About
The New World Symphony (NWS), America's Orchestral Academy, opened its newly-designed 'campus' designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, in February 2011 (previously, the NWS was located in the Lincoln Theater on Lincoln Road). NWS's new home is a $160 million building with attached garage located in a 2.5 acre park at the corner of 17th Street and Washington Avenue in Miami Beach.

We went to a Chamber Music concert and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great concert hall acoustics. And the rooftop Garden is not to be missed - great views of the surrounding South Beach area.

Wall-casts are movies played at the NWS seasonally. Pack your picnic basket, don't forget the wine, invite some friends and relax under the Miami Beach sky.

This is an extremely intimate and beautiful concert hall that only sits 757 attendees. Unlike many Frank Gehry buildings, the New World Center is very restrained on the outside. However, once you get into the interior of the concert hall, the standard Gehry swoops and curves are everywhere. Our guidebook described this concert hall as a Frank Gehry building turned inside out, and I would agree with this assessment. In addition to being a small venue that gives every attendee a spectacular view of the performers, the New World Center has excellent acoustics, and spectacular lighting systems and video capabilities. The concert that we attended cost $14 per person, which is probably less per person than ordering a drink on Ocean Drive. This got us third row center seats that put us about twenty feet from the orchestra. I think the lead cello might have had lettuce in her teeth. Okay, not really, but our view was that good. If you’re a classical music lover, or enjoy great architecture, this is a must see for any trip to Miami. Gehry even pays homage to the Art Deco style of South Beach by incorporating portholes and sails into his design of the Center.

My wife & I attend Sunday concerts where fellows (students) perform classical musical pieces including Beethoven, etc. The afternoon tickets are a bargain & can we stroll around Lincoln Ave. before or after concerts. Concerts are about two hours & public parking at reasonable rates available a couple of blocks west of concert hall. They also have an outside garden on 6th floor where you get a nice view of Miami Beach area. In addition they have free concerts at night where you can sit outside & they project concert on outside wall of building.

Excellent tour of the Frank Gehry building. Outside of the building is atypical for Gehry. You need to get the inside tour to see how Gehry spun his design magic.

The good news: New World Symphony Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas persuaded his childhood friend Frank Gehry to design the New World Center for his orchestra to replace an eyesore open parking lot across from the Convention Center. It was completed in 2011.

The bad news: The Miami Beach City Council was thrilled to have a world class architect but didn't actually like his designs. So the whole thing is a Gehry building encased in a box.

So take a tour, one hour, 1pm, certain days (check website). Our tour guide was a volunteer architect. Just fascinating. State of the art hydraulics to reconfigure the concert hall 36 ways. State of the art acoustics by the world's leading firm.

And hear a concert--buy tickets in advance. The intimate hall only seats 750. Amazing musicianship in wonderful acoustics.

If you find yourself visiting Miami during the college-season academic year, seriously consider visiting the New World Symphony for a performance. The school provides fellows with a year of creative instruction and collaboration in an amazingly beautiful Frank Gehry building. Tickets are very reasonable and there's not a bad seat in the house, either visually or acoustically. As well, the roof top is open 30 minutes prior to the performances and the view is incredible. There are many free performances as well.

Sit under the stars, with swaying palm trees and a light tropical breeze while listening to a first class orchestra playing wonderful classical music and all this is free. New World Symphony, a training fellowship for extremely talented musicians, has created a park outside the symphony hall with fantastic acoustics and up close visuals of the musicians and orchestra. Bring a picnic, wine and friends, but get there well before performance time to insure you get a space on the lawn. If you enjoy classical music under the stars, you can't miss this!
