Beautiful beach. No expense spared to recover from last hurricane- it is pristine. Plenty of parking. Nice restrooms. Outdoor showers. Some shaded cover. Nice place to spend a beautiful day. Can get crowded.

I’m not sure if it’s normal, but the water was so rough! We visited in January, so maybe that’s why? It was beautiful, but snorkeling was super challenging. I only lasted a few minutes

What an exciting experience! I felt like I was in an aquarium! So many fish! Visibility was perfect! Little bit of rolling on the boat. Saw a variety of fish. Even a huge barracuda. Definitely recommend!

Great day at the reef snorkeling. Lots of colorful fish, barracuda, and amazing crystal clear water the day we went.

rented a boat and snorkeled-fun time-aqua water, warm-saw plenty of fish-they swam all around us-easy to anchor to the many floating buoys

If you have never been to Sombrero or have never seen a reef, you’ll enjoy it. But I was here 15 years ago and the difference breaks my heart. 80% of the coral is gone; many dead brain coral heads. This place used to be eaten up in huge brain coral - I only found a single specimen the size of my fist. There are some fish still but not as many - there were especially fewer parrot fish. There are sea fans and some yellowish-brown corals left. Water visibility was poor (30 - 40 feet) and milky - this could be due to tides or weather so that may vary.

There are yellow tags on some corals placed by researchers trying to gauge the growth of coral. I was told by a Captain Pip’s employee that Marathon is very proud of its reefs and that Sombrero is “still 85% alive.” Compared to when?? Last year??

Hope the folks taking tourists have a job backup plan because this reef will be gone within 10 years. Go if you’ve never been; avoid if you, like me, want to revisit for nostalgia because it will just make you sad.

Unfortunately this reef looks like a coral graveyard right now, in 2021. Lots of dead staghorn coral and empty rocks. Some fish is still present. Very sad view for a sea lover. 🥲
