About
The bridge re-opened after restoration on 1-12-2022. You can walk, bike or rollerblade the approximately 2.2 miles to Pigeon Key on the bridge and enjoy the amazing views. In the Florida Keys, there is no name better known than Henry Flagler who built the world-famous Oversea Railway in the early 1900's. Called the "8th Wonder of the World", this amazing ribbon of steel and concrete forever changed the history of the Florida Keys.

We rented bikes from our hotel and biked over the bridge. It was such a cool experience! We saw a sea turtle, several sting rays (one was over 5 feet), and lots of sea birds. We biked all the way to the end at Pigeon Key, didn’t tour it because for us it wasn’t worth the $15 per person even for our kids to walk around it. But just biking the bridge was worth it!

Last time we were visiting the bridge was under construction and happy to finally walk the old timer. My great grandparents helped establish Marathon and if this bridge could talk? How many times my great grandparents, grandparents and parents traveled over this bridge was emotional as going back in time. Now, I know why it frightened me as a child going over it to visit them as so narrow and no filter from you and the water. Fantastic historic bridge to exercise and view the area from. We did walk to Pigeon Key and had wished the Conch Train showed up to take us back. Two miles to Pigeon Key so do not be discouraged as not 7 miles. LOL
The day was cloudy and perfect to walk as not too hot as the black asphalt would have radiated heat. The history of the bridge and preservation was much appreciated as in the day it was iconic. Not many people would know it was at one time one of the 8 wonders of the world. Engineering is something to appreciate and marvel.
Definitely recommend stopping and getting some photos or walking it as far as you can go. There is a Conch Train for folks not wanting to walk by foot.

Great place to go on a bike ride or a walk and watch the sunset. The view is amazing. Thw old seven mile bridge is broken off at 2 miles down, so to walk to the end and back it is 4 miles. There is limited parking so you may have to wait to find a spot. If you can't find a spot you can park across the road near the sunset grill and walk across the street.

My husband and I brought our bikes with us for this experience.. We got up early one morning and was out there by 7:30am to avoid the heat as much as possible. It was the perfect morning, showers in the distance that helped cool the ocean breeze and the cloud coverage was perfect to add to this enjoyable experience. We didn’t do Pigeon Key cause it wasn’t open yet but had a great time and would recommend to others :)

If you drive down the keys, stop and walk part of the old seven mile bridge! Two miles one way. Beautiful views. Walking or biking allowed. Parking on southbound side is limited, only drawback so get there early. Or we stopped going northbound and parked near sunset grill on side of road, just watch for all no parking signs!

We were able to learn about the history and view up close during our visit to Pigeon Key. Some of the old bridge has been restored so you can walk or bike it out to Pigeon Key. The gap where the swivel was taken out makes for great pictures.

We loved our journey up the Florida Keys. Driving the Old Seven Mile Bridge was part of the journey coming from Key West and working your way up to Key Largo. Take the trip, it's well worth it. The views are unbelievable, and the water is so blue and clear.

We headed to this bridge to catch the morning sunrise. Ample parking when we arrived and it was still dark. Great views from on the bridge as you walk the 2 miles to Pigeon Cay. Note that Pigeon Cay is only open at certain hours and certainly not at sunrise - therefore no bathrooms. There are lots of other walkers, bikers, and joggers so you feel safe, even in the dark before the sun rises.

This was a fabulous walk 2-mile walk of the old bridge from Marathon Key to Pigeon Key and 2 miles back. Lovely views. The parking lot is very small so best to go when it's not crowded to get a parking spot. You can take bikes. We got lucky with parking because the walking bridge had just opened the day before. Highly recommend!

Staying in Marathon, this is a super walk or bike1 We rode bikes, a little over two miles each way flat, well marked, new pavement. Free. It ends at Pigeon Key, which has a nominal fee to visit which we did and enjoyed. .
Great views across nothing but ocean. Do it!

I was glad to see a recent review. Thank you! Where is access and parking available to walk the bridge

From Marathon traveling south just before the bridge there is a cut off on your right. Last year that cut off was closed so I do not know if it has been reopened.

Is the bridge open for visitors during Memorial Day weekend? What is the best way to get in and make the most of it?
Written May 27, 2017
No unfortunately it is still closed for construction and will be for many months yet. Now you can cross the seven mile and walk out on the old seven mile from that end. This is not as long of a walk and you can't reach Pigeon Key that way. However you can still see an amazing view, gorgeous sunsets and a lot of wildlife.

The bridge is supposed to open at the end of May 2017 for a short time and then the final repairs (which are estimated to take 1400 days) will begin in November 2017.

Im coming in December this year for Christmas is this a good time for spotting Dolphins. What is best time to come and view the sea life early in morn or late in evening etc I'm happy to fish for a bit with my family too. I read good tips go to toilet before you go and choose calm day etc
Thanks we are from Ireland and have never been to the keys

I would suggest that you check out the local party boats in the Keys - for fishing and they have bathrooms! Stop at the Chambers of Commerce for suggestions. There is one in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West. As for dolphins, that is a little more unpredictable. Usually seen on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Keys and away from land - not inshore. If you are heading to the west coast of Florida (Naples or Ft. Myers, you can see them off of the beach there.

I have been to key west a dozen times & always have wanted to stop and check the 'old bridge' out.. do you just pull over and walk there? is there a specific place to park and pay and walk the old bridge? how does it work? either is fine, I just am curious how exactly to get to it from the 'new' bridge.
Written May 24, 2016
There is a parking lot on the north side of the Old Bridge, parking is free.
