The trip there and back gives you breathtaking views that you can’t get from the ferry. Kris was our pilot and he was awesome. Very knowledgeable and friendly. He made the trip even more enjoyable. We had the best time. If you get car sick easily, you may want to take medicine before the plane ride. We didn’t think about that and my husband gets car sick very easily and he was nauseous the entire ride. However, I did not.

Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park is an amazing place without the crowds of most popular national parks. When one takes the seaplane to Fort Jefferson, there is typically some time in which the island is even less crowded because the ferry has either not yet arrived (morning) or has already departed (afternoon). The seaplane flight is an experience in and of itself. Landing on the water at Fort Jefferson and taking off from that water to return to Key West is something to experience. The views of Key West, Fort Jefferson, and everything between are fantastic! Our pilot Chris was friendly and narrated parts of the flight, mixed with some pre-recorded information. The low-altitude flight was gentle and the landing on and take-off from the water were even surprisingly gentle. It was really nice to not have security lines and long waits for this plane ride! Only ten passengers (or fewer) are on board, so it's not crowded and it's quick to get off and on. Although the cost of the seaplane for a half-day excursion is roughly twice the cost of the ferry, there are other considerations. There is limited free parking at Key West International Airport for the seaplane, but only paid parking for the ferry. The flight each direction is approximately 30-40 minutes while the ferry ride is over 2 hours in duration each direction. One does need to pay a national park admission fee or use a national park pass to enter Dry Tortugas and that's payable at the time of checking-in for the seaplane ride. The beaches at Fort Jefferson are beautiful and can be relatively secluded, especially when the ferry boat is not docked. The water is clear, warm, and shallow, perfect for snorkeling. The dock ruins and along the south wall of the fort make for especially interesting snorkeling.

The entire experience was breathtakingly beautiful. From the flight to the islands, the fort itself, and don't forget the snorkeling - you couldn't ask for anything more! Chris had a great disposition - friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. If you can, take the early flight as you'll have the place basically to yourself for the first couple hours. But really just go, you won't regret it!

My fiancé and I recently visited Key West and we knew we had to do a few activities. We decided to try Dry Tortugas after seeing a few breathing taking pictures. We actually ended up going with the Sea Plane because the boat was full and booked but I’m glad we did. I may be wrong but the boat ride I was told is roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes out there and the same on the way back making it 4 1/2 hours on a boat. The sea plane was roughly 30 minutes each way which was so nice. The plane ride out there is very scenic and beautiful. Our pilot was also an amazing tour guide and very knowledgeable. I was a little nervous about the landing and take off in water but it was smoother than a 737 on the runway in my opinion. Dry Tortugas was absolutely breathtaking. The water is so blue and clear. An abundance of fish and coral. The fort is incredible and has an amazing history. Overall amazing experience and would recommend to anyone. It’s worth the money. -Collin and Kaylee

Taking the seaplane out to the Dry Tortugas National Park was easily my husband and is favorite part of our trip! Our pilot, Chris, made sure everyone was safe/comfortable and have us some pretty cool history and plane jams while we took in the 35 min plane ride. we saw so many turtles on the ride out it was hard to keep count! this experience was so worth it, I’ll be bragging about this for a long time! :)
