I came to Islamorada just to catch a sailfish, and I only had one day to do it. Luckily, CPT Rick and First Mate Cole were able to help me achieve my goal. After landing multiple other fish first, they worked extra hard searching for sailfish, and we finally located one and caught it.
This is my 2nd time fishing with Sea Horse. The crew is very experienced and knowledgeable about catching fish, and I would recommend them highly!

My wife and I recently booked a full-day fishing trip with Capt. Rick on the Sea Horse Charters. We arrived early and were met at the dock by Capt. Rick and First Mate, Cole. After boarding the Sea Horse, we took off out of Whale Harbor and headed straight to the bait store. A few minutes after arriving at the reef, Cole threw a perfect strike with the casting net and caught all the ballyhoo we needed to fish with.
We then headed out to sea and began trolling and within a half hour Captain spotted birds and a piece of debris floating. Cole threw a chunk of bait and hooked up with a dolphin and handed me the reel. While I was winding the dolphin towards the boat, he threw out another chunk and hooked up the second dolphin for my wife to reel in. We successfully landed both fish, but didn't see any others around, so we continued trolling on!
We trolled for awhile and didn't see any birds or weed lines, Capt. Rick was up in his tower most of the time looking for any signs of fish. Being the dedicated Captain that he is, he battled the choppy seas and leaky skies, and he wasn't giving up the search for the "big one"!
Around noon we could see a thunderstorm that was fairly widespread ahead of us and while Captain and Cole were drenched and continuously scanning the water and skies for signs of fish; we were completely dry and comfortable knowing that if they spotted fish, it was game on!
It finally stopped raining and the sun came out. We were still trolling and then came the "big hit"! We grabbed the outrigger pole and started reeling. When the fish was getting closer and leaped out of the water, Capt. Rick hollered, "it's a sailfish"! The adrenaline was pumping and after reeling for awhile, we got a successful touch and released the sailfish! What a beautiful sight and a great day on the Sea Horse.
If you want to catch fish and have a great time, you won't find a better team that is persistent in the hunt, and work as hard as these 2 guys to make their customers happy fishermen!!
THANKS Capt. Rick and Cole for another exciting day on the water and for fish in the cooler! Your the Best in the Business!

I highly recommend Captain Rick and Sea Horse Charters. My wife and I did a full day offshore charter with Rick and Cole, and had an incredible time. I researched several charters prior to booking this trip and saw that Rick received tons of outstanding reviews. He certainly lived up to all of them. He was not as expensive as some of the other charters. From the very beginning when I inquired about a charter, his communication was great and he kept that up the whole time. He even followed up with us after I trip. And of course one of the most important things, we caught a lot of fish. Rick absolutely knows how to put you on the fish. We thought it may potentially be a slow day because of the weather, but it turned out completely different and that is owed to Rick’s vast knowledge.
Rick was open to whatever we wanted to do, although we left it up to him. We literally fished the entire time. While we were getting bait, they were throwing in lines and we caught several great fish. And at the end when we were heading back to the marina, we pretty much trolled the entire way in. I read reviews on other charters where people complained that some of the captains suggested they head in early since they caught plenty of fish. Rick didn’t do that with us and I certainly couldn’t ever see him doing that with anyone. Rick also made us a reservation at a restaurant for that same night and we had a great meal eating some of our catches that day. We also have quite a bit of fish that we shipped home and we’ll be eating off of that for a while.
Cole was great to spend the day with as well. He was hilarious and we learned a lot from him on technique, etc. He was very passionate about us catching fish, and was absolutely working his tail off the entire time.
These are down to earth, good guys. Very knowledgeable, taught us a lot, and very fun to talk and joke around with, which certainly is a good thing after spending several hours together. We look forward to going out with Sea Horse Charters again when we make it back down to Islamorada.

Let me start by saying this review is about Sea Horse Charters, Captain Rick and First Mate Tommy. It is not about or related to the fish bite, which should never be the basis for a charter review (provided the captain and crew are giving it their all, which these guys certainly did). From the first phone call to the goodbye and thank you, Sea Horse was top notch. Captain Rick is a man who wants his clients to enjoy a safe and exciting fishing experience, not to just take your money. Tommy the First Mate works his tail off and uses his 54 years of knowledge to bring you to the fish. It was clear that our trip was planned during a decidedly tough stretch of weather for the area. Captain Rick went to great pains to ensure I understood the conditions, what they meant, and the uncertainty of fishing as a result. Both on the phone and in person, he encouraged me to be sure my family and I knew what we could be getting into and how difficult the seas were. In the end, I chose to press on because I wanted an offshore experience in the Keys and boy did I get one! The seas were rough, the wind was howling, the bite was weak at best. Two of us puked, the third kept her eyes closed. Tommy was incredibly gentle and attentive to my daughter and wife, and Johnny on the spot with whatever needs I had. He also maintained the rigs as we cruised for sailfish and mackerel. Yes, we caught a few smallish fish, enough for lunch for three, but never could hook up with anything terribly exciting. The seas were simply not having it. From ten foot swells, to a howling wind, the going was rough. Captain Rick and Tommy did their utmost to find the fish and it was clear they wanted to find them as badly as us, if not more so. Fishing in inclement weather is a crap shoot and this time we came up short, but not due to the lack of care, attention and professionalism of the crew of the Sea Horse. When I return to Islamorada, I will be sure to fish with Sea Horse Charters.

Capt Rick is a very professional guy, very knowledgeable about the waters surrounding Islamorada and Upper Matacumbe Key. I took my very good friend of many years with me on this trip of a lifetime. Sailfish, giant mutton snapper a king and a super sized barracuda proved to be excitement max especially on lightweight tackle. I was so impressed I'm taking my son next February and his wife. Everyone who loves to fish should book with Capt Rick and his first mate Cole at least once in their lifetime. Both these guys know how to catch monster fish and clean them. Sea Horse charters were worth every penny. I can't wait till I get to go out again with them. Absolutely the best fishing trip ever!!!

Extremely satisfied with my latest trip aboard the Seahorse with Captain Rick. This was my second time on the Seahorse. First off, I was pleasantly suprised that Captain Rick and First Mate Cole remembered our last experience and we shared some laughs and stories. Nice to see that they truly value their customers and are willing to make a personal connection.
I booked this trip with 3 of my friends from New York and we were looking for a break from the madness. Not only did we have a great time conversing with Rick and Cole, but we also HAMMERED Mahi and also managed to snag a Wahoo (the first one my friend has ever caught). Cole and Rick did a great job of giving instructions throughout to keep us safe and increase our success getting fish in the boat. One of my friends has never been fishing before and now he can't get enough due to this trip. I would recommend this charter to anyone, regardless of their skill level. Not only are you getting a highly skilled crew, you are also going to have a great time and a nice personal touch from Captain Rick!

I’ve fished with Captain Rick quite a few times now. There’s a reason we come back to the seahorse, it’s always a blast! Rick clearly cares that we catch and works HARD to make sure we hit the dock with a variety of fish. Not only that, but he and his crew are fun to fish with! They tell jokes, educate you on the local fishery and try and make it as fun of an experience in every aspect. If you want to catch fish, learn about the fishery and have a good time on the water; I can’t recommend them enough. We’ll be back again!

We took a roomies fishing trip for my boyfriend's birthday so that he could cross off Mahi on his fishing bucket list, and on the way he said he'd be happy with "catching 6 or 7 fish." By the end of our full day charter we left with 30 Mahi and a few Blackfin Tuna on the way as well. The whole day out on the boat with Captain Rick was so much fun and constant action. He let me come up in the tuna tower with him to look for the fish while the boys cast out on the bottom, as well as giving me some quality life advice in between spots. This is the first time any of us had gone offshore fishing and he was able to explain to us what to do very clearly to help us catch as many fish as possible. His first mate was also really friendly and always on top of everything. The day after our charter my boyfriend had already texted Captain Rick asking when he should come back for his next bucket list fish. I'm sure we'll be back within the next 6 months.

We booked a half day fishing tour the morning after a long haul flight from Germany. We thought it would be exhausting but actually it was the best thing we could have done. It was a gorgeous day with blue sky and a cool breeze. Captain Rick asked us what our expectations were regarding the type of fish we wanted to catch....and since we really didn't have any except for a tuna to eat for lunch/dinner... it made the morning stress free. We did go out to where we could possibly catch a sailfish but no luck. We changed locations another few times and thanks to 1st mate Cole, caught a few king fish and several black fin tuna, which we were very happy with. We were also given recommendations of where to have the fish cooked. The restaurant Lazy Days was amazing. We ate our catch there 3 times. My daughter said the seared Tuna in a sesame crust and the was the best fish she'd ever eaten. Would definitely book again. Thanks for a great day out!!

Absolutely the strongest recommendation possible. Captain Rick and Tommy were remarkable in ensuring everyone had a good time and we caught an amazing variety of fish. Balihoo, Red Snapper, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Vermilion, Blue Parrot, Almaco Jack and Bahnita. They worked their tales off to ensure we caught fish while being personable and fun. Boat was crystal clean and comfortable even in a rough sea.
Make sure you ensure a successful and good time and book your charter with them - pic does not show all we caught

I've been fishing since I was 5 on walleye lake in MN & saltwater fishing 8yrs now. I want to feel the bite & land my own fish. I don't want to be handed a rod after a mate has hooked it. Would I have that opportunity on your boat? Thanks.

I do not believe so. I will assume it will be very difficult to any captains or mates that do. Are you aware of the translation apps that are incredible. They actually convert the dialog to your language and vis versa. That should be a quick fix and I'm sure a lot of fun doing it. You did pick the best captain in the whale harbor fleet. He will put you on a lot of fish for sure
