My husband and I and my two cousins ( we are all senior citizens) enjoyed a morning of delightful kayaking at the JOC at Riverbend Park. This was our first experience with JOC but had come to the park earlier in the week to experience their walking trails. What a lovely and peaceful and uncrowded environment this is.
Candace, at JOC, helped us out- describing the different kayaks, canoes and helped launch us in the water. Very easy access and a beautiful unhurried paddle in the river. I would highly recommend this activity and center for both inexperienced and experienced kayakers.
Friendly and helpful staff.

Wonderful place for kayakers it’s a 600 acre park and within the park there is Jupiter Outdoor Center. You can go with a guide or just rent a kayak , we went with an excellent guide named Dan who was able to tell us some of the history of the area and point out wildlife including a submerged alligator. It was a real eye-opener ,having kayaked in other areas of Florida , to see cypress trees and , as my nephew put it, feel like you were walking through the woods only you happen to be in a kayak! Definitely try it whether you are experienced or not it’s well worth the effort

We visited JOC in March 2023 and rented kayaks for a 2-hour paddle on the Loxahatchee. An incredible experience. The river meanders through a cypress swamp teeming with wildlife both in and near the river. The scenery is breathtaking and, yes, we shared the river with at least one big ole gator.

I would give this adventure 5 stars instead of 4 were it not for one little thing – JOC rented me a kayak with a hole in the bottom – specifically, on the aft end of the keel.

I discovered this when we reached the turnaround point of our trip, where you can pull the boat out on a wooden platform while you have lunch or whatever. In my case, that should really read “you can pull the boat out on a wooden platform if you have been spending time in the gym lately,” because after an hour of the hollow plastic hull taking on water through the aforementioned hole in the bottom, the little plastic kayak seemed to weigh about 200 pounds. We removed the drain plug and turned it over, and water poured out for about 5 minutes. On the way back upriver there is another rest stop where you portage over a low dam, and we had to drain and dump again there.

When I got back to the start, I pointed this issue out to the JOC staff and, to their credit, they immediately refunded my rental fee without me even asking. And, perhaps I should have left it at that without writing this review. After all, it all ended well and I was never in any mortal danger.

However… a couple of things prompted me to post here.

First, when I asked JOC what they would do to keep anyone else from ending up with a hole in the bottom, they said they would patch the hole. But the hole was not patchable. It had been caused by repeated bottom-scraping that had reduced the thickness of the hull at that point to roughly that of construction paper, and it was surrounded by shreds of old patch tape that also had been scraped off by normal use.

Second, while still on the river, I encountered another kayaker who also was doing the “dump and drain” after discovering a hole in the bottom of his kayak in the same location as mine. This suggested to me that the discovery of holes in the bottom might not be the rarest of occurences.

So if you have the chance, by all means go to Riverbend Park, rent a kayak, and take this beautiful and refreshing trip. But before you cast off, flip the kayak over, look at the aft end, and see if there is a hole in your boat.

Not everyone will have my experience. My review is specific to the location on the Jupiter Inlet (not at Riverbend Park - which I have also been to). First off, my experience was specific to my activity and has more to do with the guy operating the kiosk at the time and less about the overall business. The business is fine - they rent kayaks and paddleboards etc. and there reasonable. That's it. But during a paddleboarding rental in Jupiter I almost lost my life (seriously). I rented a paddleboard with my wife - she opted for a kayak. I told the guy I was new to paddleboarding. He kind of "jested me on" by saying "you have to go this way and that way" along the current. I ended up getting taken by a current and almost sucked under a pier. I was rescued by a guy who heard me screaming for help and pulled me out of the water. I was covered in blood from all of the scratches from the oyster beds on the pier. My wife was in her kayak at the time and he put me in his truck and put our board/kayak in the back and drove us to the Outdoor center on the inlet. When i got there the guy said "at least you got a ride back"!!! He was not sympathetic at all to my situation. He even got on his paddleboard and paddled out to prove it can be done if done correctly. Next thing the paddleboard group tour guide came and said she was going to cancel the tour as the current was too strong. So again, the place is great for what its worth. You rent kayaks and other equipment to access the water. But my experience was horrible. The guy there didn't even offer to give us a refund or offer his apologies. He could care less.

So sorry to hear about your horrific experience! It certainly doesn't sound like a Jupiter Outdoor Center outing! Your review is dated August 2020, but Jupiter Outdoor Center has not had a kiosk open in the inlet area since 2018. You must be referring to a completely different outfitter. Jupiter Outdoor Center would love to provide you with a 5 star experience with an inlet/lighthouse area lesson/tour combo to show you a truly amazing, safe adventure where you can really enjoy the beauty of the area.

This was a fantastic way to end the summer before school begins for the kids. Loved this scenic kayak trip. Just challenging enough on the return trip to make you feel like you’ve exerted yourself but beautiful the entire time. Highly recommend.

Thanks for allowing JOC to complete your summer with an adventure on the Loxahatchee River!

We had a great time kayaking on the river. We saw lots of turtles, two alligators and many interesting birds. Someone else had seen a manatee, but we didn't. Renting the kayaks was easy, rates were reasonalble, and the location is right on the river. The person renting to us was very helpful. This was my 3rd time here and I would come again.

Two hours of kayaking the Loxahatchee on a quiet Monday morning is a very fun, real and almost spiritual way to experience south Florida. For me, it was at Riverbend Park in Jupiter.

But it will be better with a guide. Especially one who is helpful, knowledgeable and personable with a sense of humor and concern for safety.

Our group (three ladies, three men, strangers, friendly, ages 18 to 78) was lucky to be guided by Richard who gave us all of that.

Young and experienced, he engaged each of us and made us comfortable because he himself was so much at ease. He found us a momma gator and her baby and then another two or so year old off by itself. And showed us many of turtle river’s many turtles

The Loxahatchee, of course, is the star. And the kayak itself makes it fun. But the guide can make it better and so much more memorable. For our group, I think, and for me, for sure, Richard did just that.

We loved our trip down the Loxahatchee. We rented two single kayaks and went to the trapper cabin and back, 2 hours down but 4 hours back. The foliage was beautiful and the trees kept us cool. It was fun navigating the high waters and making our way over logs and stumps. We were surprised that we did not seem any wildlife but still enjoyed it.

My big concern, however, is that the personnel did not make effort to honor social distancing. The woman who checked us in was not wearing a mask (we were), and came within a few feet of my husband talking with him. When I suggested that masks would be appropriate in a part of the country where COVID case rate of rise is setting records, she shrugged and said it was not necessary outdoors. Since we are both in our 60's it would have been nice to feel like the company wants to stay open, provide beautiful outdoor opportunities, but do their best to also protect their customers.

Thought we would be kayaking in a calm area on our “mangrove mystery tour” but instead we were in a busy marina area, with considerable boat traffic and noise (and sadly but perhaps unsurprisingly not a single manatee or turtle to be seen). In retrospect maybe the JOC river tour would have been more peaceful / scenic? Our guide was 200+ feet ahead of us most of the trip — there was no paddle or safety instruction or much in the way of explanation about the area, birds, or anything — so it wasn’t much of a “guided tour” at all. I understand that whether one actually sees wildlife or not cannot be controlled, but we still would have been interested to learn something (even in the absence of seeing anything). On a positive note, the kayaks and paddles seemed clean and were in good condition.

Beautiful day on the Loxahatchee River. We were a group of kayakers and one canoe. The staff was so nice and helpful. Even at the dam, one of the employees giving a tour, helped us with our canoe. Very very thankful!!! The water level was low in some areas and I highly recommend wearing water shoes so if you have to get out to walk your kayak/canoe, you can do so with ease. There was plenty of wildlife to view - Gators, Turtles and Multiple Bird Species. Enjoy the serenity!
