A lovely garden
Nov 2021
This was a lovely spot to spend an hour or so. There is no fee, but it is worth making a donation. The site was absolutely beautiful and has the ruins of an old fort incorporated into the gardens. There is ample free parking if you arrive via car.

Such a great find! Lovely little garden that is supported by volunteers. Easy to get to, right on Smathers Beach - but easy to miss as well. Enjoyed our time here.

Caribbean Garden Wonder in Key West ... and its FREE!
Jul 2021
Whilst visiting Higgs Beach and on my way to find the African burial ground I accidentally came upon this place. It is a civil war fort that has been turned into a beautiful garden on the sea! I am not a big garden person, but I loved it!

I am from the Caribbean and so believe me when I say that you will really feel like you are in the Caribbean when you visit this garden. It is so creatively put together with so many flowers, cacti, plants, trees, sculptures, a butterfly garden area, and lots of spots for excellent photos. It would be a perfect venue for a wedding.

You can visit this place and tour it yourself in 30 min but you may not want to leave it!

The people who created and work in this place are volunteers and this is their passion and it shows in the garden paradise they created.

Spent 1 week in Key West and yes, did the jets tour and swam with dolphins and the Fort Zachary, but THIS GARDEN is at the top of my list as the hidden gem!!

The kicker is that it is all FREE and they just receive any donation you wish to make but it is voluntary.

If you visit Key West go to this place. You will not regret it!!

Thank you for the kind review. The renovation to the fort are complete. Come see the newly historically built archway/tunnel to the citadel. Imagine what the fort looked like around the civil war.

Very beautiful! Great for some pictures and nature. Right next to it is Higgs Beach, AIDS memorial, and a pier that is pretty to walk to. Beautiful fountain inside as well. Takes maybe an hour to look at everything

Must visit while in Key West
May 2021 • Couples
First time visit. Coming to keys for over 40 years. Finally checked this place out. Fantastic visit. Eloise, a volunteer and long time resident, was the star of the gardens. Wonderful to talk to her. Gardens are worth seeing and I will be back

Thank you for your review. The garden also has a gift shop with garden-related merchandise of aprons, gloves, t-shirts, visors, caps and water bottles. Plants are for sale in propagation every Monday 9:30 to 11:30. In the fall and winter plants are also for sale in the courtyard everyday.

This is such a wonderful place! Beautiful gardens winding through the inside of an old fort overlooking the ocean. Lots of places to sit and appreciate. The butterfly garden was breathtaking and active!

This is a magnificent stop--and free. Never have I seen so many orchids--so beautiful. Words cannot express the beauty. There is also parking nearby. This is a perfect calm--great to escape to from Duvall St.

Tropical Garden Walk
Feb 2021
Tropical garden walk through an old West Martello tower fort. Many little trails of different themes, such as a butterfly garden, several orchid gardens, ground covers in artistic landscaping settings. Interesting for any one interested in botany, gardening or a lovely stroll. Free with donation. It's in the area of White Pier so it's a great stop for viewing the AIDS Memorial, walk along the White Pier and watch. the acrobatic paragliders entertain us and next to the African Cemetery commemorating the abandoned slaves brought over on the last ships from Africa. The master gardeners apparently are only there in the morning if you have questions. Lovely and interesting plant varieties. Everyone seemed to enjoy it of all ages, Very clean restrooms with water fountain.

Went there on the guidance of a locals travel book and it was fantastic! Located at Higgs Beach, it is a nice break from the sun and has gorgeous grounds and plantings.
