This is the only natural beach in Key West and a must see. We did not go in the water as it was very choppy that day but it's a beautiful beach and we loved it.

This beach is less crowded than Ft. Zachary Taylor beach. We witnessed a private wedding that was adorable, saw the turtle nests and enjoyed the calm beaches without much interruption.

Following previous reviews I need to agree on the poor cleanliness and rough sand at Smathers. May be convenient by car and really a great place for sunset but I‘d try to find a different location for a day on the 🏖

The water temp is only 70 degrees this time of year. You can smell the unpleasant smell of seaweed as you approach the beach.

This is a beautiful white sand beach. My only complaint was there was a lot of seaweed on the shoreline. All that seaweed combined with the heat gave off a bad smell. I was told by a few locals that the seaweed is typically not...More

We visited in July. The beach was quiet and we were provided chairs by the equipment company associated with our hotel. There is plenty of shade. Bring water shoes for the rocks and abundant seaweed. There are bathrooms and volleyball. The beach is very clean....More

It's great for a beach walk and for sunbathing. Sand is soft unlike Fort Zachary's so laying on it is much more comfortable. Once inside it, it's muddy so the if you ever wanted to experience swimming in the offspring of the sea and a...More

We did Ft Taylor, Higgs and here and this is the best. Walkable and nice sand though the water was way too cloudy and seaweed was all along. Only the far points had a smell. Okay for here but way better beaches elsewhere.

Smathers is a very nice beach. It is perfect in the morning, but it would be better if dogs were allowed. I realize that some dog owners fail to comprehend the importance in cleaning up after your pet, but those of that do tend to...More

Bike Rental? (13 Replies)
Husband and I will be staying at the Sheraton Suites by Smathers Beach. We are wondering about transportation on Key West. I thought it would be best to rent bikes through the hotel or a rental company. Would like people's opinion on whether this would be the best way to do our daily ventures into Old Town. Some questions we have about bikes: 1. Are there designated places to park bikes? 2. Are bike locks provided or should we bring our own? 3. Do rental bikes come with lights for the...More

They are plenty of bike racks around old town. Locks have always been provided to us as well as clip on lights. If you enjoy riding then you will be fine, however, it will be quite a long ride to old town. I tend to stick to side streets to avoid traffic. Have a great trip!

Beaches (2 Replies)
I know the beaches aren't the greatest, but I am going to Key West and therefore have to go to one! Can anyone tell me info on these choices? I really don't want to drive anywhere, just walk to the beach from my hotel (Marriot(: FORT ZACHARY TAYLOR - I heard nice, but too rocky. SOUTH BEACH DOG BEACH - rocky, too. If you're staying at either Courtyard by Marriott or Marriott Beachside Resort, both are on Roosevelt Blvd. and none of these beaches are really within walking distance of your hotel. You might want to check and see if your hotel offers a shuttle that would take you to the beach. Doesn't the Beachside Resort have a small private beach?
Are cabs easy to get/call? (2 Replies)
I will be visiting Key west for the first time this fall and am wondering how easy it is to get a cab there. I am surprising my hubby with a renewal of our vows at Smathers beach, and am trying to set a time to be there. The earlier the better, but don't know how easy it is to catch a cab and how much time I should allow to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We will be staying at Southnmost on the beach. Thanks!

Cabs are a plenty. No problem. Ask your hotel to call one for you. If you're hanging around one of the busier areas when you need one - wave - I've never had a problem hailing one when I needed one here.
