A tradition for us is to go to Mallory Square to view the beautiful Key West sunset at least once during our time there.
Go at least an hour (or more) to view and enjoy the performers/vendors before finding a good seat for viewing. This location get crazy busy closer to sunset every night of the week!!!!!!!

I visited Mallory Square with my family during our recent trip to the Keys. We spent the hour before the sunset in the square. It was quite busy and there were a lot of people in the Square. It gave the place a lot of energy. There are also vendors and performers in the square in the hour or so before sunset. Do be aware that after the sunset the traffic leaving Key West gets pretty heavy.
The sunset was really pretty. There were lots of colors and the sail boats on the horizon really added to the view. We enjoyed watching the sunset in Mallory Square.

In addition to being a site to watch a beautiful sunset this location gives an insight to visitors on typical life in Key West. Due to its popularity the number of tourists far outweigh the local population.

We had read so much about the activities at Mallory Square celebrating the sunset. Our experience was completely different than everything we read. It was slow and tame with not much going on. We were there in September, and we learned this is the slow month for the Keys before the rush of visitors fleeing the winter cold. This could be why there wasn’t much happening here. It seemed to us the attendance was made up completely of well-behaved tourists. The only raunchy activity came from the street performers, who in our opinion, need to clean up their mouths and acts. It was disappointing because it didn’t seem like a party or festival at all. It seems like a painful try at something that used to be a big deal but is not anymore.
We were still glad we went and can cross it off our list of Key West events.

If it is hot the cement is hot to sit on and after all day in the sun makes it hard to sit on hot cement. Better sunsets at Ft. Zachary and there are places to sit. Fee entertainment is good, there was performer that was racially degrading so we refused to listen to his sarcasm. Fun to do.

Mallory Square is the perfect place to spend an evening - see the sunset, watch the various street performers, shop, etc. The street performers were great - entertaining, funny, engaging with the crowd, etc. What was a surprise for me (since the last time I had visited), was the the street performers not only asked for tips (which I would expect), but they asked for certain amounts of money ($20+). It's a great show, and we tipped...but I definitely didn't expect them to ask each person to give them $20+ for a tip.

This is a fun place to go at night . My teen daughters are sort of past the age of being amused by the performers . We came years ago and I remember it being bigger and better then it was during our stay this time.
On our 2nd night stay my teens wanted to get sunset selfies for their social media accounts . We scouted the right spot and sat for an 1 and 1/2 hours to get the right sunset shot only to have rude people literally sit directly infront of us and block our view . People were not social distancing. Infact they practically invade your personal space to get a pic. Grrrrr.

Mallory Square is a large open area on the west side of Key West, just south of Duval Street. The square offers a good view to the west. There are several shops around the square.
Mallory Square is known for the street performance acts that generally take place around sunset, however there wasn't much going on there at the time of our visit. It think this may have had more to do with the date of our visit (December 2020) than anything else.
I'd still recommend checking out Mallory Square if visiting Key West.

Sunset is the time to go, everyone will tell you that, and it is true. It is beautiful and people watching is fun. There are street performers and vendors and a basic air of a street fair every night. Enjoying a rum drink while the sun goes down is part of the spirit of Key West.

We went to Mallory Square several nights to catch some local performers and to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. There was always something happening in the square, on the water and in the sky. The square gave us one of Key West’s many vibrant experiences. One should go there at least for one sunset.

There really isn't free parking anywhere in the downtown area. However there is plenty of paid parking at Mallory Square in the city's parking lot.

How active is Mallory Square and Key West in general on a Sunday?

During the day, the shops and restaurants are open and it's nice to walk around. It's got people but not crowded. You may have to wait in line to get your photo taken at the southernmost point, but that's literally a few minutes.
At night I hear it can get crazy, but we avoided that. During the day...no problem for families.
