- Jo-Ann BSeekonk, Massachusetts9 contributionsIf you love nature, you must goThis place is simply magical. I could have stayed there for hours just observing the butterflies & birds. I wish the facility was bigger and had more areas where you could sit and take it all in. A blue Morpho butterfly landed on my shoulder and stayed there for almost 10 minutes as I walked around.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 3, 2024
- KB231blue271 contributionsLovely SurpriseI loved our visit to this small conservatory. There was a small variety of butterflies in the conservatory but I loved the tropical birds so much more. The birds were so colorful and I had never seen any like them before. The flamingos (Rhet and Scarlet) were also entertaining as Rhet was courting Scarlet with lots of talking and feather waving displays.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 14, 2024
- Gare R29 contributionsA MustVisited twice now. Just gets better. So many butterflies it's amazing. At the very south end of Duval street. Recommended this place to a friend whom loved it. Great gift shop. Even some birds in the green house. Very busy.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 26, 2024
- Karen C20 contributionsA Calm & Quiet BreakOn Duval Street, between United St and South St, is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. It is a calm, quiet oasis after all the crowds and busy-ness on the streets. On the way in I thought the admission was a little pricy, but it was so worth it! Walking through the double air-lock doors was like going into another world. Butterflies were flitting everywhere! They share the space with several species of tropical birds and even some turtles. Relax and enjoy.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2024
- 46oceangirlWestford, Massachusetts1,810 contributionsIt's a must! This place was so cool. Butterflies and birds, and a pair of flamingos as well. Beautiful butterflies. They have a video informative section before you enter and when you leave they make sure no butterflies are on you as one stuck to my husbands shirt. The gift shop is where you exit. Worth the stop in the keys. Just a reminder its hot in there along with the keys weather outside but still a great stop.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024
- Suzy BMinneapolis, Minnesota56 contributionsAmazing experience!!!I can't say enough nice things about this place! We all had an amazing time here! It was so beautiful and magical. The butterflies are stunning! Beautiful gift shop and the associates working there are all very nice. I wish I had seen this the 1st day we were down as you can visit it all day. Our hotel was across the street at the Southernmost which is walking distance.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 2, 2024
- Tom RCarlsbad, California74 contributionsPrepare to be AmazedWhat neat experience. Plan on at least a full hour to go through the exhibits and the butterfly area. We have a butterfly farm near us in Encinitas - but nothing like this place. A must stop when in Key WestVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024
- TianxingzhePhoenixville, Pennsylvania25 contributionsa must do when in Key WestIt was a wonderful experience visiting this place. The Conservatory not only has many different species of butterflies, but also has many local flowers, plants, two flamingos, turtles, and many beautiful birds. The staff there are very friendly and knowledgeable, answering any question you may have. It does get crowded, so go there early. I bought my ticket online, which came with two dollar discount.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 5, 2024
- J R LDavis, California52 contributionsa must see!a must visit. You enter a room with lots of mounted butterflies & an excellent movie on butterfly growth & feeding. You then enter a tall glassed room at 80 degrees & 80% humidity. It is filled with over 100 various butterflies flying around you & often landing on you. They are feeding on plates of fruit, watermelon, banana, etc. There are also small birds & two pink pelicians. The room is filled with lots of plants 7 flowers. There is limited seating but you might sit or just stand to take it all in for 1/2 hour or more. It is an amazing experience.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024

Very nicely layed out pathway to follow. Birds, fauna and of course the butterflies!!! We visit the Butterfly House every time we come to Key West. This is always a memorable part of our trip. The cost is about $15 per person, but you can re-enter again on the same day! It is located at 1316 Duval Street. The best time to visit is in the morning because the butterflies are more active then. Butterflies love the color red. If you are hoping to attract a butterfly, wear a red shirt. In addition to the beautiful butterflies, you will also see a variety of birds including 2 flamingos!!! The staff is very friendly and helpful. They share many interesting facts about everything you will encounter. The Butter Fly House is open every day at 9 and closes at 5. 4:30 is the latest you can enter. We usually spend between 1-2 hours here. There is also a nice gift shop at the location. We highly recommend you plan to visit the Butterfly House.

The very best money we spent in Key West was for the 45 minute Flamingle held after closing hours. I am a huge fan of flamingos and the Conservatory is home to Rhett and Scarlett flamingo. The store has many items for gift giving, and the butterfly collection is simply amazing. The plants are beautiful, birds are gorgeous and the property is well maintained. The staff is fully focused on their customers and I recommend this site to everyone - young and old!

We visited this place one morning. The cost to get in is $15 and we spent about 1.5 hours going through it. The conservancy is a nice little walk through a large greenhouse. The number of butterflies and other animals in it is amazing and beautiful.
I would advise this little tour for anyone with kids. I would also recommend that if you want to go, to get there before the cruise ships unboard. After the cruise ships dock, this area gets flooded with tourists because of the southernmost point landmark.

This was a charming, refreshing surprise.
You first walk into a gift shop with many original crafted items with butterfly theme. We had a coupon from a booklet from our hotel so we were able to get some money off of the admission price which is still very reasonable, $15 a person. It goes towards maintenance of the butterfly conservatory, which is a very worthy cause.
When you first walk in you notice the humidity, but you get used to it. We had many butterflies flying across our path and around our heads. It was fabulous! They also had some bird baths throughout that had pieces of fruit in them. Both butterflies and birds would congregate around, flapping their wings. Great photo opp! There were also many species of small birds and nests made out of coconuts. There is a nice bridge and a small pond with 2 flamingos.
Truly a refreshing and enjoyable time and worth the trip.

This review is meant as a warning to others. We got lucky and found this info in time. You must purchase your tickets and enter before 4:30 (even though it’s open until 5:30). The staff is unpleasant and overly focused on enforcing that 4:30 cut off as they all clearly would rather be elsewhere based on their attitude and loud conversation.
That all being said, the place itself is great, really peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful nature, awesome butterflies and birds. We loved it. But holy god the attitude problems. As we were leaving we heard a family being tossed rudely because they were there at 4:32 pm. Mind you, it doesn’t take an hour to go through this exhibit, that’s just their rule and they intend to enforce it.
The bitter pink haired older female employee in particular took obvious satisfaction in refusing people entry. This staff needs flat out fired and new ones brought in. Nice butterflies only get you so far in life

If you can visit only one place in Key West, do not miss the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. An educational video is playing in the room you first enter. There are several displays and sections of live caterpillars to view. Once you enter the gardens, you will see numerous species of butterflies and moths flying and lighting on various plants (and sometimes, people). In addition to the butterflies, there are unusual and beautiful birds, including two flamingos named Rhett and Scarlett. You will feel as though you are in a tropical rain forest without the rain! Stay as long as you like or come back again later in the day. Also, the gift shop is not your average tourist trap. The works of local artisans fill the second section of the gift shop. I would recommend spending a couple of hours at the Conservatory but you can see most of it in an hour if necessary.

This place was widely recommended to us. There are also $2 discount vouchers for this place available in all the tourist leaflets - everyone appeared to be using them.
This is a small place so don't expect the visit to take very long but it is nicely done. There is an educational room before you enter a conservatory with a nice array of plants, small colourful birds and butterflies with free space to roam. It's very pretty but it was extremely crowded, which took away some of the enjoyment for me. You may wish to come very early.
Something else that bothered me were the two flamingos - flamingos are animals that live in large flocks so having just two in a smallish space didn't seem to support animal wellbeing to me. I think that a place that promotes itself on conservation grounds should consider the welfare of all animals it keeps.

This is a miraculous place! When you pay for entry, you're given a time and you can go through as many times as you'd like until that time. We went through twice! I loved learning about the butterflies. There are also flamingos and different birds flying around as well.
I would go back in a heartbeat!

You have to be careful in Key West because almost all the attractions are expensive and only some of them are worth it. Have been to many butterfly attractions and this is definitely one of the better ones.
Admission is a pricey $15/adult, $12 for seniors, and $11 for kids that even a dedicated butterfly lover would not spend more than an hour in. You can save $2 off adult admission by finding a coupon in the Key West brochure.
However, the butterfly house is absolutely flooded with butterflies that include lots of different species. In addition, there are some beautiful birds and even two flamingos you can get close to.
Parking is fairly convenient as there is a city lot next to the butterfly house that you can park in for $5. Combine a visit here with the Southernmost point marker (about two blocks away)

If it weren't for the buy one, get one coupon we found to get us into this place, the rating would have been even lower. The place is super small and we spent barely 30 minutes (it's $15 a person!). The place doesn't seem to be doing a very good job at limiting the number of people in the conservatory or enforcing social distancing. We didn't feel very safe on that level.

Agree No. it’s small in there really hot humid too. Unless service dog check w the facility. There were no pets in there at all. There are flamingos birds etc. highly unlikely dogs allowed.

Is there parking at the Butterfly Conservatory?
Written October 11, 2023
Hi There:
They do have a small parking lot in the back of their building. This parking lot is first come first serve. There is also street parking for a fee. Hope this helps.

What is the least busy time of day to visit?
Written January 24, 2023
I went right when they opened at 9 and after speaking with an employee there I was told that's when the birds and butterflies are most active.
Written January 26, 2023
Posted prices were $12 adults $9 military (there are nearby military bases). Plus you can get $2 off coupons in the free tourist guides near the piers and major attractions.
Also I noticed online there are some ticket packages that bundle the Butterfly Conservatory with either the conch train or the streetcar, but Key West also has the free “Duvall shuttle” bus that runs on a loop and has a stop close to the Conservatory.

How long does one usually stay & visit?
Thx for your time and opinions! Much appreciated!

The area is very small but there is much to take in and admire. I spent about 1/2 hr looking at the many butterflies flying around, butterflies hatching, plans, birds, and the resident flamingoes. It was not at all crowded the day I went, so the path through it was open and I did not feel rushed. But you could actually walk straight through it in a couple of minutes.

We are going to Miami; Key West in November of this year. Has anyone been to the Butterfly Exhibit during this time? Wondering if the butterflies are out during this season.

They release butterflies everyday that have come out of the cocoon stage. Flowers and plants are beautiful year round. There are also birds and other little creatures there. The flamingos are great to watch and have unique personalities

Has anyone done the meeting greet with the flamingos
Written April 6, 2019
The meet and greet is absolutely amazing. You have to make reservations because only 6 people a day can participate.
