About
PODZEMLJE PECE – TOURIST MINE AND MUSEUM - MEZICA UNDERGROUND ADVENTURES Lead mining under the mountain Peca began already in Roman times, the written records show, that from 1665 until the end of the previous century, when the mine was finally closed down, 1000 km of tunnels were dug under the mountains of Koroska region. Today Tourism Mine and Museum Podzemlje Pece is one of the main attractions Karavanke UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK and the place for unique underground adventures. These remarkable underground passages enable us to get to know the history of mining while seeing the mine from the mining train and on foot, with mountain bikes or by kayak along the underground lakes in the flooded part of the mine.

I went here for the underground kayaking trip at the recommendation of a friend who had done it and loved it! It's truly a unique experience. You don't need to be an experienced kayaker at all to enjoy the experience, though a level of physical fitness is definitely needed to get to the kayaking location and back (lots of stairs and a stretch of walking through moving water while pulling the kayaks.) Our guide did a good job of explaining things. I loved the experience a lot and it was definitely worth coming to this part of Slovenia just for kayaking underground.

We did both the kayak and the "normal" bike tour in the mine. Our two tour guides (both young women) were great. They spoke very understandable English and everything was well organized. I personally found the kayak tour a little more exciting and challenging. However, if you are in ill health (especially from the respiratory tract) or have problems with tight or darkness, this tour is rather unsuitable for you. Otherwise an absolutely recommendable experience.

we spent a morning discovering the tunnels of the Mezica mines. One floor is reserved for the bikers - and it was a great experience.
We came there be Nomadbike, Koros, a bikers place not far away.
The historical part was the best. It was insightful to learn about the Austrian influence, the Yugoslawian period and the good and bad changes since the fall of the iron curtain and the independence of Slowenia.
If you ar not into sports, a train will bring you into the mine, on another floor.
If you are water oriented, canoening is offered on the lowest level.

Went with the kids (aged 10 and 12) foe a fab experience: guided underground tour by bike, some 2 hrs od cycling and some walking at mid-point stops. Surreal experience but hugely entertaining for the kids.

Absolutely fantastic visit doing the underground kayaking. Lara was a brilliant guide and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I loved that it wasn't just kayaking, we got to walk around the mines and experience the train into and out of the mines, as well as getting lunch down there. I've been to a few other mines before (including the much more famous mercury mine in Idrija) and this is the best by absolutely miles.

The kayaking tour in the mines was probably the highlight of my trip to Slovenia. It was very well organized and great fun. First going down the mines with the small train in the dark. Then preparing for the kayaking (good equipment). The kayaking was really great. We were allowed to explore the mines all by ourselves for an hour. No need to be afraid to get lost, its not that big. After that the tour continued with walking through the old mines with interesting information. And ending with a miners lunch. We were the only english-speaking people in the tour, all the others were Slovenian, but that was not a problem at all. The tourguide always made sure to inform us as well. All in all, definetly recommendable and worthwhile taking a detour to Mezica!

We wisited this location as part of a work trip, and the experience is incredible.
Up top you suit up with protective clothing and helmet, you get your lamp and off you go to the small train, which in the older days used to take the men to and from the mine.
The drive is interestig - enclosed in a small, unsprung cart, 7 people with you, you feel every bump and turn in the track. It feels like you are doing 50 - while in reality you are doing 8 - snaking deep into the Peca mountain.
The tour is easy for most people, and you get a feeling of resepct for the people who worked these shafts (1000km all combined!!!). An ex miner explains the procedures, the history of the mine and the reasons for its closure. And you are avestruck with the amount of manual labour that was put into this place.
All in all an incredifle experience, and a must see if you are in this region.
Groups are invited to book in advance, others have to be there by 11- you join any people also waiting there..

Two-hour visit, starting and returning with a mine train. Great guiding representing the life of miners. You can also bike through the tunnels or discover underground by kayak. Great experience!

Everything is great about the Podzemlje Pece mines. For starters the staff is extremely nice. We walked in on a Tuesday morning, not knowing what to expect from these mines or tours. Unfortunately, the bike tour was not until that afternoon. At 11am there was a guided tour but this was prebooked by a large group. After a nice chat with the lady behind the bar, we decided to just have some tea and visit the museum. Then a very nice lady came to us to explain something about the possibilities to see the mines and we could easily tell that she was very passionate about the mines. She recommended to join the large group, even though they were all school kids. And so we waited for two hours which was absolutely no problem since the sun was shining and people from the museum were so kind to us.
When the bunch of kids arrived, several members of the staff still had eyes for us and so they told us what to wear and to do. Fully equipped, we climbed into one of the many tiny waggons and that is where our adventure really began. Complete darkness for about 15 minutes, feeling like this train is running 120 km/h into the cave system. But nothing whatsoever... 12 km/h max!
The tour was exiting and there is a lot to see underground. We enjoyed it big time. We were very happy with this opportunity of course, though we recommend to make a seperate reservation in order to go with a guide that speaks English or German. Since the school kids were from Slovenia, we had to just look around and listen to the short explanation from the staff, whenever they had the time to do so (of course, the kids were their main concern).
Bottemline is to say that a visit is really worthwile and for € 9 pp extremely I think it's extremely cheap. Go ahead and have fun!

Hi all,
Are any of you able to recommend a way of getting to the mine from Bled? We won't have a car to drive ourselves.
Thanks in advance!
