About
Captain Hook’s Marathon has been the place to get everything you need for a day on the ocean. We have achieved the TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence three years in a row now. Our services include diving & snorkeling trips, Thunderbolt wreck and night dives, spearfishing & lobstering, dive instruction & certification, fishing charters. Our store compliments and fully supports those services with a full-service bait & tackle shop and a full-service dive shop. We have extended our business with the addition of Capt. Hook's Looe Key Reef Adventures in Big Pine Key and Capt. Hook's Dive Key West. This has added multiple dive sites, another wreck called, the Adolphus Busch Sr., and a beautiful sanctuary and premier dive and snorkel site...Looe Key Reef. We have also added Dive Key West in Key West, which brings us two more wrecks to dive, the USNS Vandenberg, the premier wreck in the Florida Keys and the Cayman Salvager. Great new reef and night dives as well.

This was our first trip down to the Keys so finding a trustworthy dive shop was a little stressful. One of us needed a full certification (being their first time diving) while the other needed a refresher course. Our instructor could not have been more polite, cheerful, and helpful. Great attitudes all around and very good about teaching all the needed skills and book smarts for a successful dive.

We were able to do 2 trips while we were there and 1 was with this shop. The boat crew was awesome and made sure everyone had what they needed and knew where we were going. The ride to and from the reef was smooth and even though there were a decent amount of people on board you still had enough space to yourself to move around with your gear. The dive instructor had a huge group that day and did a great job keeping an eye on everyone. It was a little too big for my liking and would be the only downside in my opinion.

If you are a first-time diver or looking to go with a crew that knows what they are doing I'd totally recommend checking out Captain Hook's. Wonderful staff/crew and great experience overall. Keep up the amazing work, we will surely be back!

We had a great time snorkeling despite tricky conditions (1-2ft seas) and I cannot say enough about how well our crew, Captain Micheal and Ryan especially, made sure everyone was as comfortable as possible and safe!

We started out at an outer reef in roughly 1-2 foots seas, and Captain Micheal and crew were watching us like hawks and giving clear and direct instructions without being rude or harsh. After the waves started to build, Captain Micheal looked with his eyes and knew in his heart we were all from the Midwest (ie, not seasoned snorkelers), and picked out a more protected second snorkel location (closer to one foot waves than two).

I do want to say probably five or six people were sea sick and unable to snorkel, and it was not an ideal beginner snorkel experience; that is definitely not Captain Hook's or the crew's fault, rather the weather. These guys did a great job squeezing in a trip between two windy periods, and did the best to get people who wanted to snorkel and dive out to snorkel and dive, which is all you can really ask of any outfitter.

If you want to ensure your snorkel trip is a beginner level, check the weather yourself 2-5 days before the trip! You can use the marine forecast (look for smooth to 2 foot wave forecast) or use windy.com and look for a wind forecast of less than 10 knots.

If you KNOW you get seasick or motion sick, take a dramamine 1 hour before your trip, and bring some ginger flavored candy along. I also bet that most trips do not look like ours did, and plenty of them are a much smoother ride.

At the second snorkel site, Captain Micheal and Ryan continued to carefully watch the group, and responded to an on water incident quickly and professionally without alarming the other people on board. Endlessly impressed with these guys ability to keep their cool.

I would definitely recommend booking with Captain Hooks! Probably your trip will be much calmer than ours, but know that even if it isn't and incidents arise, your are in good hands!

Also the bathrooms are clean!

Our kids, ages 14 and 16, got Scuba certified last month at Captain Hooks. Lynn and Henry were their instructors and they were awesome. My kids felt comfortable with them and we felt comfortable leaving the kids with them each day. Both Lynn and Henry were very knowledgeable and patient and the kids had a wonderful time and are so excited about going scuba diving again. I would highly recommend Captain Hooks.

Wish I had the same experience that some others report on here, but that was not the case for us and they did not earn an opportunity for a reprieve. To be clear, this is for the Marathon location only, IDK about the other two.

Calls to get information about dives was a bit sketch from the start, as I knew more about the requested dives from the online information than the person I was talking to on the phone. The initial dive was cancelled more than 24hrs before it was to depart citing poor visibility, though other dives still operated. Our group alone met the 3 diver minimum requirement for the trip to go, but I suspect low numbers was the real cause for cancelling. My email response to that cancellation alert, asking for their expertise on when conditions might improve or if we may have better luck from other islands, is still unanswered.

I eventually called to reschedule, and the rescheduled dive was silently cancelled which we learned when we showed up early in the day to learn the layout of the operation. We were given a pithy response about how busy they had been so they couldn't do anything to help and offered only a refund (furthering the idea that the conditions was a lie and it was really a lack of divers). I left to retrieve the name of the person I rescheduled with and Denise, who arrived at the counter only for the second conversation, couldn't grasp the concept that I was talking about the rescheduled dive and not the first. There was no effort made by either to make me feel like my business was at all important on that day or that it ever would be.

I understand that conditions can warrant rescheduling, and if there was literally anything else that happened positive I may have believed that excuse and I would actually appreciate it, but there was literally nothing redeeming about my experience from the point of calling to schedule through the final refund to earn a benefit of doubt.

I hope that the professionalism shown on the boat, and with gear, is better than what they show in the other areas of their business. At the end of the day, if something goes wrong on a dive it can represent a life threatening situation. I don't know how many strikes you are willing to allow a business to have and still trust them to that degree, but the Marathon Captain Hook's location is out of our consideration for any future activities. Since we didn't get to the actual dive portion I can't justify giving the Terrible rating to a dive shop, but it is a struggle to keep it at just Poor.

We ended up making the hour drive from our resort to Key Largo, to get to a company that had been very professional when I was doing my research before the trip, and had a wonderful experience that I recommend without hesitation. Leaving at 6am wasn't ideal, but it ended up being worth it. We had gone with Captain Hook's as a matter of convenience for our resort and learned our lesson. I hope I can save others from the same situation.

I really don't like writing bad reviews however I booked with this company over the phone because they said I'd avoid the "service fee." I asked for an email confirmation and never got one. Called back again later on and asked for an email confirmation again and I never received anything after giving my email a second time. However my card was charged in full day of call.

A day before our dive trip I accidentally called the wrong location to confirm and instead of checking our reservation and location the staff member informed me that they cancelled the trip because the government had pulled up the mooring lines on the reef and made it sound like this was for all locations. I asked why I never got a call explaining this even though they said that they knew a week ago? And she said it was a glitch in the system. I then went to Marathon location (where I had booked) and they said it was just for the one location and the trip was still a go. Too late I already asked for a refund. After several exchanges with this company I did get a refund. Very confusing staff that makes excuses and doesn't get their story straight. Would proceed with caution. Ended up going with another outfitter called A Deep Blue Dive Center and had a great experience.

Great experience! Safety is top priority (as it should be). Staff is friendly and super knowledgable. Visability on our first dive wasn't great, but we knew that going out because the communication was excellent. Our children were taking their AOW course. The weather was not cooperative when we were in Key West so they made arrangements for us to dive in Big Pine. Unbelievablly beautiful reef and worth the 30 minute drive north. Their instructor, Rob, was amazing. The captains and crews out of both shops (Key West and Big Pine) were knowledgable and fun. I would highly recommend Captain Hooks first class service from a family that has been scuba diving all over the world.

My daughter did her first SCUBA with Dive Master Henry at Captain Hooks in Marathon. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The boat captain was funny and professional.

I am a certified diver and have dived in the Keys before. Always beautiful. But with my daughter wanting to dive for the first time I was very nervous on the inside while encouraging her on the outside. Putting her life in the hands of a dive master I didn’t know at a dive shop I found on trip advisor.

All of my fears were alleviated with the care and professionalism of the staff and Dive Master Henry.

I even got to dive along side my daughter and Henry. She had one-on-one attention from him and he not only took care of her like she was his own, he also made it super fun! While under water he made sure to point out awesome fish, coral, a turtle and did a few tricks to show her (and me) how amazing this underwater world really is.

We did 2 dives and they were incredible! This mama’s heart is over-joyed and now to get her certified so mama has a dive partner!

My wife and I came to Marathon for our first time in the Keys. A friend of my wife’s said that one needs to go at least to Marathon to get the true feeling of being in the Caribbean. We really enjoyed the vibe and the water views of Marathon. We Vacation a lot in the Caribbean in March, but Covid came and we wanted to stay in the US. Florida Keys was the best option. Love this area. We are boat people and boat a lot on Lake Michigan, so we wanted to explore the water surrounding Marathon. We were very fortunate to rent a boat from Keysboats( Captain Hook’s). Kyle was great in renting us an 18ft deck boat( all that was available). Really a great boat, clean, upholstery really in great shape and the 150hp motor that worked well. All we wanted to do was explore and swim. Couldn’t have been happier with our boat for the day.

He made the entire experience enjoyable. We had an amazing time with him as a our instructor. We highly recommend him as an instructor for any one that wants to have a great time learning to dive. He truly made it an amazing day!!

I came down to the keys for a birthday vacation and had the pleasure of joining Captain Hook's charter to two dive locations. We were greeted by Summer in the shop, who was so polite and personable which was a great start. Once on the boat, the entire crew made us feel comfortable, safe, and excited for the day. We had Sydney as our guide through the reefs and boy was she a delight! She pointed out any amazing sea life she saw so the group could enjoy, and her confidence through the reefs made my (new diver) buddy extremely comfortable and happy. Great group of people for a great day of diving.

The crew, boat, location, shop....all of it... 10/10!
I've been on plenty of dive charters and this one was one of the absolute best. Book a dive and look no further!
