We had the pleasure of enjoying the Islescapes sunset dinner cruise and had a wonderful evening. Captain Alex and first mate Tess are so warm and hospitable while being totally professional AND fun. Thank you for the best time of our wonderful trip to Key West. My wife and I were the only two people on the cruise that evening....spoiled is a word that comes to mind! Alex and Tess left us wanting for nothing. They take pride in their beautiful boat and genuinely want you to have a great time. Captain Alex prepared a wonderful grilled New York Strip steak. It was the perfect highlight to a huge five course meal that left us stuffed. Tess came around regularly to make sure we had plenty to drink and served each course with perfect timing. She snapped pictures of us on the deck and at sunset, yet left us alone to enjoy the romantic cruise, too. We highly recommend this adventure to any and all that travel to Key West. We can't wait to get back to the Island for another wonderful meal and sunset cruise.

We opted to do this, after about 5 years of talking about it. there are a lot of so called "dinner cruises" in key west, but it is usually with 100 of your closest (drunk) friends. not our cup of tea, but this one is a maximum of 6 people (3 couples) and is conducted by captain (and chef) alex and his first (and only) mate Carey. The both are quite amiable. you make your reservations in advance and you also order all of your courses in advance. the dinner is 5 courses, and the food is quite good. it's kind of like going to a good dinner with some friends. you do end up with 4 people you have never associated with for your entire life, but that is kind of interesting too, we had the appetizer which was in our situation cucumber with a mild cheese and some hot pepper jelly. sounds different? it was, but it also was very good. then we had the salads. you have a choice of two and we each picked one. the cesar was great as was the citrus salad with avacado. don't know which one was better, so if you go, order one of each. there is a third course where we had melted goat cheese with potato (i think). my better half says no potato, but i thought there was. this was in a tourene. it was very good. for main course we had the yellow tail. steamed on the grill, it was just right. also had grill roasted vegetables. these were equally as good as the rest of the meal. for desert we had strawberries with white chocolate and key lime...oooooooh. just to die for. alex does all this cooking on a barbecue grill, which is quite interesting. his first mate is great. she provides the ultimate in service. we had a pleasant trip. no sunset the night we went, which would have really topped off the day, but some days are like that. alex does anchor not far from the dock over in a bunch of mangroves. if you get sea sick, you won't with him, this water is like glass. definitely something you should do in key west.

This was the best meal and most memorable of our ten day Key West vacation. It was not your typical cattle boat dinner cruise with crowded decks and mediocre Hors d'oeuvres and booze. Captain Alex only takes 6 guests although he has a 200 ton captains license. YOU ARE PAMPERED. Bring your own cocktails, wine and or beer. Your glass will never go empty. Hannah, his mate, made sure of that. White tablecloths, cloth napkins and clean silverware with each of the five courses. Captain Alex is not only a wonderful host and great chef, his docking skills are unsurpassed. He guided his 38 ft craft into a 40 ft parallel slip. Last but not least, when my wife lost her handbag, with all of our credit cards and most of our cash, I called Captain Alex to reschedule the trip. He replied "come on, I know you'll make it good." One class act!

Our trip went like this. We were greeted by Captain Alex, dirty clothes and unshaven. Upon entering boat we were given no coast guard required safety talk, I have no idea if his boat even has life vests on it. We went out about 5 minutes into the middle of an anchorage full of dilapidated boats and anchored for dinner. The food was nothing much and served on chipped dishes. As soon as sun began to set we went back to dock, well we tried but boat broke down. How is it this business has no bad reviews on Tripadvisor? The two other couples we went with were both disappointed. Want to piss a hundred dollars away per person, take a trip on Islescapes. One last note, both me and my girlfriend were stomach sick next day.....hmmm

Wow, I guess I'm glad I had a haircut! If you had told me you didn't enjoy your trip, I would have refunded your money immediately but when got off of the boat saying it was fine, there isn't much I can do. I will be happy to refund your money now, just call me. I work very hard to make every evening fantastic. Just a couple of things, my clothes are always clean when I start the charter because I change immediately before, they may not stay that way as I am a chef by the grill on a boat! I am sporting the scruffy but neat beard these days, my girlfriend likes it and that is what is important, right? You're right I didn't give your safety speech before we left, I gave it on the way out, I assume you didn't drown? To say we only went out for 5 minutes is just untrue, we don't get out of the harbor in 5 minutes! and we go another couple of miles so it is about a 15-20 minute ride. Yes, I did have a little trouble getting my engine started after the charter. I had a friend come out and jump start us. If had known that spending another 30 minutes watching the sunset and the stars come out was going to upset you so, I would have sent you back with my friend who gave us the jump! I do appreciate your noting that you are the ONLY one out of thousands of guests and 10 years doing this that didn't really enjoy it. As you say...hmmmm.....

I sent capt. Alex an email requesting reservations during our trip to Key West. Based on the reviews, I was super excited about this opportunity. When I didn't hear from him, I reached him by phone. He was pleasant, but was unable to confirm our reservation at that moment. I assumed he was out on his boat....but he assured me that he would call me back to confirm. When I didn't hear from him for 48 hours, I called again and sent a second email with our first, second and even third choices. We avoided making other plans until I heard from him. That was my fault....because we missed out on two other options because I was waiting on him. Never did return any messages. Tough to run a biz that way!

Overall one of the best dinner/activity combinations you could ask for.

Captain Alex was fantastic. Very easy to deal with and a very good cook. The combination of a very private sunset cruise and a great meal makes it very worth the price. Add in the fact that it's BYOB and it becomes a very good overall value.

You might find other sunset cruises for a slightly lower price, but they will be much more crowded, much more impersonal and with a much lower quality of food.

Pros:
- Semi-Private or private dining. On his current boat it is a maximum of six people or you can request a private charter for $500 for up to 6 people. We were fortunate enough that the other couple decided to cancel fearing bad weather (they were wrong the weather was great). Even with 6 people you will get a degree of personal attention you will not get elsewhere.
- Good food. Overall food quality was surprisingly good. They Key Lime infused white chocolate whipped cream was fantastic. You can find better food on the Island but you will also find many much worse.
- Quiet peaceful views.

Cons:
- Slightly difficult for the mobility impaired. There is a ladder on his current boat you will have to climb.
- Limited food selection. Everything we had was very good but the menu is not extensive.
- Very weather dependent and he books up quickly. If you are unfortunate enough to get bad weather on the day you booked, then you are likely to miss out.

Overall a truly amazing experience for a special occasion. I would put this as one of the things to book in advance of your trip to Key West. I tried about a month before to book for our anniversary and he was already completely booked for that day. But you can always take a chance that he has availability.

Finding his dock is a little difficult. If you park at the lot near Schooner Wharf Bar as you are facing toward the ocean you want to go toward the water at the entrance all the way to the left. Then head down toward the water, walk along the wharf to the right and go down the small dock directly in front of Schooner Wharf Bar.

Overall $200 + tax + tip is a very, very reasonable price to pay for the food and overall experience. If you are a wine drinker it actually becomes very cost effective since you can pick up an excellent bottle of wine to bring with you for a fraction of the price you would pay in a restaurant.

it was my friend 60 Birthday we were looking for something special to do we found it. We had been on several sunset cruises and party boats through the years in Key West. Captain Alex called after we reserved and wanted to know what we wanted from the menu. There were six of us and we all shared the appetizers and steaks fish salads all was excellent. It was a great value as you got a seven course meal sunset cruise and the personal service beyond belief. Cary was sure our drinks were never empty and all our wants were meet. We will be doing again next year. Thanks for a great evening and the happiest Birthday ever.

My husband & I heard of Captain Alex through Marrero's Guest Mansion about 3 years ago, booked it, & had one of the best experiences we've ever had. Unfortunately, I didn't write a review.

Well, I'm fixing that now.

Once our travel dates were set with our friends for a return trip to Key West, we booked our hotel & Islescapes immediately. The four of us decided we wanted to do both the snorkeling trip as well as the dinner cruise, so we reserved the whole boat for both.

So happy we did! Captain Alex explained a lot of the history & current happenings in Key West while Carie made sure we were all comfortable. The snorkel cruise was a delight - Captain Alex took us to a beautiful coral reef, where he & Carie made sure that we had the right fit for our snorkeling equipment & educated us on how to get on & off the boat. As an aside, the equipment was the best I've ever used. We had a great time exploring the reef, & then we were whisked off to a quiet, shallower area so that we could swim in the ocean for a bit while Alex & Carie prepared our lunch. (He would've taken us to another site, but we wanted to swim.)

The lunch was incredible. We asked for one of each dish so that we could all share, & enjoyed each one tremendously with some wine that we brought along. We couldn't pick a favorite, but the chicken made a strong showing. Everything was so delicious, & our hosts didn't disappoint. In fact, they exceeded any expectation we might have had.

The next night, we had so much fun! We brought a bottle or three to go along with an incredible meal. Every course. For the main entree, I got the steak, everyone else got the fish, all winners. I hate that the word "amazing" is used so often, because this dinner certainly deserves that description. No detail was overlooked, including clean utensils for every dish, as well as fresh wine glasses for each bottle. You don't get that kind of service in most restaurants, unfortunately.

Obviously, the sunsets in Key West are among the most beautiful, & we had the perfect spot to enjoy it while dolphins & sea turtles made brief appearances. It was a perfect evening (even with the spilled wine), & we will make this a tradition each & every time we return to Key West.

So, book it. You won't be sorry.

Captain Alex's dinner cruise was a highlight of our trip to Key West! Everything from the intimate atmosphere of the boat (only three couples at a time) to the gorgeous sunset was amazing! This dinner cruise was our favorite thing we did in Key West. The food was out of this world amazing, everything from the shrimp appetizer to the fresh strawberries with key lime flavored whipped cream desert was great! The setting made it the most perfect evening, it's an experience like no other! Captain Alex was entertaining as well as informative and he made the evening a night to remember.

Liked the idea. Based on the reviews, we expected phenomenal food. Was ok, not great. A bit more boating would be nice - basically go very close to shore and anchor.

Good night but not sure I'd pay the price again. If you aren't social, think twice. The other 2 couples are right next to you - no real way not to socialize.
