One of the best things about the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area is that it is super kid friendly. I road tripped with my son at least four times to the area and we have great memories from those trips. One includes fishing off Okaloosa Island...More

We walked out in December. Not a lot of fishing going on. One pelican acting like he was asleep but as soon as a little fish was reeled in, he swallowed it--hook and all! (They got it out okay.) This walk is 1/4 mile each...More

the sand is white and pristine. Not too crowded but good people watching. Some hotels rent umbrellas or you can bring your own.

We love visiting Okaloosa Island pier every time we come to the area! We have seen countless dolphins, so many sea turtles, and a 10 foot hammerhead shark! The birds on the pier are fun to watch as well as the fisherman. The Dolphins are...More

No trip to the island is complete without a trip to the pier. Great place to fish or simply go in the evening to watch a beautiful sunset.

I'm not really sure there are any condos by the pier. None you could walk to. It's all hotels by the pier.

Fireworks: Okaloosa Island Pier vs Baytowne Wharf (2 Replies)
We will be in Sandestin in a week. We would love to see some fireworks. I saw that on Tuesdays, we could see them at the Sandestin Village of Baytowne Wharf, and on Wednesdays we could see them at the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier. We will be staying much closer to Baytowne Wharf, but I was just curious if one show was a lot better than the other. Thanks!

On Thursday nights there is also a show Harborwalk in Destin. Last year we went to the one at Harborwalk and Ft. Walton and they were both good, the one in Ft. Walton seemed to last longer. I have never been to the one at Baytowne Wharf.

We arrived on Okaloosa Island right at lunch time on Friday. Being too early to check in to our condo at Destin West, we went to The Boardwalk and had lunch at The Crab Trap. We sat outside and had an awesome view of beach. The kids went down the play on the beach while we waited for our food. I had the shrimp po boy and my husband had the oyster po boy. Both were great! The kids had a burger and chicken strips which they barely ate because they were too excited to get back on the beach, lol....More

okaloosa island pier (2 Replies)
Can anyone offer opinions on the fishing pier in okaloosa island. We were thinking of taking a charter, but with lots of small kiddos, and novice adults, we thought the pier my provide a better introduction to fishing, without the worries of seasickness. But I went on the pier's website, and numerous posters on the message on that website state that the pier is not family friendly, that no rules or regulations are enforced, and that the crowd there is kind of scary. Any info would be...More

I've only gone out on the pier once... everyone was doing their own thing. The serious fisherman isn't always real attractive looking, I guess. I suppose it might be worth a shot to check it out & see what you think, tho.... otherwise, take dramamine before you take the charter....you might get more instruction on the charter.
