Beautiful church

This church is open to the public and if you are at all interested in churches or architecture you should plan a visit. Just this week they decorated for Christmas.

What a treat...I do speak a little, maybe more than a little, Spanish, my husband zero...the enthusiasm at this mass was amazing! The deacons walked down the aisles before the service greeting everyone..we were sitting in the back and when he got to us said...and where are you from, we said Vero Beach, and conversation ensued, Miami vs. Vero, and... Ducked into the church when it was raining. Beautiful and welcoming. Felt good, said a prayer. Stop on your travels.

Stopped by to light a candle and we were pleasantly surprised at the historical ambiance of this building. We took numerous photos to remember this church.

If you're near the cemetery anyway, go ahead and walk up another block or so and check out this lovely open-air cathedral and prayer grotto. The grotto was said to have been constructed as a place where people can pray to keep Key West safe from hurricanes. It's worked as long as the grotto has existed. Not much here, but... More

The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea is located in a residential area on the north side of Duval. It was our objective, but getting there was a lovely walk providing us with insight into residential Key West. The church is simple, yet impressive. Floor to almost ceiling shuttered windows were thrown open to catch the breeze, providing... More

We always go to St. Mary's to light a candle when we're in Key West. It is so peaceful inside. I love how the windows open so while you're sitting inside, you can see the beautiful yard. We visited the gift shop in the back. They had such a large inventory of prayer cards, statues, rosaries, medals, etc.
