I use to go down a lot more. When I did go down, there were plenty of interesting little shops. Met some nice people. They were suppose to restore the big tall green building and have shops in the bottom of it. Cliffs Hardware and Drapers furniture are some neat places to visit. I think there are a couple of... Just off the main srtreet are a coouple of side streets clearly labeled as an Historic District. It has the feel of old time Florida. The Grand Hotel is closed but hopefully someone will revitalize it and give it new life.

For a historic town it's inner city is ok, nothing really to pull you into town, the other half of the city is run down, old homes and not recommended for nightlife

OK so this is a real bit of proper America, and at least it's being honest about itself and not trying to be something else.

Downtown Lake Wales is again thriving, and will be more so when the GRANDE HOTEL re-opens! Shops, dining, murals and great great architecture await visitors. For shops and dining, it is best to come during the week, or on the first Saturday of the month.

This area is full of surprises. The food is excellent and there are several restaurants. You can dine in or outside in comfort. There are wonderful little shops, the Kitchen Shop is an exciting experience, there are thrift stores as well as fine furniature stores with all sorts of great Floridan finds.

When we visited it was very quiet and most shops were closed. Just one average coffee shop open. The historical centre is basically a small group of 1920's buildings which have been renovated.

We visited many times during our 3 month stay. Love all the thrift shops. The annual Mardi Gras parade is one of the best i have seen (even though it rained this year). The city is working hard to fill vacant store fronts and spruce itself up. The library is first rate.
