As a first time tourist visiting Key West for a daytrip, we actually struggled to find a beach in town we could lay out at and enjoy the day. We tried a couple places before landing on this one. The beach is public but beautiful and clean. The day in February we were there it was not crazily packed but people were there. We were able to lay out and enjoy the day. It's a fun beach to explore, both in the ocean and in the surrounding area. There's picnic tables, grassy areas, tennis courts, a pier, public restrooms and changing areas as well as a bar and restaurant. We really enjoyed our beach day here.

The Higgs beach was nice, we walked by several time. For $20 you could rent chairs and an umbrella on a not too crowded beach. There were restrooms.
We made a special trip on Sunday for the arts and food fair they have certain months. It was so much fun. Lots of vendors with a variety of food including fruit, breads, empanadas, bbq, guac, beverages. And a number of nice artisans, we bought several items for our home and gifts. We spent about an hour. There was also live music and shaded areas. Fun!

Want Pickleball in the keys? Higgs is the place. 6 courts , daily play, IMHO, great play! If you feel intimidated by not being good enough, just come by in the aft and practice up, courts clear after 1 or so. Otherwise, just show up, 8-ish is fine. Many 4.0+ in the morning session. About 40 players, but rotations go quickly. 3 open courts to play with different peeps , 4 on-4 off and 3 challenge courts where winners stay to play the next two in cue. Coastal winds are prevalent which makes the game “interesting “

Picturesque beach with some beautiful palm trees and easy access to beach furniture rentals and a restaurant. Public restrooms are close by as well. The real downer is that unless you know the secret lane of beach you will no venture out into the water because of the coral and rocks. Seriously, you can break an ankle it's that bad. There' a pier that you can walk to and down - then enter deeper water from a ladder/platform in order to avoid the rocks. Or, and please keep this a secret, there is about 10-15 ft of safe bottom right next to where the pier meets the beach on the north side of the pier.
rentals are inexpensive as we got two beach chairs and an umbrella for $20.
Parking is somewhat limited but we did not see any big crowds during our November stay so it wasn't an issue. The restaurant on the beach was cool.
There are nicer beaches around (Smathers - just down the road)

We spent about 1.5 hours at Higgs Beach one afternoon specifically to go snorkeling. We had our own snorkeling gear, so we headed right for the pier, walked down to the stairs, and got to it. We snorkeled along the old pier (which is just pilings now). The area closest to the new pier was pretty deep, which meant it was harder to see down to the fish. But, we did see some really big schools of larger fish. As we worked our way along the pilings, it became more shallow and we saw a lot of smaller fish in the grass and tons of conch. We had a good time and the water was a perfect temperature.
Side note: We were able to leave our belongings on the beach and nobody touched them or messed with them. :)

A lovely place to spend the afternoon! For $20.00 you get 2 chairs and an umbrella placed where you like and face the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. There are restrooms on the beach as well as a sand volleyball court. Take a walk on the pier and get some great photos of the beach and shoreline. One of the perks here is that “Salute” Restraunt is located right on the beach so you can have lunch on your bathing suit as long as you put on shirt and shoes. The view is wonderful, as you eat the ocean is right there.

Higgs beach is on the southern coast of KW, some 15 min walk from the southernmost marker. It was a great place for us to relax and cool down in the sea after exploring that part of KW.
Adjacent to the beach are terrific (free to enter) botanical gardens at the Gardens club (see that review).

This beach was OK but we left after about an hour and went to Smathers Beach down the road which was much nicer and more spread out. Not much area for sunning and too crowded although there were many services available and things to see. There is a restaurant which is next door.

This is a beautiful un-crowded place to watch the sunrise in Key West. There are several bench along the pier - but bring something to sit on because they are usually wet from the dew in the morning. Also, several seagulls also came to watch the sunrise with us.

Shallow, rocky and cloudy and seaweed all over this time of year. Not the best beach to go to. One and done here.. p.s. some good snorkeling out along pillars and metal wall past seagrass.
