We were visiting Marathon and took the advice of others on TripAdvisor and we're so glad we did. It was absolutely beautiful. There's a lovely, expansive beach area. There are also bathroom facilities and outside showers. It's also a wonderful place to catch the sunset - even if it's blocked by dark clouds!

We used to take the kids most days for a snorkel at sombrero when we'd been out fishing on the reef. Every day it would be different. Loads of mooring spots on teh reef that make it different each time you go and different fish to see (albeit Yellow tails, chub and cudas are always the first in to see... More

We had a rented boat and spent half a day snorkeling. There are many mooring balls to anchor to somthe reef is not damaged. The water is very clear and there are a large number of fish and coral to see.

Absolutely stunning is all I can say. A definite must see if you're in the Marathon Key area. The colorful fish and corals were stunning!

We have been snorkeling in many famous places around the world (e.g. the Red Sea, Roatan, Hawaii etc.), but we saw things here that we've never seen anywhere else. The reef surrounds an old lighthouse that was built in 1858 on a tiny island. The island has since washed away, but the living coral reef is still there, and it's... More

Sombrero offers something that is a rare thing in the coral-based keys - a large sand beach. This city facility is free and has facilities, bathrooms, water fountains, a playground... and a reef within swimming /kayak distance. Bring your own food, though - no snack bar or restaurant nearby. Good access and free parking. Likely the best beach in Marathon.

If you have your own boat or rental, they have bie-up bouys already out there, a bunch of dive companies run trips out there. Beautiful diving!

When the seas are calm and the weather is warm, Sombrero reef is a fun place to enjoy the clear waters and marine wildlife of the middle Keys. I suggest getting there early on holidays and weekends, because there are a limited number of anchoring bouys available, and you cannot drop anchor within the boundaries of the marine preserve. Jump... More

Obviously a boa accessible region, we were within 1/2 mile when I caught my 15 pound tuna. Cool tower although I am not sure what its original purpose was other than a light beacon for ships.
