- Voyager71107423 contributionsWon’t disappoint!!I did not want to go, but my sisters and mom did so I played along and happily went. I LOVED it! Went through twice. Just beautiful and peaceful. Butterflies EVERYWHERE. Very active! Would highly recommend Free parking on one side of the building, paid in the other. Gift shop too is neat and everyone working is so helpful. They sell postcard stamps too.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 8, 2023
- Karen AHouston, Texas14 contributionsButterflies! You must visit this awesome facility in Key West! From the moment you walk in until the moment you leave, you will be completely happy to be able to experience so much natural beauty loving cared for by an amazing staff! And you can even return later in the day for another visit with your receipt! We lingered quite some time, walking clockwise and counterclockwise with ease (October is a great time to be in the Keys). We learned about the process of getting the butterfly larvae, the lifecycle of the butterflies as well as hearing about the resident flamingoes and birds! This is a bucket list item in Key West for sure!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 9, 2023
- Lizzyjd68Rossendale, United Kingdom32 contributionsA wonderful visitMy husband wasn't really bothered about going but I dragged him along, he absolutely loved it. It's like entering a different world! So many different species of butterflies and moths flying around, plus so many birds I had only ever seen on photos. We took over an hour walking slowly around admiring it all. There's plenty of seating too to rest and take it all in.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 11, 2023

So many beautiful butterflies in a lush, tropical garden. We could easily have spent far longer than we did.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 27, 2023
- Explorer680303247376 contributionsMust Do, You will not regret it!Wow, this was amazing and absolutely a must do. When you enter the conservatory you are immediately surrounded by hundreds of butterflies flying all around you. Every direction you look there is more. The plants are gorgeous. We also got to see flamingos, turtles and birds! The staff was so friendly and informative.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 30, 2023
- Savvy MamaPalm Bay, Florida120 contributionsBeautiful Visit, love this butterfly garden!Ahhh finally I have made it to this beautiful Key West butterfly garden! After many trips that the timing just didn't work out, I had it as our first stop this time. I see some people in the reviews commenting that it is small or not worth the cost. I will say that it is an outdoor but enclosed garden, and the entire path which winds three times is short, but it is highly concentrated. Come and watch the butterflies living their best life, feasting on fruit plates and flying all over. When you are here you can feel the delicate but intricately designed wings of all the butterflies and at any time there are up to 1500 butterflies in the garden. We were also quite amazed by some birds who were building a nest inside of a bird house. The flamingos are cool, they seem to hang out in the stream. Beautiful species everywhere you look, and great exotic plants. Your ticket allows for multiple entries that day and we raced through the information gallery into the garden area. I suggest a return to that first room to digest it all and gain some insight, then another walk into the garden. Don't pass by the nursery, which shows where all of the chrysalises are. The garden hours are 9 - 4:30 and while it is beautiful there is so much to do here in this area and when visiting with the kids can really keep it moving! While I find the price is fair, I do wish they had a teacher discount or a family discount. Also in the area we visited the Hemmingway House and the Southern Most Point. I have a travel blog where I give itinerary suggestions and share planning details freely. Link is in my bio.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 7, 2023
- NanumsManhasset, New York311 contributionsLike everyone else…we loved this nature experience! We’ve been to the butterfly conservatory in Phoenix, but we both agree that Key West surpasses that. Butterflies surround you as you walk in the Conservatory. If you’re a butterfly fan, you can get ideas of what they’re feeding them. Very interesting birds to see if you’re observant. The best gift shop for a little Christmas shopping. Don’t miss it!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 8, 2023

- AD Z5 contributionsButterflies, birds, battlestar galactica !Fantastic experience with so many butterflies & birds plus two beautiful flamingos! Walking through a lush rainforest like environment you’ll see so many brilliant colors on the butterfly wings. Lots to learn also if you take a minute to read all the information available. Cool gift shop that includes real butterfly display art pieces. Great visit for all ages.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 26, 2023
- abcjjlEasley, South Carolina1,534 contributionsSo relaxing............The Butterfly and Nature Conservatory was recommended to us by a friend of my wife. So glad we did it. Price is reasonable. Experience was outstanding. The butterflies and birds were beautiful. We toured fairly early on Saturday morning in early November. The place was not overly crowded at the time of our visit which made it even more enjoyable. What we experienced was such a relaxing experience. I found myself feeling so at peace just standing quietly watching the creatures. The colors are just mind blowing. If I returned to the area I would do the tour again. Lovely gift shop was a fun walk though, also.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 8, 2023

This was a charming, refreshing surprise.
You first walk into a gift shop with many original crafted items with butterfly theme. We had a coupon from a booklet from our hotel so we were able to get some money off of the admission price which is still very reasonable, $15 a person. It goes towards maintenance of the butterfly conservatory, which is a very worthy cause.
When you first walk in you notice the humidity, but you get used to it. We had many butterflies flying across our path and around our heads. It was fabulous! They also had some bird baths throughout that had pieces of fruit in them. Both butterflies and birds would congregate around, flapping their wings. Great photo opp! There were also many species of small birds and nests made out of coconuts. There is a nice bridge and a small pond with 2 flamingos.
Truly a refreshing and enjoyable time and worth the trip.

This review is meant as a warning to others. We got lucky and found this info in time. You must purchase your tickets and enter before 4:30 (even though it’s open until 5:30). The staff is unpleasant and overly focused on enforcing that 4:30 cut off as they all clearly would rather be elsewhere based on their attitude and loud conversation.
That all being said, the place itself is great, really peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful nature, awesome butterflies and birds. We loved it. But holy god the attitude problems. As we were leaving we heard a family being tossed rudely because they were there at 4:32 pm. Mind you, it doesn’t take an hour to go through this exhibit, that’s just their rule and they intend to enforce it.
The bitter pink haired older female employee in particular took obvious satisfaction in refusing people entry. This staff needs flat out fired and new ones brought in. Nice butterflies only get you so far in life

If you can visit only one place in Key West, do not miss the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. An educational video is playing in the room you first enter. There are several displays and sections of live caterpillars to view. Once you enter the gardens, you will see numerous species of butterflies and moths flying and lighting on various plants (and sometimes, people). In addition to the butterflies, there are unusual and beautiful birds, including two flamingos named Rhett and Scarlett. You will feel as though you are in a tropical rain forest without the rain! Stay as long as you like or come back again later in the day. Also, the gift shop is not your average tourist trap. The works of local artisans fill the second section of the gift shop. I would recommend spending a couple of hours at the Conservatory but you can see most of it in an hour if necessary.

This place was widely recommended to us. There are also $2 discount vouchers for this place available in all the tourist leaflets - everyone appeared to be using them.
This is a small place so don't expect the visit to take very long but it is nicely done. There is an educational room before you enter a conservatory with a nice array of plants, small colourful birds and butterflies with free space to roam. It's very pretty but it was extremely crowded, which took away some of the enjoyment for me. You may wish to come very early.
Something else that bothered me were the two flamingos - flamingos are animals that live in large flocks so having just two in a smallish space didn't seem to support animal wellbeing to me. I think that a place that promotes itself on conservation grounds should consider the welfare of all animals it keeps.

This is a miraculous place! When you pay for entry, you're given a time and you can go through as many times as you'd like until that time. We went through twice! I loved learning about the butterflies. There are also flamingos and different birds flying around as well.
I would go back in a heartbeat!

You have to be careful in Key West because almost all the attractions are expensive and only some of them are worth it. Have been to many butterfly attractions and this is definitely one of the better ones.
Admission is a pricey $15/adult, $12 for seniors, and $11 for kids that even a dedicated butterfly lover would not spend more than an hour in. You can save $2 off adult admission by finding a coupon in the Key West brochure.
However, the butterfly house is absolutely flooded with butterflies that include lots of different species. In addition, there are some beautiful birds and even two flamingos you can get close to.
Parking is fairly convenient as there is a city lot next to the butterfly house that you can park in for $5. Combine a visit here with the Southernmost point marker (about two blocks away)

If it weren't for the buy one, get one coupon we found to get us into this place, the rating would have been even lower. The place is super small and we spent barely 30 minutes (it's $15 a person!). The place doesn't seem to be doing a very good job at limiting the number of people in the conservatory or enforcing social distancing. We didn't feel very safe on that level.

This place is a must while visiting Key West. The variety of butterflies and tropical birds (yes birds, look up in the trees to spot them) is amazing. Go early in the day as admission allows you to come back as often as you like throughout the same day.

We liked the conservatory but any more then 10 people in it and you cant move. It's a small place. The gift shop is bigger then the conservatory. They had 2 turtles, 2 flamingoes, finches, quail and many butterflies. They should get rid of half the gift shop and expand the conservatory. It's not a place you can spend an hour at because it's too small and depending on how many people want to get in, you have to move out to let others in.

We went there around 2 and we were the last guests to be allowed to go in on Christmas day. Make sure go early. They close early on Christmas eve as well. It was so worth it. My daughter and I had great time there.

Agree No. it’s small in there really hot humid too. Unless service dog check w the facility. There were no pets in there at all. There are flamingos birds etc. highly unlikely dogs allowed.

Is there parking at the Butterfly Conservatory?
Written October 11, 2023
Hi There:
They do have a small parking lot in the back of their building. This parking lot is first come first serve. There is also street parking for a fee. Hope this helps.

What is the least busy time of day to visit?
Written January 24, 2023
I went right when they opened at 9 and after speaking with an employee there I was told that's when the birds and butterflies are most active.
Written January 26, 2023
Posted prices were $12 adults $9 military (there are nearby military bases). Plus you can get $2 off coupons in the free tourist guides near the piers and major attractions.
Also I noticed online there are some ticket packages that bundle the Butterfly Conservatory with either the conch train or the streetcar, but Key West also has the free “Duvall shuttle” bus that runs on a loop and has a stop close to the Conservatory.

How long does one usually stay & visit?
Thx for your time and opinions! Much appreciated!

The area is very small but there is much to take in and admire. I spent about 1/2 hr looking at the many butterflies flying around, butterflies hatching, plans, birds, and the resident flamingoes. It was not at all crowded the day I went, so the path through it was open and I did not feel rushed. But you could actually walk straight through it in a couple of minutes.

They release butterflies everyday that have come out of the cocoon stage. Flowers and plants are beautiful year round. There are also birds and other little creatures there. The flamingos are great to watch and have unique personalities
