We went a hour before sunset , since this place gets crowd. We just happen to be by the set-up for "Cat Man". I do Not recommend the "show" he seemed drunk and keep yelling at the cats. I don't find humor in hold up a cat's tail and shouting at it butt funny. He also ask kids from the audience to stand in a line and yells at them. If I was these kids parents, I would not have allowed them to be treated that way. One of the cat took off running and I was actually rooting for the cat to get away from this crazy guy. There other performers in Mallory Square that much better, even the lady singing off key with a guitar seem less harmless than this guy - and there are better place to see sunset without all the distractions.

The sunset celebration on Mallory sq in Key West is a tradition and a famous thing to do. It's pretty much touristy, but still OK for one time - I wouldn't come there twice.
Just before the sunset the sq gets packed with people. There are many street performers, musicians and a huge array of food stalls.

First off, if you’re there in July, the sun will not set over the water, it sets behind the island that’s across from Mallory Square, so nothing different from a regular “land” sunset. It is still very beautiful with all the colors in the sky but not as spectacular as watching the sun “melt” into the water. Fun watching all of the sunset boat tours going by as well. Being Key West, there tends to be some very flavorful language and behavior that you might want to be cautious of with children. The street performers were fine, interesting to see man on tightrope juggling swords and fire. Lots of little stands selling trinkets. Public bathrooms are available but close at sunset or immediately before. Very crowded and almost impossible to find parking($4/hour). Should you go out of your way and rearrange your plans to be at Mallory Square for sunset? Not during the summer, you can see it just as good from other spots. If you want the crazy Key West sunset experience then this is it.

My husband and I have been visiting since the seventies, the sunset on Mallory Square has always been a daily ritual for everyone visiting KW, just by reading reviews I see this is no longer the case. There are only a few performers now although they are still wonderful as are the few vendors. I hope the decline is due to Covid and not a trend that continues, chill out and watch the sun set, people!

The area is so crowded that in order to see the sunset without rows of people in front of you holding their cameras high, you need to sit on the stone wall at least 45 minutes in advance…there are many other places to see the sunset without wasting 45 minutes on a concrete wall next to drunk folks. Street performers were…interesting. If you have kids under 13, I’d steer clear of the Sunset “celebration.”

It is fantastic to see so many people gather to celebrate the sunset and local flair. You do have to get here quite a bit earlier than sunset time to not only find a place to sit, but see the sunset (I have missed it more than once before thinking I had a plan). We got there on time for a spell of celebration and eventually scored a seat for the sunset show.

We always do the Sunset Celebration when we're in Key West. This year it was a little different because of Covid. Not nearly as many performers and none of the kiosks were open. I totally understand and we'll be back next year.

Sun sets. That is a fact. Another fact is this place is packaged nicely for tourists. Run of mill views.

Make sure you get there early for a good spot right up front!! Grab a coconut drink, popcorn, or some other snack and take a seat. Take in all the local artists, vendors, and performers. You will gradually see the crowd build for the greatest show in Key West....the sunset. If you are lucky enough on certain evenings you may catch the green flash!!

My husband and I visit KW a few times each year, sometimes solo, sometimes with friends. We have never started our evening at anyplace other the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. We get a mojito at El Maison de Pepe (much better than the vendors along the water), then watch the street performers and pretend to haggle with the art vendors. The crowd slowly swells as sunset approaches (the celebration officially begins 2 hours before sunset), culminating with the sunset. You'll see schooners and other sunset cruises out on the water, and getting a seat along the water is like getting a seat in a crowded NYC subway car.....you have to be a little aggressive if you don't arrive early. While watching the sky change colors, we discuss our plans for the rest of the evening.....where to have dinner, whether or not to have another mojito for the walk to dinner, which of our local bartender friends to visit after dinner.....you know, very important vacation decisions.

Hi, has the sunset celebration restarted since the keys are back open? We are bringing key west newbies and were hoping that we could let see this great celebration!
