About Captain Hook's
Captain Hook’s Marathon has been the place to get everything you need for a day on the ocean. We have achieved the TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence three years in a row now. Our services include diving & snorkeling trips, Thunderbolt wreck and night dives, spearfishing & lobstering, dive instruction & certification, fishing charters, kayak & paddleboard tours, even SUP Yoga. Our store compliments and fully supports those services with a full-service bait & tackle shop and a full-service dive shop. We have extended our business with the addition of Strike Zone Charters in Big Pine Key, now called Capt. Hook's Big Pine Key. This has added multiple dive sites, another wreck called the Adolphus Busch Sr., and another beautiful sanctuary and premier dive and snorkel site...Looe Key Reef. We have also added Dive Key West in Key West, which brings us two wrecks to dive, the Vandenberg, the premier wreck in the Keys and the Cayman Salvager. Great reef dives as well.

Thunderbolt dive cancelled on the way out due to weather, not their fault. The boat (Jolly Rodger) is like a platoon and couldn't make it out that far with 4 foot waves, maybe another boat could have. We did one reef dive since it was Thanksgiving morning and we were already out there, and the captain called the 2nd since the conditions weren't good. We all appreciated that and we're refunded our nitrox and half the trip, A+ on their part. We'll try again with them later. I like Capt Hook's bc they're the only one I know of that will allow double dips of the Thunderbolt wreck, and don't charge extra due to the trip being a wreck trip. Cons: -Nitrox $18/tank is crazy high -Thunderbolt wreck is mandatory guided, with a 12 min. enforced dive profile from the time you enter. I understand it's deep, but we usually are able to do similar wrecks unguided and safely dive longer than that. -Our captain told us masks were enforced for covid, but them didn't bother with it himself. Leading others in our group sitting directly next to us to also not wear theirs the whole trip. This made me very uncomfortable.

Communication and customer service have slipped considerably (Denise), since my dives last year with Captain Hook's. This trip was a major disappointment and not handled well at all: 1. Booked two trips (Looe Key & Marathon) two weeks in advance. 2. When we arrived for our first trip, we were informed at the (Big Pine Key) shop that our morning dive had been rescheduled for the afternoon, due to a private party having booked the AM trip. WE RECEIVED NO ADVANCED COMMUNICATION ABOUT THIS. Major inconvenience and not at all customer friendly. 3. We agreed to the afternoon trip, although rough weather later cancelled it (not the shop's fault). HOWEVER, getting the refund processed for this rescheduled-then-cancelled trip was an ordeal. After spending several days jousting with Denise via email over a refund that had not posted to my credit card and Denise's insistence that it was indeed refunded (she would or could not send me a cancellation receipt to verify), I called the shop to speak with Denise about this (she was out of town). FYI - Our second trip (Marathon) was also cancelled due to weather, and that refund was promptly processed. Why all the hassle with the first refund, then? Thankfully, I was able to talk with Kim (OUTSTANDING service & extremely helpful) about the refund situation after we returned home. She advised me the refund was submitted to my credit card yesterday (contradicting Denise's earlier claims), and emailed me the cancellation verification that I had repeatedly requested (and not received) from Denise earlier. THANK YOU, KIM; YOU ARE A LOVELY AND WONDERFUL PERSON! Soooo, Captain Hook's, I'm a fan of your dive operation but now very jaded over how business in the office is conducted. There are many choices for divers in the keys (including my very active scuba club) and for now, at least, Captain Hook's has sunk to the bottom of my list. :-( DIVERS BEWARE: If you book with Cap'n Hook's, double and triple check your reservations before you arrive. You may or may not have one. Ditto on any refunds.

My wife (new diver) and I (15 year diver) dove with Capt. Hook’s while on our anniversary trip. The boats 1st priority was safety, both diver safety and Covid-19. The dive briefings were in-depth and covered everything. Even though the guide is there to lead, he was very attentive to issues in the water. My wife had brand new gear and the tank kept coming loose in the water, and he assisted me numerous times to get it strapped back on so we could continue our dives (I dive with a camera so i didn’t have two free hands and he was happy to help). Weather was moving in from a tropical storm, so they had to cancel one of Our days of diving, and the refund was issued without having to ask.

My wife and I have been diving all over the world with some of the best and worst dive shops. Captain Hooks ranks way up there with the best. Great captain, crew and dive master focused on safety first and on their customers. Shallow dives with tons to see and warm water in November. Their boat is perfect size and comfortable. A real treat!

WOW! Just WOW! I dive a lot. Of all the dives I'm done no one come close to how tight the crew of Capt. Hooks operates. The crew is the best of the best. Every detail from the moment you step aboard, to the dive and right up to the point you step off the board is executed exceptional well. Safety is thier priority. And having a great is what they work hard to deliver. The dive guides fully prepare you for the dive you're about to experience. Although the boat was made of mostly students the dive guides made sure I had a great time. I'm a master diver and the dive guides regularly checked on me as well as the other divers. Very cool. Safety, safety, safety leads to fun dives. And then throw in you're diving Marathon and you're going to be amazed. Will I dive with them again? Absolutely!
