Before heading to Key Biscayne on vacation with my family, I did a lot of research to find the best offshore captain in the area. I landed on L&H sportfishing and booked three trips a couple of months in advance of our arrival. The first two were half days with my wife and three young children (11,9,7). The captain and crew were absolutely fantastic. We caught a huge variety of species and brought home enough for a few meals each time. The action was pretty much non-stop, and the kids had a blast! Between these two trips, we even caught a couple of MASSIVE sharks which the kids thought was the absolute coolest thing ever--all of them were able to participate reeling them in. For the last trip, I went on a full day with my father-in-law and two friends. I had never caught a sailfish before, and Captain Jimmy vowed to do his best to make it happen. We traveled a bit further out this time and proceeded to kite fish as the conditions were optimal. This is a method of fishing that I have never done before, but it was super cool and impressive how the crew managed all of the lines throughout the trip. Almost immediately, we were in the action. We hooked a few big kingfish and bonita to start off. Within an hour, we hooked up with something big but weren't exactly sure what it was. A few minutes later, a sailfish came launching out of the water. I eventually landed the fish (check off the bucket list!). A short while after, we hooked another sailfish and another not long after that! We hooked up with three mahi (one of which was a huge bull) at once at one point during the day, and finished up with me catching ANOTHER sailfish with plenty of other action in between. Let's just say that the four of us had pretty sore arms at the end of the day! A HUGE thank you to Capt. Jimmy, his sons James and Chris, and to Chris as well for making these trips truly special. You guys certainly work your butts off and work hard to make sure that your customers are comfortable and are having a great time! I have been on a lot of fishing charters in my life, and you guys are by far the best! Trust me, I will be back!

We had a great time fishing, but when we got back we had the situation were they said that, they would keep half of the biggest fish we caught. Instead we got rip off as they kept more than half of the whole trip catches and on top of that they gave us a big additude. We paid for the trip and gave a 300 dollar tip and on top of that they were not happy. We believe that we really got rip off on our catch.

These guys are extremely impressive. I’ve been on several charters over the years and none even came close to the level of expertise this crew showed. When we came across a school of Mahi these guys didn’t miss once. We went out with Adam, Troy, Chris, and Jimmy’s son Chris and they were all fantastic. Incredibly knowledgeable and hard working. Jimmy’s son, who is only about 10 years old, knew more about fishing at his age than I think I’ll ever know, and he’ll make a heck of a captain some day. Very much looking forward to coming back in the spring!!

My wife booked an all-day fishing charter with L &H as a birthday gift that the entire family could enjoy. We are life-long Florida residents and have grown up in and around the water. We recently purchased a center console boat about 1.5 years ago and have expanded our fishing interest from fresh water to now include saltwater. As we learn the ropes of saltwater fishing my wife had the great idea to take this charter and see how the professionals fish. After my wife and 11-year old son and 17-year old daughter did some research they landed on trying our charter experience with L & H. These guys are very busy and my wife had to book several weeks out and landed on a Sunday all-day Charter. We arrived at the Marina at 6:40am and was immediately greeted by assistant First Mate Chris who unloaded our cooler and some personal bags out of the car and onto the boat. Once on board we met Captain Andy and First Mate Troy. We felt very welcomed by the entire crew. The marina is in excellent condition and was easy to get to and was in a safe area. We were pulling away from the dock by 7am. We made a quick stop offshore to fish for bait with no success. A short drive further offshore and we tried a second spot and loaded the boat with small bait fish. I think the kids enjoyed working the sabiki bait rigs as much as landing a large bull dolphin! It was clear the crew knew where the fish were at. After filling the live bait well we were off to the fishing grounds. After about 30-40 mins we were in about 1,200 feet of water and started getting our lines wet. During the drive out Troy and Chris were in constant motion rigging ballyhoo, preparing rods/reels and deploying outriggers. They then settled in with binoculars scanning the horizon for the signs they have learned could mean fish are nearby. All through the morning we hit a number of spots such as a seaweed patch or surface disturbance of tiny bait fish that brought seabirds way out to sea. As we hit these spots the teaser outrigger lines would trigger a fish bite and Troy and Chris would explode into action to set a line on a fish or deploy a live bait rig. For the first half of the day we hit a number of spots and had put 6 mahi on ice. For the six we caught we probably threw back 15-18 shorts (not legal as mahi must be a minimum length). Mid-day slowed down and we used the quiet lull to eat an lunch. Troy and Chris, being in constant motion, used the mid-day to reload on ballyhoo rigs and change up some of the teaser rigs. Seriously, these guys never stopped moving the whole charter. Then mid afternoon we hit a large seaweed patch on both side of the boat. Both teaser lines on the outriggers triggered as did the long line. Captain Andy slowed the boat and yelled "BIGS EVERYWHERE GET EVERY LINE IN THE WATER". We had literally hit a fishing gold-mine and found a mahi school with legal size-plus fish. Troy and Chris literally exploded into action and within minutes me, my wife, and both kids had a fishing pole in our hand with a nice mahi on the hook! With four poles in the water reeling in fish Troy and Chris had rigged standby poles with live bait. We would land a mahi and throw a newly baited line out immediately. As a family we continued this process for about 20-30 minutes and had landed about 25 mahi including 4 really good sized bulls that really put up a fight. Full disclosure, my wife landed the biggest catch of the day. If there was ever a scenario that I have lived through that could be described as "... all hell breaking loose"... this was it. But, the controlled manner this unfolded and the level of coordination between Captain Andy, Troy and Chris was incredible and speaks to the professional caliber of this crew. The school of mahi dispersed and we could stop and breath and cooled off in the salon A/C while Troy and Chris cleaned up the carnage. You should be aware, offshore fishing can be very messy and bloody as sometimes the large mahi needed to be gaffed to get them on board. Given the volume of fish in such a short period really made a mess on the deck. Troy and Chris washed our shoes and we stepped into the salon. They then cleaned and scrubbed the deck spotless so that when we stepped back out it looked like the boat we stepped onto at the dock. Keep in mind this is late August in south Florida in the middle of the afternoon. To say it is hot and scorching even on a 46' boat is an understatement. Captain Andy, Troy and Chris worked all day without a break in these conditions and never once let is show in the way they interacted with me and my entire family. Troy and Chris then re-rigged all the lines and we trolled for really large fish on the return. We did not get any bites and we were fine with that as we enjoyed the ride back into the marina. Lessons leaned: - Wear cool clothing, hats and sun block - Wear shoes and clothes you don't mind getting wet or bloody - If you can afford it, take the all day charter to give you max time to find the fish - Drink plenty of water all-day - If you don't plan on eating a lot of seafood consider giving the crew your half of the catch. Take only what you really want. WE took home only two mahi's worth of filets. - Give the crew a generous tip (greater than 20% of charter cost) as they are professionals and worked their tails off to make this a once in a lifetime trip that my entire family will remember the rest of our lives. Lastly, if ever in south Florida looking for a fishing charter...... you should make L & H your choice. You may catch fish and you may not catch fish. It is clear to me L & H will give you the best shot at finding the fish...........
