My favorite artist in Key West

I have been coveted Amanda's paintings for years, and now finally have a few of my own. She is the sweetest, friendliest person. It is a pleasure to walk into her gallery and visits with her and her gorgeous brightly colored paintings. Whether you live nearby, or far away, her paintings are a wonderful addition to any collection.

A Must-See Art Gallery in Key West
Dec 2014 • Couples
Amanda Johnson’s paintings are some of the most exciting works of art in Key West. She paints with bold, vivid, layered on strokes built up with a palette knife. Her canvases come alive with movement. Amanda herself is a delight in person. You can find her most days at her studio and she is happy to talk with you about her art, her background and her technique. She is a pleasure to work with as we discovered when we commissioned an original painting from her.

We had taken a photograph of the last sunset on the last night, December 31 of the year 2014, at Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West, Florida. It was gorgeous, a picture-perfect photo, and we thought we would blow it up and frame it. The next day we stopped into Amanda Johnson’s art gallery (again). Her paintings had beckoned us into her gallery several times on this trip. Her subjects are local scenes in Key West, including many of palm trees, parrots, roosters, the beach, fish, pelicans, and sunsets. We were so taken with “our” sunset we had just seen on New Year’s Eve that we showed her the photo on our digital camera. And in a split second, we commissioned her to paint it in her thick, palette knife style.

We told her to take her time. A large, expertly packaged box arrived about three months after our trip. The finished painting was well worth the wait. She converted what was already a stunning photo and meaningful memory into a vibrant masterpiece of texture and color. She was able to both faithfully capture the realism of the image while enhancing and adding dimension to it with her creative eye and execution so the colors are bright and the composition fluid and balanced. The water moves, the sun lights the sky, the reflection shimmers golden in the blue water, the palm tree, the boat and the buoy balance the dramatic movement of colors. The painting is a focal point on our wall to all who see it and a beautiful commemoration of our six years together and of our many trips to Key West, a place we love to visit. Amanda Johnson’s paintings exhibit depth of color and courageous strokes that appear to be in motion even long after the paint has dried. Her art is a representation of some of the many aspects of Key West, sights those who live and visit there can see every day, which she depicts in an indelible, lush, and exuberant way. Her gallery is a must-see while in Key West.

a terrific place to visit
Feb 2014 • Couples
Amanda is very friendly and enthusiastic about her art, about Key West, and about connecting with visitors. She answered questions about her technique and made us feel welcome. We stepped inside when we saw a small "Artist in Residence" sign and we feel as if we made a new friend. We fell in love with a painting in the window and had it shipped to us. It arrived safely and in perfect condition and now reminds us of our great visit to KW.
