- Brandon FNewport, North Carolina3 contributionsGreat Trip!Boat crew was awesome ensuring a good trip. Plenty to eat and drink throughout the day. Food was fresh bagels and Jersey Mikes but other food could be purchased on the ride home. The visit to the park goes by fast but it’s well worth it. A good mix of history and scenery.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 12, 2022
- 307levenStroudsburg, Pennsylvania284 contributionsGreat trip - highly recommendedWe took the boat tour from 100 Grinnel St, Key West on Wednesday, December 7th. The cost was $200/person, but I got a $10 senior discount (age 62) and another $30 discount because I had a senior lifetime national park pass, thus the total was $360, but it was worth it. We avoided the $40 parking fee at 300 Grinnel St. because we just walked there from the hotel. I recommend booking this tour in advance as we did because the tour was fully booked. The boat ride was about 2 1/2 hours each way and is about 70 miles. On the way, they gave us a breakfast bagel. We arrived just before 10:30 and had an excellent tour given to us that started at 11am that lasted about 1 1/2 hours. The tour guide was great and answered all our questions and described the history of Fort Jefferson and Tortugas as our group walked throughout sections of the fort. After that, they served lunch on the boat which consisted of a sandwich, snack and a non alcohol drink. Afterwards, we walked throughout the fort, the moat surrounding it, the beach and finally the small gift shop and museum inside the fort. We had to leave by 2:30pm, so we didn't have enough time to go swimming or snorkeling, but some passengers did. They even supply the snorkeling equipment and have an area to change. We arrived back at Key West around 5pm. Overall, it was a great time. If you go, consider taking Dramamine in advance for motion sickness, especially if the waves are a little rough. Also, bring sunscreen as there is no shade except underneath the fort walls, Bring water as well to stay hydrated.Visited December 2022Written December 22, 2022
- Wendy RGreensboro, North Carolina249 contributionsDT National Park - checkWe took the Ferry thinking it would be nice to sit and enjoy the ride over (2.5 hours), but it is just too crowded and the seas were rough that day. There is a float plane option which is shorter, but not sure that would have been any better. The park was really nice and enjoyed walking around it. The weather was unseasonably cold and water temps were in the 60's so we didn't get to snorkel (which is included in the Ferry's ticket) not the plane. The breakfast was a plain cold bagel which I think is mainly to get something in your stomach for sea sickness. The lunch was good also included. The staff were AMAZING and super helpful. There was a bar with other food and snacks you could buy and VERY reasonably priced. There is a garage you can park in for the day for $40.Visited December 2022Written January 3, 2023
- TeamTex186 contributionsFun Trip and Guide was AmazingWe went to Dry Tortugas and enjoyed the experience. The guide who gave the tour is named Hollywood (I think). He has an amazing amount of knowledge and it made the experience even better. We walked around on our own also and I went snorkeling. There aren't too many fish until you get near the abandoned peers or the wall. The crew does a great job of making everyone feel welcome. Overall it was worth the 2 1/2 trip each way.Visited January 2023Written January 22, 2023

- JoanMGRockville, Maryland23 contributionsUnique visit to a National Park via the Yankee Freedom FerryWe had a beautiful day for our visit. The Yankee Freedom Ferry staff were excellent. It's a long day - the ferry ride is about 2 1/2 hours each way. Fort Jefferson was far more interesting than I thought it would be. We took the 30 minute tour with "Holiday" He continued with a more extensive tour for folks who wanted to continue. The views from the top of the Fort were great. Light breakfast/boxed lunch and tours were included in the cost of the Ferry as well as snorkeling equipment. The views from the top of the Fort were terrific.Visited January 2023Written February 4, 2023
- Donna GJohnstown, Pennsylvania41 contributionsSnorkeling at Dry TortugasWe took the National park ferry over to Dry tortugas. We were too late toget tickets in advance. But we got up very early and went to ferry dock, to get on a list of standby. The ferry service offered a breakfast of bagel, fruit, juice, coffee, tea. Our main goal was snorkeling. Doing snorkeling around the south and north pillions was the best part of trip. Go out deeper in north pillions for fabulous viewing of many fish. The live coral on the pillions was spectacular.Visited February 2023Written February 6, 2023
- DerbyDoug18 contributionsA Fascinating and Historical FortIt can be a tiring 5-hour round trip by ferry to the Dry Tortugas National Park, but it's well worth the effort. The tour is so enlightening — 16 million bricks to build Fort Jefferson! The sea planes are an option if you can afford them.Visited January 2023Written February 9, 2023
- lifeisforlearningWashington DC, District of Columbia318 contributionsNation's Most Isolated National ParkRuins of a disused, never-completed huge fort to defend the Gulf of Mexico with an interesting history. 70 miles west of Key West, you must take a seaplane (fun!) or a ferry to get there. You can swim or snorkel, and tour the exhibits and the fort. You must bring your own water and snacks - none available on the island. There are a couple of toilets and changing rooms but no running water at all. Please respect the pristine environment and pack out all your trash.Visited February 2023Written February 16, 2023

Too bad the expense of the ferry is getting to be so astronomical that it is getting to be cost prohibitive.Visited February 2023Written February 21, 2023

Where to check in-by the catamaran in a building on 2nd floor. Of note -there are option days. If seas are rough, you can opt to not go with full refund. This review is mainly with checkin in customer service. It’s pretty terrible. There’s no signs to tell you what to do so when I got to the counter to check in, I showed the woman at the desk our confirmation. She looked exasperated and pissed. At the same time we were checking in, there was someone talking about boarding process so I could barely hear the checkin lady (dark hair, short hair). She could barely hear me and I could barely hear her and asked her to repeat a couple of times. She was pissed and upset that she had to do that and looked like she was going to throw her computer at me. Even to the point of snapping her computer shut.
I tried to keep calm since I do work in customer service. But I have not had the degree of awful customer service that I had today. We came to key west to try to take some time away from demanding careers. Going on this excursion was not cheap but to be treated with such disdain is really unbelievable. Maybe someone was having a bad day, but do consider that this still a service we pay for and there is no need to subject customers to this.
Perhaps a sign or a rolling screen that tells you you do not need to show the confirmation to the desk person -all they need is last name. As well as if there an option day.
What a terrible start to the day.

20 to 30 mph winds and mid to high 60s forecast for the day of our reservation. Called at 7am to ask about conditions and recommendations since they are the experts and got a very rude response. To my question about conditions I got “either you go or you don’t, we are still going”. With that response I knew I just lost 360 dollars so I cancelled. He said “ok I’ll cancel your reservation”. I thought maybe there would be a Hail Mary chance for a refund but all I received was a blunt “no”. I feel I made the right decision after seeing 12ft seas. That would cripple my wife for two days at least due to motion sickness. This was one of her bucket list items for our trip to Key West. She can handle choppy seas but nothing like what we saw in the forecast the morning of departure. We plan on making another attempt in the future but via seaplane. We will not book the ferry due to the lack of customer service. Our lesson, read the reviews carefully and take note of the bad ones. Heed the cancellation policy and don’t expect any consideration from the vendor due to weather or conditions. Also don’t cause yourself anguish by thinking you can make the boat trip. Sea sickness is no joke. Be sure you can handle rough conditions. Cancel early if you have any doubts.

Took the Yankee Freedom ferry. Crew was nice and knowledgeable. Breakfast provided was a plain bagel with cream cheese and coffee/juice. Lunch was Jimmy Johns subs, chips included in ticket price. The boat ride takes about 2.5hr each way. There is alcohol available and snacks on the way back (not free). Boat ride was a little rough on the way there with choppy seas, but they do sell dramamine on the boat if you need it. The fort was awesome and definitely worth the trip, truly a one of a kind experience. Conditions for snorkeling were not great that day but still saw many fish and some coral just walking along the moat and looking down. Only complaint is that you don't get much time to explore the fort before having to return, but this time limit is decided by the park service, not the crew. Took the 20min tour of the fort and then tried snorkeling. Would not recommend taking the 1 hour tour if you intend to snorkel or you will run out of time. Only thing I wish I was told in advance was that you must keep all personal belongings with you and can't have anything on the boat once you get off.... Meaning I got to carry a heavy bag of snorkel gear and fins all over the fort. Many people seemed unaware of this rule and had brought large bags.... Not fun. They do offer snorkel gear rental but in the times of Covid I preferred to use my own equipment.

The only company that operates a ferry to the main attraction in this area, The Dry Tortugas National Park, is horribly mis/managed. We have been attempting to book for New Years Eve since early April and although they advise in the website to book 8+ months in advance they disallow you from utilizing the online reservation system and advise that you contact to make reservations. When you call the phone number listed, you only receive a voicemail that stated to call another number that advises to call the number that you are already calling. I have attempted to contact them via the email on their website and received an email that it is not an active email address. I then contact the Key West Attractions and they blamed COVID-19 and technology and stated that she forwarded our concerns to the manager. And after two days I sent an email and no response. It has now been three days and no response. We can not move forward with the one company that allows you to take your kayaks on the ferry until we show a receipt indicating that we made a reservation. And if you are looking for simply a ferry ride, you are out of luck as whether you need the additional services or not, you are charged for food, drinks, and snorkel gear which serves to make this national park inaccessible to many, which is typically not the case with national parks as they typically make entry accessible to all.
For a town that is driven by tourism, it is blatantly obvious by the lack of assistance that they are not wanting to welcome back tourists.
Whoever in the National Parks Service decided to partner with this company to provide access made a massive mistake.

This trip requires a catamaran ferry ride of two hours each way (separate review) or a seaplane (quicker but more costly)! Fort Jefferson is a day trip all by itself much less trying to cram in snorkeling! The guided tour is excellent but does take up a chunk of the limited time you are allowed to spend on the Key. Camping is allowed but has to be arranged in advance and it is only in a specified area. Overall it was definitely worth the time and money. Make sure you book in advance and at this time masks are required on the ferry, in the shop and on the tour. The gift shop is small and strictly limits the number of people, so there is a line. The time crunch and small gift shop are why 4 stars and not 5!

While visiting Key West we did a Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park as well as Fort Jefferson and it was Awesome! Travel options to and from are by Private Boat, Sea Plane or Yankee Freedom Ferry. Make sure you check the Dry Tortugas National Park website for information. Self guided or guided tours of Fort Jefferson are available and I highly recommend. Swimming and snorkeling is available. Reservations are required and I highly recommend you make them far in advance. A great trip.

This was WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!!
The website for the park and for the Yankee Freedom Ferry details exactly the itinerary, what to expect, what the price of the ferry provides, and what to bring. You can tour the fort, snorkel both beaches, fish and eat lunch within the time allotted….perhaps not as long as you would like, but enough to give you a representative sampling of the island. In addition to the information on the websites, I’ll add the following:
1. Fully charge electronic devices and/or bring a portable recharging source.
2. Bring cards and/or portable games to eat away some of the 2 hour drive to and fro.
3. If you have your own transportation, arrange for a taxi or Uber. It will be cheaper than the $40 parking fee.
4. Do not park in the reserved residential parking spaces.
5. Fishing is allowed, so bring your fishing gear.
6. Whatever you bring with you you will have to carry it with throughout your time on the island. Unattended bags are not allowed on the ferry, nor are there storage facilities on the island.
7. There is no internet connectivity on the island.
8. Camping is allowed. See the website for details.
The staff of the Freedom Yankee were customer centered and did everything in their span of control to make the trip enjoyable. Thomas made powerful rum runners and strawberry daiquiris!!!!! And Carrie was an enthusiastic and passionate tour guide who really brought the fort to life.

First I have to say it was not the trip to take if you are covid conscientious. It is not 5 hours on the ferry it is closer to 7 when you add in boarding twice and such. The only outdoor seating up top, no canopy, and if that is full, which it was, they tried to insist inside. That was not happening, no one is wearing masks, they are all eating or drinking, even sleeping with no masks, they did not open any windows for air circulation. So I became the person who refused to sit inside. 5 or 7 hours in the sun, plus 4 when you get there is way too much sun, and I have never lived north of Orlando.
I do live in Florida, snorkel and dive, so snorkeling is so much better elsewhere, I knew that was going to be true, so can't fault that. I travel a lot and maybe have toured too many forts, although it is the biggest and most impressive i have ever seen, it is a fort. It is awe inspiring to think anyone would even imagine building it. Kind of like visiting Machu Picchu, another ruin yes, but huge and why there.
I have been waiting more than 30years to take this trip, couldn't afford it with 4 kids, turns out that is just as well, do not think it is a great trip for kids, boat ride too long, too much history, for an hour of beach time.
Glad I did it, might have been better if no covid, or they had a place to sit outside in the shade on the boat, or opened a window inside.

My family of 5 plus my parents' (ages ranging from 13 yrs - 78 yrs old) took a half day tip to the dry tortugas nationa park. The beaches are fine and it was interesting to walk around the fort and read all the history. We brought our snorkling gear (we are all scuba divers) to do some snorkling off one of the beaches. We actually saw a decent amount of wild life. There are no services here. No bathrooms, food, beverage etc. You will need to pack everything with you that you would want for your time there. They did have bathrooms on the ferry that was docked there. Not sure what you would do if the ferry was not docked? I would say the park itself is ordinary. We actually booked a sea plane adventure and this was the destination (The actual sea plane ride to the park was awesome - I definately recommend). I am not sure I would recommend the park itself.

Hello, I would very much love to know how to find a pilot to Dry Tortugas? I'm thinking of taking my 80 year old Dad and maybe do some snorkeling. Know the boat ride there would be too long. Wondering if there is better snorkeling in the Keys as some folks gave bad reviews for snorkeling at Dry Tortugas.

If you want to take a plane your only choice is Key West Seaplane Adventures. A bit pricey but we're glad we did this for the time savings and experience of landing/taking off on the water.

I plan to take the ferry day tour to Dry Tortugas. For someone who can't swim, how much fun will I miss out? Anyone know if the tour provide life vest along with snorkeling gears? Maybe I can try snorkel in shallow waters.

The tour company does provide snorkeling gear and I believe you need to reserve it so they can have it prepared for you. But if you don’t swim or haven’t snorkeled before I’d suggest just enjoying the walk through the fort (there isn’t enough time to walk the whole thing) , watch the birds in the sanctuary right on the island and bring a towel to sit on the beach. Don’t waste your time on something new and dragging the equipment around for this trip. Just enjoy the flight!

I do recommend sea sickness prevention. They sell pills at the harbor for $1.
When we were there in November, masks were worn on the ferry.

We will be camping in April 2022 for 3 nights. We were there back in the 90’s and remembered seeing fishermen coming to camp to trade there fish for liquor. Has anyone who has camped there recently know if this is still happening?!
Also how are campers boiling water, since we are limited to self lite charcoal or sterno?
Does the ferry provide tubs to store food and gear in?!
Thank you Tonya

We came on the ferry in July, and I don't think they provided storage. We didn't see any fishermen or trading of supplies on the beach.
Hola, saben si hay depronto oportunidades laborales en este lugar? podrian compartirme? gracias!
Do I have to book in advance? They are already booked up for all of next month? I don’t want to camp just site see and dive? Can I just go? I don’t want to waste my time getting up extra early to get turned back around??

don't know if I would take the ferry even if it was sailing on glassy seas - going by float plane you can have 6 hours at the Tortugas and the diving/snorleling is beyond belief - we went in early April and made reservations in February - well worth the extra expense - going early you get 2 hours without stumbling over tons of ferry folks too

It depends on how you get there I think. If you take the ferry, I don’t think you can bring dogs. If you take your own boat then you could bring your dog but dogs are not allowed in the fort. You can only bring dogs onto the island.
