiasm and dedication in explaining the home's history and Mr. Curtiss's life and times was quite infectious and kept us entertained during the approximately 1 hour tour.
I would definitely recommend attending one of their Saturday tours for anyone interested not only in local Miami history and beautiful architecture but also interested Glenn Curtiss's incalculable contribution to aviation.

Well worth the trip to see and hear about the Curtiss Mansion. The docent who spoke to us about the facility was excellent. For the most part except for an upstairs office there was no furniture.

The Glenn H. Curtiss Mansion and Gardens is a historic home designed in a unique Pueblo themed style that likely would seem more fitting if it were located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, rather than Miami Springs, Florida. But here it is, the 21-acre complex built in 1925 by the acknowledged "Father of Naval Aviation" and the "Founder of the U.S. aircraft industry." An aviation pioneer, by the start of World War I, Curtis was America's largest aircraft manufacturer. In retirement, he also developed the cities of Miami Springs, Hialeah and Opa-locka. Located at 500 Deer Run, at the northern edge of Miami International Airport, this unique home was designed by Martin L. Hampton, one of Miami's most prominent architects during the 1920s. It is V-shaped and constructed of hollow clay tile with a rough textured stucco exterior. The roof is flat with very irregular parapet walls embellished by projecting waterspouts and irregular shaped openings. The main entrance is set within a deeply recessed T-shaped opening and marked by a flat-roofed porte cochere. The nearby man-made lake features a barbecue grill constructed of coral rock. Curtiss lived in the large, two-story residence until his death in 1930. The mansion was the largest of Pueblo themed houses built in the development of Country Club Estates in Miami Springs. In addition to the small lake, the landscaped estate also includes a central patio and a golf course. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
