Very pleasant visit with the guide Jonathan. He really knows the history of this park and a magnificent historical walk. No complaints. Particularly well maintained place. Quite chaotic access path and be careful if you park your car under the shelter of the trees, some fruits may fall. Price of 5 USD for foreigners and 1 USD for locals. Bring water in case of strong heat. Thanks again to Jonathan and a cordial hello from Belgium!

Not sure why this site was barely on the map and we were for a few hours the only visitors - it should be on the map for everyone and bring some jobs to the locals to train up as guides. our tour company Epic Tours set us up with the Parks Manager, which was specially arranged through the tourism department, and not a normal occurance. He was so knowledgable and made the entire site come alive with stories and his explanations. It was a very large site and walking it gave the real feeling of what an ancient city would have been like. The small museum offered great before and after photos. It's just odd not more has been made of this great site. We were not able to do Joya de Ceren that day as it was closed perhaps this was what happened to people - they opted for that and Coatapeque instead. I would absolutely add time into a schedule and make sure to find a good guide to explain the site. We tried to tip the Manager and he became quite offended saying it was his job and he loved his work, quite an unexpected reaction but he was proud and such a lovely man - he did allow us to buy him a coke by way of thanks!

I was staying in Suchitoto and wanted to spend the13th Baktun in a Mayan site. Cihuatan was the closest one so I took the local bus (U$0.75) to Aguilares (1 hour) and from the bus depot walked the 4 kms. to the site. From the highway, one has to walk another km. up a dirt path to get to the site. Admission is normally U$3 for foreigners but as I was Canadian, the ticket seller said that the fee was "complimentary". There is a small museum on the site with both Spanish and English signs. The nearby toilets are very clean. Go to the refreshment/souvenir stand and ask for a pamphlet for a walking tour of the site. They had run out of the English version so I was loaned one for my visit. The entire tour took about one hour. There was no one on the site except for myself and it was only when I was about to leave that I encountered a few other visitors. The guard told me that once I get back to the highway, a tuk-tuk back to Aguilares should cost U$0.25!!! Unfortunately I was not able to flag one down and walked the 4 kms. back. Bus back to Suchitoto again took over 1 hour. The site cannot be compared to the magnificence of Copan or Tikal, but I was glad I went there. Souvenir t-shirts (choice of 4 different designs) sell for a very reasonable price of U$5.

Luckily we visited this conservation project with a guide. Finding this place is difficult and then you drive down a long skinny dirt road to find the ruins.
The cost is $3 but often free when gate attendant off duty
We walked the nature path and saw many birds and goats. The ruins include a ball court and Mayan pyramid.
There is also a small museum and bathrooms
Worth seeing!

This is the largest archaeological site El Salvador. The actual site is much larger with only 25% uncovered. This site is well maintained and all signage is in English and Spanish. The information room is very informative and what has been restored in the park is very good. The site is very secure and for the next year is free to everyone. I wish that some of the artifacts that were uncovered here were on site. The restoration is still on going. Well worth the trip.

Founded around 900 AD after the collapse of the Mayan empire, the site was burned. It remained buried until it was found in 1925. It is a large site with ball ground as well as a ceremonial site. Not as well known but worth the visit
