Probably should have known she was bad when she was available on one week's notice for first day of lobster season. There were 12 of us on two boats (the other captain, Billy Rentz, seemed fantastic although at the mercy of Paula's choices). None of us had lobstered before. We got no advice whatsoever from Paula except for "you should have watched youtube videos before you came." Fortunately, a couple of us had watched and explained the gist to the others. No ice, no water, no snacks... all pretty easy to overlook as we had brought some stuff ourselves. Her equipment was terrible-- every mask leaked, the snorkels were from walmart with none of the water purge valves found on even the lowest grade of real snorkels. She let half the boat go with their snorkels on the right side of the mask (the mouthpiece is angled to breathe from left so you don't choke water, the captain of the other boat informed us over halfway in after he noticed us constantly coming up choking). Her tickle sticks were just a straight piece of plastic-- no little bend at the end like the real ones. Among the 12 of us, we caught one keeper. A $1,400 lobster. We probably caught 40 undersized ones, so it wasn't a skill problem. Back at the dock, we saw other captains cleaning their hauls of big ones. Paula had no inclination to try to find the right depth or locations, and was content to anchor and watch us swim around in futility. But all of this wouldn't have been enough to spark me writing a negative review. She's just a bad person. It was four hours of mean, degrading remarks. No helpfulness on technique. No color on the area, captaining, or anything. Some quick examples from memory: I asked where the life jackets were. She said I wouldn't need them. I asked if there were barnacles or spiny coral and whether I should wear a shirt down. She said "I don't give medical advice". I asked whether most of her clients went with or without shirts. She replied "yes". We asked whether we were on the gulf side or the Atlantic side. She replied "it's all ocean." When one of our folks asked whether she could come in and show us what we were supposed to be doing, she replied "you think you can operate this boat? You think you could even start the engines without me?" This went on for four hours! I thought at some point she would run out of mean-steam, but alas, that was not the case. It was so bad that one of the wives who planned to just sunbathe all morning actually got in the water just to get away from her. I literally can't believe there are other positive comments. This captain is really, really horrible.

We booked a 1/2 day charter with Capt Paula from our home in NY prior to arriving in Key West. She was quick to answer emails and provided us with all the information we needed. A day before our scheduled excursion, she called to confirm our plans and go over anything we would need to bring, or what she could supply for us. Capt Paula was happy to accommodate our dog for this trip, and told us many stories about her beloved heeler girls (who didn't come for the ride that day). Capt Paula took us out away from the hustle and bustle of busy Key West charter sites, to the quiet, shallow flats for some snorkeling time. We were able to see plenty of fish, crabs and lobsters, all in 4-6 feet of clear, calm water. The best part of our charter was the isolated, sandy beach island she took us to. The water was as clear and turquoise blue as any poster picture, and her boat pulled right up to the beach for us to hop out. We meandered the quiet beauty, taking in the sights and the natural sea life, pelicans, barracudas and a few other little creatures. My girls loved being able to run around in the sand and swim out in the calm water! As anyone in KW can tell you, a beautiful sandy beach (not rock and coral) is hard to come by in the keys! Overall, our charter with Capt Paula was more like spending a leisurely day visit with an old friend, and we couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more! If we are ever lucky enough to come back to KW, we would surely look to book another charter with Capt Paula and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a laid back escape on the water!

I booked with Captain Paula, specifically because she was pet friendly. We had a fantastic day. We didn't go fishing, but opted for snorkeling. Absolutely wonderful time, and would use again.

Somehow we thought we had booked a deep sea half day but ended up with light tackle. It wasn't as expected ( visions of pulling in game fish quickly evaporated) but we had a terrific day learning to fish. Cap'n Paula was perfect for us - teaching all day . Had we started the day knowing what we knew at the three hour mark we would have caught way more fish! Cap'n Paula politely shamed me into unhooking my own fish which I had declared as off limits:) My teenaged boys enjoyed the day and learned a lot. Our dog went along and was accommodated as well ( bring water and a life jacket) We caught enough keepers for a tasty meal of yellow tail snapper. Two sharks were caught and pulled in (and released). No worries for sure with Cap'n Paula.

My partner and I had a great afternoon charter with Capt. Paula - she took us out for some snorkeling, lobster "tickling" and then to a fishing spot with lots of action. She was very amenable to whatever we wanted to do and, as far as we could tell, knows all the places to go. She was laid back, while clearly being very professional and experienced - we felt very safe and in good hands and also enjoyed the conversations! As we passed by all the regular tourist boat tours (which remained quite near to key west) and headed out it was clear we made a great choice. We look forward to our next tour with Capt. Paula - and just hope that next time I can find a lobster big enough to take home!
