About
The Matheson History Museum is located in the former American Legion Hall, built in 1937, and houses temporary exhibitions that explore Florida's history and permanent exhibits that tell the story of Alachua County from the time of the Timucuan tribes to the 20th century. The 1867 Matheson House, one of the three oldest residences in Gainesville, is a blend of classic revival raised cottage architecture and the South Carolina plantation style. The Tison Tool Barn houses the antique tool collection of Gainesville native James Mason Tison, Jr. Directly behind the Museum is Sweetwater Park. The Matheson Library & Archives, located in the historic Gainesville Gospel Tabernacle building across the street from the museum, houses the museum's research library and collections, which include more than 20,000 historic Florida postcards, 1,500 stereograph cards, and myriad maps, photographs, documents, books and artifacts.

I stopped by one afternoon while visiting downtown. The Matheson is not very big, but it had interesting displays of old Gainesville.

A jewel of a history museum in downtown Gainesville

The Matheson is tucked away off University Avenue, a block down from the main library, parking (free) on the side. The curator is friendly and the exhibits are interesting, with an entire air of welcome. The grounds and park behind the museum give a glimpse into the old Florida small town that Gainesville once was.

We came to see the special exhibit on the St. John's River but thoroughly enjoyed the whole museum. A small place but worth the stop.

Excellent Small Museum - Great Florida Native American information
Sep 2016
Free museum; so glad we stopped. Excellent exhibit on medicines through the years as well as a really great general store display to showcase that topic. We stopped in as a talk was happening by the curator on this exhibit. We enjoyed the information on Florida's native American history as well. Well done.

Very Nice Hometown Museum
Apr 2016 • Couples
A small home town museum with some interesting artifacts of the area. Not a flashy museum but things that do much to see the area. No admission fee. Nice for an hour or two visit.

Great piece of history and pretty grounds

Happened on this museum as our B&B was very close. Stopped in at 4 and they closed at 4:30. We were welcomed in and got a brief overview of the museum by the docent. Had some very interesting pieces of Florida history. The Matheson house is on the property as well but wasn't open at the time we were there, would like to go back and see it in the future.

This small museum packs a lot of history. There is an authentic canoe that has been restored. There is also artifacts from a general store with medicine bottle and food containers. A little bit of civil war history and some explorer exhibits. it's worth a stop
