About
The Studios of Key West was founded with the vision of bringing world class artists to the island and promoting Key West artists. Their landmark Art Deco building is located just steps off Duval Street, and is the Key West attraction you don’t want to miss if you’re looking to connect with the creative spirit of the island. With monthly rotating exhibitions, a stage for concerts and theater productions, and a rooftop happy hour bar with the best view in town, there's something for everyone.

Had the joy of being in residence at the Studios for a month. They have fantastic exhibitions, live music, and offer an array of brief to longer classes in the arts. Even better, Books n Books (a book lover's dream store) is part of their complex on the corner, Interested in the arts in Key West? Check this place out

We saw the play Anna in the Tropics at the Studios of Key West and were very impressed with the theatre, the staging, and most importantly, the players. This was an excellent play that related to the past history of Key West and was highly professional. The Studios of Key West was a great place to see a performance. My only complaint was that the elevator was no operational, and people with handicaps actually had to be assisted up the stairs to the theatre. An operational elevator is important!

We bought tickets to a folk concert at The Studios and were told that on Mondays and Tuesdays, its rooftop bar is open for sunset viewing. We arrived at the rooftop bar about 5:30. It is lovely and had live music. A number of people were there, mostly locals, and we enjoyed our conversations. There is a view of much of Key West. You can't actually see the sunset but the sky was lovely. It was a very pleasant cocktail hour.

The Studios of Key West is the contemporary cultural hub of Key West. Everything you want is here: Artist studios, exhibitions, theatre and book store. If you want to understand the cultural vitality unique to Key West, do not miss this inspiring arts centre. A not-so-hidden gem, housed in a historic art deco building, redone to international high standards.

I am a live theatre junkie and I was able to catch the new play, THE PICKPOCKET'S DAUGHTER. Both the playwright and the director were in the audience when I saw the show. The play was a biography of a part of the playwright's mother's life. The acting in the show was phenomenal and there were many laughs and heartfelt moments. I was mesmerized by the performances and incredible ensemble. I can't wait to visit again and see something else. The space is incredible and you can visit the art gallery with a cocktail while waiting to enter the house. I'm told there is a balcony at the top but I didn't see that.

We visit here on our first night to attend "Hugh's View". What a hidden gem. The roof top with a bar was a great way to start our visit to Key West. We met a local woman who was happy that we were supporting a local event and shared some stories of KW with us. My wife loved the book store.

With all these wonderful reviews and being great supporters and participants in the arts, we were hugely disappointed in our interaction with an artist setting up a show in this venue. After a pleasant walk from our hotel to specifically see this highly rated KW attraction, we found the front door locked with a paper sign referring pick ups to the back door. Although we were not picking anything up but it being the middle of a Saturday, we thought we could get some information on visiting hours. We went to the back door and heard some voices setting up what seemed to be an art show. What ensued was a voice encounter that was one of the rudest we have had. "What do you want?" "Just wanted to find out your visiting hours?" Go to the front door!" There is no sign there and it is locked." "Then it's closed! Don't try sneaking your way in!"
What is difficult to understand is how an artist can expect to draw supporters/patrons/clients to see their work with such an uninviting, poor attitude . What has happened to simple manners, a willingness to help a stranger looking for directions to view yours and other artists' work, to potentially purchase your work, to spread the word of how wonderful your work is....it seems illogical to cut off these possibilities with a few poor manners. What a loss for us and for them! I hope you have better luck with your visit. Maybe look for the hours of operation before you go.

Dear Visitor, I want to offer a very sincere apology for the treatment you received when trying to visit us. To my knowledge, have never had an incident like this before. The gallery was closed that day, due to the fact that a camera crew from PBS was filming an interview with an artist inside. That should have been more clearly posted, and in fact, the back door, which should have been locked, was mistakenly left unlocked. The person who shouted out to you was an artist who is associated with The Studios, but who is not a staff member or volunteer of The Studios (and who does not represent TSKW). Again, I do apologize. We love our visitors, and I hope if you ever are in Key West again, you'll give us another chance. Best regards, Elena

At first the Studios of Key West seems to be a friendly, open concept, all "are welcome attraction" to Key West. Enjoy the oddity of the surrounding and the wonderful painted van.
BEWARE if you are an artist who is interested in becoming a welcomed fellow creative soul. This studio does not have any room for new ventures for outsider and is very protective of its $$ patrons and local artists who make income from this group.
I made an appointment for a teaching position in a subject matter which local citizen's could get involved for a reasonable fee. The experience was a disaster, the director of programing rude, the studio's director was non committal and after asking for honest advise from a local artist Pam Hobbs in the subject, I felt like I was run out of town on a rail by the group.
Not returning an email- but assuming intent instead, really led to a sour experience.
So artists beware- enjoy what they offer from afar, but sending in a check for membership- this is not an art association you want to belong to! The negative energy is not comfortable in our sensitive make up.

I was an artist in residence at the Studios of Key West in May 2011, and it was truly an amazing and wondrous experience. I was able to get more work done in a month than I normally do in a year. The staff is amazing, the housing beautiful, and Key West is warm and welcoming. The arts programming they do year round is incredible. Apply!
