I tried for weeks leading up to my family’s visit to Key West to book a charter. I couldn’t get any on the phone, left messages that were not returned. Even tried to email and fill out the online form to no avail. Bad business.

My husband and I took the ASA 103 and 104 courses in November of 2017. We had 2 instructors, who had very different styles and focused on different skills and knowledge. Our first instructor had a deep knowledge of the local waters and history of Key West and surrounding islands. We did 2 overnights at anchor as we started our time on Sargasso, and despite the constant wind which never stopped, the instructor found spots that were very comfortable (and safe). It was our first time spending so much time on a sailboat, and we felt very comfortable with instructor and boat. The 2nd instructor did a great job drilling us on the parts and mechanicals of the boat. If you are a person who is less familiar with how the engine and other systems work, this is the instructor for you! Since all the lessons are customized, time is spent where needed. The sailboat Sargasso itself was very comfortable. The salon is wide and tall, 6’7” high which is great for us tall people. The galley was well equipped, cold plate very roomy, and a Yeti cooler near the cockpit held drinks cold for days. We loved the bean bag chairs after sailing (and docking practice). The marina was quiet and well taken care of, and it was fabulous to have a pool and restaurant. The schedule of our time on Sargasso didn’t go as planned, so it’s important to be flexible. And the weather didn’t go as planned either, which affected where we could sail. But that’s just one more lesson in our sailing journey.

For our annual family vacations, we are always looking for activities that are "over the top" fun, as well as "over the top" safe. And Kimber Tracy, owner of Key West Sailing Academy and Yacht Charter, did not disappoint! In July, 2017, my family and I (8 of us) chartered SV No Expectations for 10 days of cruising throughout the lower Florida Keys and Marquesas. Kimber guided us every step of the way: from recommending Capt Chris Toye to give us our "check-out" sail several weeks prior to the main event, to reviewing our bare-boat float plan and making helpful recommendations before we embarked on our 10-day bare-boat adventure. There was no shortage of fishing, lobstering, sailing, snorkeling, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, grilling freshly caught fish off the back of the boat, and sleeping under the stars. A fellow sailor herself, as well as a successful businesswoman in her own right, Kimber is straight up, honest, and fair; and she strives to deliver a top-notch product each and every time. Her staff likewise reflect these values. I would highly recommend KWSA to anyone looking for a fun, safe, affordable sailing adventure in the Florida Keys.

We spent Spring Break on the catamaran “No Expectations” after an unexpected last minute change from our original charter company to Key West Sailing Academy and Yacht Charter. No Expectations was recently added to her fleet, and owner Kimber Tracy took on the challenge and bent over backwards to get the boat ready for us, including all new linens and soft goods, as well as any general maintenance that needed to be done. She was professional, responsive and friendly. We would happily work with her again. Captain Chris was fantastic – a great sailor and person. He created an itinerary for us which included plenty of sailing, great snorkeling, dolphin watching and lots of interesting historical and ecological information culled from his years leading tours. He was very easy to be with and folded right in to our two families, enjoying meals and evening games with us. We highly recommend him, and we would love to sail with him again.
