My name is Kevin Johnsen owner/operator of FKRA. I am a 40 plus year Middle Keys resident. I have a great understanding of the desires and needs of my customers. My business caters to nearly everybody by building custom trips for all interests and skill levels. My goal is to provide a rewarding and successful day on the water and to create memories within a safe and comfortable environment. I offer high quality trips from my custom 32' center console boat. My boat is a stable platform that outperforms most boats in its class, providing a quiet superior ride and amenities. I specialize in reef fishing, family fishing, offshore and shark fishing trips. Additionally I offer lobstering, snorkeling, sand bar and mermaid trips.

Kevin will put you on fish. He runs a clean tight boat and if you listen to him you will get a lot of fish in the boat. He is a reall professional guide and works for you to get on the bite. He will take you all over and all of his spots had fish in them. I like fishing with Kevin because you actually fish not just drive around and pick up stray fish. It was a great trip and I can’t wait to go see Kevin again next year. If you are going to Marathon book a half day or a full day you will not be disappointed. When you go with Kevin you don’t go fishing you go catching.

Capt Kevin gave us a great day on the water for our group of five. Capt Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about fishing the Keys. Come open and willing to listen to his instructions and not only will you catch a lot of fish, you will learn how to fish and have a great time!
We were reeling in the yellowtail snapper immediately upon set up and also snagged a massive king mackerel.
Pulled in yellow tail snapper, mackerels, groupers and even a few sharks.
Such a great day fishing with Capt Kevin and what a start to 2025! We will definitely book another trip with Capt Kevin and will be recommending him to any of our guests!

Captain Kevin Johnsen was so friendly, patient and accommodating! The water wasn’t PERFECT for snorkeling, and I wasn’t comfortable hopping into the high swells. So after my husband tired of swimming with the fishes and turtles without me, we pivoted and did other fun things instead. Beautiful, fun, and interesting boat ride, fishing and sightseeing. The Captain was clearly very experienced and knowledgeable— and he explained the fishing to me (a total neophyte) in a way that was easy for me to understand. It was a perfect day on the water! Can’t wait to do it again!

Second trip with Capt Kevin and Florida Keys Reel Adventures. Although it was a little rough, Kevin found the fish for us! Amazing day out on the water. I have never been on a fishing boat that is kept in pristine condition. Not only is he a Captain, he is a teacher. Took the time to teach us about each different kind of fish we caught, including 2 black tip sharks. Once back to the marina, he got me to feed a shark with my bare hands, something I would of thought I would never do in my lifetime. But with his help, I DID IT! Can't wait to return again next year!!!! There should be a 10 star rating on here for him!

On our vacation to New Smyrna Beach we took a side trip to go fishing in the Keys. We "hooked" up with Florida Keys Reel Adventures. Capt. Kevin Johnsen runs a pristine boat out of Marathon's Capt.Hook's Marina. We booked an all day trip. We left the dock in the morning and being our first trip ever to the Keys didnt know what to expect. All we can say is WOW! What a day out on the water. Cap't Kevin was very patient with us being our first time. ( and funny!) He told us the story of "Fred the Tree" and other stories you will not see or hear anywhere else. He taught us so much about fishing, how to catch them, how fast the fish" catch" on to what we were doing and how to outsmart them. We caught so many fish! My favorite was the Yellow Jack I caught... what a fighter! He took us to Castaway's for a delicious lunch and a land break where we saw the manatees at the dock. Finished up the day catching our limit and headed back to the dock. He taught our son how to clean the fish, and let him help him. I can not say enough about our day. So I attached some pictures for you to see for yourself.

I have fished with Kevin for quite a few years with my daughters. He knows his stuff! Kevin is great with kids he is a great teacher, who can really adapt on the fly. I honestly have met no one else who will work as hard, knows the fishing and will be upfront with you about the possibilities that day. Remember...you are the crew...if you want to FISH, not just reel...but FISH this is your guy!!

We’ve visited the keys 3 times and each time we’ve booked a fishing trip with Captain Kevin at Florida Keys Reel Adventures. He customizes the trip according to your goals and ensures those goals are met! He’s very knowledgeable about the area and invests in teaching you the proper technique to be successful. We’ve had a hugely successful fishing trip each time. He quickly and thoroughly cleaned all of our fish and a local restaurant prepared it for us. It’s a highlight of our trips to the keys and we would highly recommend booking a trip with Captain Kevin!

If your looking to have a great catch in the keys, Reel Adventures is the spot. My husband and I, booked our first private fishing trip with Kevin. We had no idea what we were doing. Kevin explained how to hold the pole, how to feel the catch grab of the line and how quick to start reeling your catch in. Not only was he knowledgeable, but helpful when we brought the catch in. After, our amazing catch he told us where to go to get it cooked at the local restaurants! It was soooo good.
I highly recommend Kevin, with Florida Keys Reel Adventures, you won’t be disappointed!

Fishing (obviously), but also shallow water exploring around tiny islands, deeper water reef snorkeling, history seeking, and eating with the locals at a waterfront restaurant. Captain Kevin will customize an experience for you. Let him know, your ideas. Easy to get to his boat (meeting location). Caught plenty of fish quickly then headed towards calmer waters. Kevin cleaned the fish and our Key West restaurant prepared it for our dinner.

My son (17) and I have fished on a few boats over the years in Florida and Mexico and this was our favorite fishing trip for many reasons. Captain Kevin asks you ahead of time about your experience level, your hopes for the trip, and what you would like to catch while out with him. Based on this information he can try to game plan with whats recently been biting and get the best results possible for your day on the water. Also it was super cool to actual help "be the crew" and place lines and actually catch the fish vs. being handed a rod after someone else sets the hook. My son caught his biggest mahi to date and we limited out on blackfin tuna in a short, intense amount of time. Next up we deep dropped for tile fish and caught a few nice ones which are delicious by the way!! Overall, we plan on fishing with him again on future trips and can't wait to be part of the crew on a new experience chasing something different.

Do you take people out lobstering? If so how much and anything next week open?

I do offer lobster charters. It is seasonal. Lobster season is currently open, but there are no lobster to catch this time of year. Lobster trips are from Late July through maybe Halloween. I want you to catch lobster and have fun in reasonable conditions. ALL of my information is on my website.

Does this captain have an attitude? I read many of the reviews and every review that is rated as less than 5 stars gets a nasty response from the Captain. Even 4 star reviewers get blamed. Every trip cannot be perfect but before I book anything I want to know what is factual, the two star or the 5 star reviews, that appear to also be facebook friends of the captain.

Hi Mark, I'm the captain. The answer you're fishing for is Yes to some degree. I have an attitude of caring and I take full responsibility for my words and actions. What you see in my review replies is me caring. I have good communication with my customers and provide as much information as I can to ensure my customers can make an educated decision for the best activity for their group. A boat in the ocean is not for everybody. I'm on a boat with strangers under unfamiliar conditions to most of my customers. I have to take exceptional care of my guests because of this reason alone. I have a very short period of time to make my trips successful under any type of condition for a wide variety of activities for every kind of person. Sometimes I get a group not suited to the activity. I understand that. It's my job to make a fun successful trip. I do that well. Not 2 star quality or a 2 star effort. Sometimes some trips don't go well and I make up for it in one way or another. The day I mess up my trip and earn a bad review on here, I will own it. I just won't tolerate a customer that I go the extra mile for, that does not communicate any issue with my fishing style or behavior on my trip go online to hurt me after having a successful fishing trip despite anything. They got a nice price break because they didn't complain on the trip because I felt empathy for them, not for what I did wrong. I work with all of my customers to make sure they walk away happy because this is my business. I know how damaging an online review can be and I take this seriously. It's incredibly frustrating helping people and having them turn around and hurt you. I'm running 200-250 trips a year Mark. Low ball 800 people annually on my medium size boat multiplied by 5 years in business. 1 bad review out of all of those people hurts me significantly on TripAdvisor. That's my horrible reality. That's not attitude. I fight for everything I have earned. And about the Facebook observation, many of my customers "friend" me on Facebook after they go on a trip with me. I also take and post their pictures so it helps in sharing, especially when they send me pics of what they are catching wherever they live. I become friends with my customers from bonds created on 1 trip. I hope this gives you some helpful perspective.

Party of 2 would like to go out fishing next week. Do you provide "group" fishing trips. I understand private charters are quite expensive, therefore looking for a small group to go with.

You are more than welcome to invite whomever you wish along, but my trips are private to avoid any possibility of conflicts among my groups. I have all the challenges I can handle day to day making everything work as it does. Expecting 2 groups of people on vacation to show up at the dock on time, prepared, and have the skill level and interests shared is nearly impossible. My trips/rates offer the most bang for the buck and that is the best I can do for my customers. I hope you understand.
