One hour south of Miami the Pennecamp park in Key Largo offers a lot.
Paid entrance to the park itself ( $10 for 4)
bring your gear or rent there( $ 2-3 per indivual gear),
small shop with snack, sandwich and souvenir. or bring your own.
You can use the small beach or enjoy a 21/2 or 5 hours snorkeling tour. Kayak in the Mangrove and more.
we did the 2/12 hour tour on a thursday morning, 10.30. 30 people on board , great captain and mat.
30 minutes ride to the home of the underwater statue of Jesus...Christ of the Deep. so much to see it was wonderful, my kids could not get enough, perrot fish, barracouda, sting ray and more.
I got sea sick and a few more on the boat..

One of best snorkeling sites in US, don't miss opportunity. Just a short boat ride off shore. Very shallow waters at some points and many charters in the area. Not recommended for young children.

I don't think there is 25 feet of water but there is much to see. I had a picture of myself with the 15 foot Christ statute but no idea where it is now. You can expect to see sting rays and a lot of very colorful fish. I had scuba, but most of it is shallow enough for snorkelers to see everything.

The boat was overloaded for the size of the viewing area. This reef had little color and the class and light and depth showed little. The boat moved too fast to focus. 45 min each way and maybe 20 min of reef viewing.

We were traveling to Key West and we stopped in to see the home of the Undersea Lodge. We already knew you could not get a reservation on short notice, so it was only a sight seeing excursion. We walked into the small gift shop and attempted to ask some questions and the woman was so overtly rude it bordered on hostile. Shocking does not even describe it. We just turned around and left. I'm not sure if we breathed to much oxygen or what. But the bizarre interlude was disturbing at best and if she is who my life was depending on to save me in an underwater hotel, I think I'd pass!

Two hour trip: 45' out, 45' back, 30' moving slowly over the coral beds. Nice boat ride with pleasant and knowledgeable staff. Smooth start, but when offshore the announced "1' chop" turned out to be 3' waves. About 20-30% experienced some seasickness.
When we arrived at the viewing area, guide suggested the passengers "all get friendly and pleasant". Reason was there was comfortably room for 50 or 60 to view and she announced there were over 100 on board. It wasn't pretty. On top of that, the air conditioning failed and I started to drip sweat on the person sitting on the floor in front of me. The guide suggested the a/c didn't have capacity to handle the crowd. This was confirmed when I counted the seats available in the viewing area---less than 60. The trip would have also been more pleasant if seats were available on the two upper decks. Zero seats were available, but about 10 people could sit on two lockers

Snorkeled on the reef and saw many big fish like barracuda. A huge sea turtle swam by as well as a large reef shark...it was like being in a great big aquarium!

Did the 2.5 hour snorkel trip - it was great! Lots of beautiful fish and coral, and saw a huge spotted rays and some sharks (a little too close for comfort for me, but they were friendly). Definitely recommend this!
