Fabulous experience/ The beach was easily reachable by local trolley. One had to only walk a few yards to get to the beach. Great sun exposure, and convenient places to get food and drinks... A true marvelous day

One of the nicer beaches with a long walking pier. The water is clear and easy to wade into.plenty of parking. Washrooms in site too. Lovely walk on pier. Not a lot of natural shade.

The keys dont have the picturesque Caribbean beaches, but this one is clean, water is nice and there is a playground for the little ones. Restaurant on site is awesome!

We were worried about the smell, looking at other reviews, but found nothing objectionable. Whew. The beach is pretty small and pretty narrow, positioned north of a fancy hotel and south of the West Martello Tower, a brick ruin surrounded by a lovely garden, Parking...More

There's some sand to lay on. That's about it. lol There're better beaches in Key west. Being here, I'd go to Smathers instead, which we found to be much better. That said, given that all the other reviews mention the stench at Smathers (we didn't...More

With the two newly constructed piers, the area is more appealing. The second isn't quite finished but doesn't impact the beach area. You can now rent lounges and umbrellas which is very convenient for tourists. There is a lovely restaurant within walking distance and best...More

Trip Report Day 2 (11/2/14) (9 Replies)
Time change last night so we got a much needed extra hour of sleep! As usual I woke up earlier than my wife so I snuck out for a run so sweat out some of the last nights impurities. I love early morning runs in KW when the town is so quiet. It was chilly (for KW) that morning - 62 degrees. You could definitely tell the locals (in sweatshirts and jeans) from the tourists (shorts and t-shirts)! Had a wonderful breakfast - the homemade cinnamon rolls are delicious! Then we headed out on our...More

Higgs Beach (17 Replies)
Hubby and I love to snorkel when in the FL Keys. We've done tours (Sebago and Danger Charters), Dry Tortugas and Bahia Honda (off shore as we haven't been able to go on a tour to Looe Key because our scheduled trip for the past 2 years always got cancelled due to strong/high waves). I have been reading about off shore snorkeling from Fort Zachary and Higgs Beach. Where exactly in Fort Zachary? We've tried there several times with no luck. We haven't tried Higgs Beach because we were...More

We didn't go swimming at Higgs, but the water looked beautiful from the beach last weekend. We took a few pictures there and rode by there on the scooter several times. Most times, there were several people in the water.

Higgs Beach (11 Replies)
I just read on the Clothing Optional Guide to the Florida Keys website that there is a section of Higgs Beach where nude sunbathing is allowed. Does anyone know if this is true or am I reading false or outdated information?

Higgs beach is rather small and surrounded by popular resorts and restaurants. I've never seen any naked people there, and I've tried.
