This was a wonderful experience and something completely different i've never seen before! You get to dangle from these enormous branches upside down, sit among the canopy and essentially climb and hoist yourself into the air while harnessed to a beautiful tree. Nothing quite like it!

It was super fun and enjoyable. He did a really great job of explaining everything and taught us about trees as well.

My partner and I received a gift certificate to Canopy Climbers and really enjoyed the experience. Danny is very friendly and knowledgeable and we had a lot of fun climbing with him. Do it, you won't regret it.

My husband and I “attempted” the Canopy Climb. Before going, I expressed some concern to Danny that my husband and I may not be physically fit enough to do this, I mentioned that we were 64 & 55 years old. Danny responded by saying my, “ My father does this and he is 72 years old, you can do it!”

When we met up with Danny the day of the climb, it became clear as he was describing the process, that you are pulling up your own body weight up the tree while sitting in a somewhat awkward position. My husband weighs 210 at 6’1” and I weigh 143 and am 5’4”. My husband started first and had difficulty getting 10’ off the ground; I did not do as well.

My husband walks about 5-6 miles a day and I walk 4-5 miles a day, but we did not have the upper and lower body strength that is needed. I would say this is a mid strength work out; in other words you should be working out several days a week and be able to bring your knees up to your nose continually to get yourself up the tree.

I will finish by saying Danny was knowledgeable about nature and was very informative, he did coach us to keep trying or take a break. If you have ever had any back issues, I would not suggest this as you are twisting you lower back continuously and can not alleviate any stress in the back area easily in that position.

We did NOT ask for any type of refund as I felt I should of asked more direct questions about the process and Danny gave us some great references of other things to do in the area.

I hope this helps others, I have to say our children are very excited to try this when they visit from out of town!

We are so sorry to hear you and your husband did not enjoy your Guided Climb experience with Canopy Climbers as much as you thought you would. There is no need to request a full refund. Happily, we voluntarily refunded your fee in full. Canopy Climbers also invites you and your husband to come climb trees with Canopy Climbers in 2016, free of charge. We remain confident that we can get you both climbing into the treetops, if you’re willing to try again. We also regret that you felt compelled to give Canopy Climbers our first and only non-excellent rating on TripAdvisor. We’ve had over 700 people climb trees with us these 4 years and, to date, have earned 98 straight “excellent” ratings on TripAdvisor from our guests. Every day, we work towards achieving one of my most important goals: to earn all excellent ratings on TripAdvisor. The reason why is because TripAdvisor ratings impact my small business directly and we care deeply about our clients’ experience since they’re spending their hard-earned money to do something fun and unique, like climbing trees. We only wish you had informed us in advance that you have a back problem. While climbing, your husband told us you have a “bad back,” but only after you were 7 feet off the ground. If we knew about your condition in advance, we would have discouraged you from purchasing a Guided Climb and recommended you first consult your doctor before climbing with us. Also, our website clearly states, "When we climb trees, we defy gravity. There is a level of effort involved, and can feel somewhat strenuous, depending on your level of power, weight and fitness. It is an adventure-workout, and that’s why so many people enjoy doing it...” What adds some confusion is that when you filled out our online Registration Forms, days before you climbed with us, you answered the following questions this way for both you and your husband: Question: Do you enjoy strenuous outdoor activities? Answer: Yes Question: Do you have any allergies or a medical condition that may be aggravated by strenuous outdoor activities? Answer: No Question: Do you have any physical limitations or disabilities? Answer: No If you had answered either of the last two questions with a “yes,” the following statement of caution would have immediately popped up for you to read: “Please contact me in advance about your physical abilities and specific needs or requirements. We have extensive experience in getting people of all ages and abilities into the treetops safely and comfortably by using different rope-climbing techniques. Please consult your doctor. If your doctor approves this activity for you, then Canopy Climbers is confident you can climb trees.” We think it stands to reason that the answers you provided gave us no advance indication that our climbing activities would pose a problem for you or your husband. (And yes, I’m happy to confirm that my 71 year-old Dad has climbed trees with me 3 times.) Regarding our rope-climbing system, it is designed with an inherent 2 to 1 mechanical advantage, which means, like a gear on a bike, it significantly reduces the effort of a climber. Climbers don’t actually pull their full body weight up the rope with our system. In fact, a climber ascends by standing up on the rope and pushing down only half of their total body weight, then pushing up the “Magic” knot to capture the advancement. I thought I’d clarify this because people reading your review would almost definitely get the wrong idea about how our tree-climbing system works. Our system is user-friendly and makes climbing vertically surprisingly easy, relative to other ways of climbing on a vertical rope. Over 700 climber-participants of our can vouch for it. On a positive note, you and your husband both ascended high enough to get your first safety knot, which means you are officially tree climbers. And he did a wonderful “Bat Hang” as well, which was good fun. Over the years, I have worked extensively with people with a wide range of abilities, including some people with disabilities, physical and otherwise. I’ve found that how a climbing event turns out really depends on my clients communicating their unique and particular needs with me, in advance. Every day, I work to share the experience of tree climbing, connecting people with trees, nature and each other. As you may remember, the point I emphasize while chatting under the tree before the climb starts is not how high you go or how fast you get there, but your overall experience with learning about trees and connecting with nature and each other. Again, I’m sorry you found your experience lacking. I sincerely hope you and your husband will come back and try it again sometime soon for a complimentary climb. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy Holiday Season, Danny Lyons Owner and Tree Climbing Instructor of Canopy Climbers, LLC

Bored in Gainesville, I always check to see if there are new things to do on TripAdvisor. (I've already been to the Natural History museum and the Butterfly park.) And I must admit, I sort of glossed over Canopy Climbers every time I looked at the list, just because I didn't really understand what "tree climbing" entailed. This activity was way more than the tree climbing we did in the backyard when we were younger--it was closer to rock climbing (with maybe a hint of CrossFit with the rope climbing).

I was very glad that we got to experience it. The adrenaline rush when you are standing on a branch 30 feet high is not easily replicable!

People of all athletic levels can participate and challenge themselves.

Danny and Al were exceptional instructors throughout our climbing adventure. They were very knowledgable guides and helpful with everyone...even our 6 yr old son and 4 yr old daughter loved the climb! It's a great way to enjoy the beauty of nature and get a good work out too!

We had a great time tree climbing with Daniel. We were able to bond as a family and with nature. Daniel was very informative and guided us through a successful climb. We enjoyed the tree hammock and had a picnic in the tree. Definitely a unique experience. My two teenagers were able to climb with ease. I found it a bit of a challenge but did make it with Daniels encouragement and instruction.

We gave a guided climb to our 12-year-old son for Christmas this year and just did the climb yesterday. We climbed the Z tree in Kanapaha Memorial Park, a beautiful old live oak. All three of us enjoyed the experience to the utmost. Danny was all set up when we arrived and immediately got us fitted into our equipment. He explained what everything was, showed us that it was safe and secure, talked about trees and our relationship with trees, explained what we needed to do to treat the Z tree with respect when we climbed and then showed us the ropes, literally. The method he used for climbing was easy to learn and his teaching style worked well for all of us. Two of the three of us think of ourselves as scared of heights and the third definitely has a healthy respect for heights. Nevertheless, we all made it to the tops of our ropes (about 40 feet up in the tree) and two of us hung out in a hammock way up in the canopy and did a couple of upside down bat hangs (our son even did a swinging bat hang). It rained a bit while we were up there, but somehow that only enhanced the experience. It is strange to think of an incredibly peaceful, moving experience that also gets your adrenaline pumping, but that's what this was. We cannot recommend tree climbing with Canopy Climbers highly enough. I hope we'll find a way to get back soon and do it again.

You must take this adventure. Learning to climb trees is not something that is commonly found, so if you're coming to Gainesville, you need to take advantage of being there and do this. Our Family loved it, everyone loved it. My daughter climbs trees wherever we go for fun, so I knew she would really appreciate learning how to climb like a professional with all the equipment and enjoy. I was unsure if everyone would be excited about it. In reality, everyone was excited for this adventure and glad they had this experience. My wife was a little hesitant to climb, being concerned about safety, but after she climbed up once and hung like a bat, she came down, and then went back up again, and was walking around and sitting on the branches and in the hammock. At the top, we climbed up to a five story building height. For us, we arrived, got fitted, and had our orientation. Danny keeps a close eye on the weather, and a thunderstorm was about to roll in, so we had to wait a little over an hour for the rain and lightning to pass. So this adventure is both location and weather dependent. Another reason that if you can you should do it. We had two hammocks mounted for resting in, and took a lot of photos. When we visit Gainesville again, we will see if we can sign up for more detailed classes or events. Everyone had a blast. Highly Recommended.
