About
The island of Pigeon Key is a historic 5-acre island located in the heart of the Florida Keys! It was once the home of over 400 workers who built the Overseas Railway from Miami to Key West. Today, the island is operated by the Pigeon Key Foundation, a 501(c)-3 not for profit organization. Our Visitor's Center, which is the address listed, is where our ferries depart from at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. Visitors can take part in our guided historical tour, pack a picnic, enjoy our beach front, snorkel or fish (must bring your own gear) or explore on their own. The possibilities are endless and the visit is perfect for people of all ages. Bring the family or your friends to enjoy paradise! Check out our website or call our Gift Shop for more information about this hidden gem in Marathon. To keep our ferry crew, tour guides, staff and visitors safe, we will be requiring masks for admittance to the island and our tours will be based off of social-distancing suggestions.

Next to the courtyard in Marathon, is a pigeon key visitors Center trailer. We stopped in and purchased our tickets for a boat ride over to the island and a guided tour, $15, $13 for seniors or with a coupon, and included the boat ride as well as the tour. The boats and the ferry will be discontinued in about six weeks as the Pigeon Key Foundation will be using a trolley which will run over the old seven bridge. Our guide for the tour was CT and she was outstanding, so knowledgeable about history of the overseas railroad and, especially, regarding the business tycoon, Henry Flagler who began this tremendous feat. I would highly recommend this experience as there are many variations in that you can listen to the guide for the entire time, which we did because it was so incredibly interesting, or swim, snorkel, picnic, etc. Just be certain to bring your own snacks, drinks, equipment, and/or towels. The trips go three times a day and the return boat ride is about two hours and 15 minutes after the drop off. Really enjoyed this tour and the information on this incredible part of American history.

This is a great tour of the rich history of the railroad that runs to Marathon and Henry Flagler the man who financed and built it. Reservations can be made at the pigeon key foundation site or by calling. The building to get to the pigeon key foundation is located next to Faro Blanco and across from West Marine in a construction trailer on overseas HWY. The boat that takes you to the island is located behind the trailer and Faro Blanco. The boat ride is 15 minutes and the tour is 2 hours which includes some down time to look around. The tour is $15 adults $12 kids and well worth the price. They have three tours daily and also allow snorkeling at the island, call ahead of time . This is a hidden gem in Marathon that shouldn't be missed.

I got a GPS-based app for the Florida Keys and heard about Pigeon Key on the app. I searched for info and discovered there are tours (very reasonably priced) so we made a reservation for the 12 noon tour. When we boarded there was one other couple on the boat- and two more couples joined us at the key. A volunteer gave us an informational presentation and we then went snorkeling under the dock.
The history of the key was really interesting and it’s great to see the site is being well kept.
The snorkeling was decent- it was nice to get a little time to check things out under the water.
The boat was also in good shape and all staff members from the welcome center to the boat crew to the volunteer at the key were friendly and helpful.
I would definitely recommend this tour!

We were here two years ago and it remains perfect. We should have made a reservation for our crew of 9, so we missed out on our first try as the ferry only takes about 14 people. Our family made reservations for the 10 am ferry for a Thursday and we packed snacks and a picnic lunch.
Make sure to bring your snorkel mask as hundreds of lovely fish are in the water under the dock. We could not get the two year old out of the water. The boys brought their fishing poles and the tour guide told them to go to the other side of the island for tarpon and barracuda. There were biologists in the main house doing research and bathrooms are clean and accessible.
The water under the dock is about 4 feet, so we felt safe and secure in the water.
We were offered the tour, but skipped it as we had done it before. We stayed until the 12:20 ferry arrived to take us back. A perfect morning in the keys.
Some construction happening as the road will be ready for folks to walk, bike or trolley to the island. Hopefully the ferry will continue. That was half the fun......

Wonderful historical excursion. Julie our tour guide was fantastic. She carefully gave us the complete history of this historic island. She tok us on a tour to view some of the old buildings and museum depicting life on the island and pictures of the building of the Flagler railroad. WE had an enjoyable trolley ride to the island and back with warm and friendly staff. This island history was preserved by dedicated historical motivated individuals and non-profit organizations who raised the money for this opportunity. Thank you for your efforts.

Pigeon Key is a great stop in Marathon. You can either take a 15 ferry ride over or park your car and walk a couple miles or ride a bike. We purchased tickets to take the ferry over for our visit (purchase online or at the Pigeon Key Visitor Center, located in a trailer with a small gift/book shop on route 1). You can participate in a guided tour of the island, which was very informative, picnic lunch, snorkel off the beach, or walk up onto the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The history of how the original railroad bridge was built by so many men is simply amazing.

If you walk the 7 mile bridge from knights key to pigeon it is 2 miles. They do not tell you that you are not allowed on the property unless you pay $15 each. It is a historical sight (I guess) and they all live there in the homes. There is not too much there. We needed to use the rest room. They charged us $5 each.

On a sultry day, we sat in the shade with a cool ocean breeze, listening to CT tell the history of Pigeon Key and the Overseas Railway. Not only was she very knowledgeable, she is a wonderful story teller and breathed life into the tale of Henry Flagler and his legacy of opening South Florida and the Keys. Her enthusiasm for the history of the project and in particular, Pigeon Key, was obvious.

On the same trip over were several families who obviously had a fun afternoon snorkeling and swimming in the waters around the Key. It made me wish I’d packed along some swimming gear and stayed longer.

We had a great time out to Pigeon Key this morning! It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the short boat ride out to the island.
Our tour guide C T was very nice and very knowledgeable about the history of the area and about Henry Flagler. She gave a talk for about 45 minutes but as she said you didn’t have to stay to listen to her you could wonder around as you liked. There are picnic tables so you can bring a lunch if you like. There were several kids on the next boat that brought snorkel gear and it looked like a great place to snorkel!
There is a small museum that was very informative. It was a most enjoyable morning and we were glad we visited and would highly recommend it!!!

Had a great time at Pigeon Key. Guide CT was very informative and witty. I highly recommend you support this non profit that has done so much to preserve the key and has educational programs. We walked the 2 mile old bridge to get there but there is a ferry for a few more weeks then it will be a tram of some sort we were told.
