- Pat PBrandon, Florida62 contributionsQuaint, lovely beach!Unfortunately, we visited Okaloosa off season in December when days are not the best to enjoy the sea; however I could only imagine how nice it would be in the summer months. I loved the area! Friendly people, amazing beach and awesome scenary. We took a brief stroll through the Boardwalk, most of the stores and restaurants were not opened at the time but had a chance to sip some Margaritas, accompanied by chips at Rockin Tacos. We also enjoyed chatting with some of the local clientele for great tips for a next visit.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 3, 2024
- Hooked_on_travel77Franklin, North Carolina3,195 contributionsNice stop but typical. Restaurants were good! Pier charges $$$.The shops are your usual beach type stores. Yawn.... We really enjoyed the Rockin Tacos restaurant (decent prices) and we also enjoyed the Crab Trap restaurant despite very high prices. The food was very good at both. The pier is cool but they charge $2 to walk it. We guess it's too keep the 'so-so' folks away, and we get that, but we didn't bother. Lots of parking and the place was dead in early February.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 14, 2024
- tenntravelguyHendersonville, Tennessee452 contributionsNice beach to visit lot of trafficIn the pan handie of Florida I would recommend visiting Fort Walton Beach or Destin rather than Panama City. The boardwalk is very nice but was quite crowded this past weekend. There are several nice eating establishments and things to do while there. The sand was hot and the sea water was somewhat discolored with it being overcast but on pleasant temperature days I can see it being a nice place to spend time with family.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2024

We were here in June, 2019 and stayed at the Holiday Inn Resort, right down the street within walking distance. We walked to the Boardwalk and visited all the shops, and ate at the restaurant there, on the beach deck. Lots to see and do.

Okay...so, we decided we wanted to walk on the fishing pier and after that we walked around this mostly deserted shopping - dining area. Perhaps in the summer months - in season, this may be a fun and active spot but to us, it just gave us the creeps.

several choices of restaurants. Some fun gift shops scattered around. Feels like it could use a little TLC but overall a fun place to stop in. Great view of the beach and ocean.

The rental company on the beach that rents the chairs and umbrellas employ the rudest people. My husband and I were sitting under one of the umbrellas…we had been for hours, we were unaware that they were rentals due to the fact there were NO signs saying so. Some “employee” walked up to us and asked us if we wanted to rent the chairs. We said we were did not know they were rentals and that we would not like too. ( Plus we were not going to give some random guy who walked up to us money. We would have rented the umbrella from the booth if it was clearly labeled) The employee then told us to “get out” not to please move or anything remotely polite….just get out. I told him that in the future it would nice if he remembered to be polite to potential customers and he told me he did not need to be nice to me because I was not a customer. We won’t be going back and I will be spreading the word no one should rent from people who treat other people like trash. Maybe you should train your employees to be respectful if you actually want to stay in business.

Paying the $2 to walk on the boardwalk was worth it! You get an amazing view! But walking around in the shops/ resteraunt area is a waste of time. It's smelly, there is no ventilation, and it consists of only 4 resteraunts and 2 shops.

We go to the boardwalk at least once a week, either by walking or driving for the food and the fun little souvenir shops. There are also sand volleyball courts and a small playground.

What is the water on Okaloosa like now, any sea grass or jellyfish? Will be visiting in 3 weeks.
Written September 17, 2021
Absolutely! There is a nice campground at the north end, right next to an Elks Lodge, that you would enjoy. It overlooks the bay, which has beautiful sunsets.

How long will the sea grass last? Tried to go swimming, but it was like soup☹️

Seaweed comes and goes. We have visited at various times of the year and sometimes it's thick and other times the tide has not brought it in. I do have to say this. My daughter has a rare skin disorder that we have been sending her to specialists for and it will not clear up. Our last trip with the heavy seaweed, her skin started to give her relief for the first time in two years. Of course when we return home her skin disorder worsened. So seaweed and salt can be a beautiful thing.

What is rental cost for beach chairs and umbrella around Perdido Key?
Written June 18, 2017
Perdido Key is about 2 hours west of Okaloosa Island. Perdido Key is even west of Pensacola, only a mile or so from the Alabama line, just across the water from Orange Beach, AL.

What restaurants would be willing to cook your catch? Would there be an extra charge in doing so?
Written April 3, 2017
A. J.'s will cook you catch, but it is not on the Boardwalk at Okaloosa. It is in Destin Harbor at Harborwalk. That's about 5 miles east of Okaloosa.

Are there hotels in the area that you would recommend? Looking at last minute 4 day trip.
Written March 19, 2017
Wyndham (Wyndham Garden Fort Walton Beach) has a great facility on Okaloosa Island, and the Hampton Inn-Fort Walton Beach is quite nice there. As another TripAdvisor member said, it is actually only a 2-3 minute drive to the Boardwalk from these hotels mentioned. Destin is a little more of a drive. It is only 6 minutes to the west part of the island that contains Destin, but their motels are widely scattered over a 10-45 minute drive from the Boardwalk!

Thanks for your review; Did you see dogs being walked on leash,or was there a no pets rule there?
Written February 10, 2017
I know dogs are not allowed on public beaches here but I truly don't know the ruling as regards to the fishing pier. As it is a popular tourist stop with several restaurants, stores, and the Gulfariam, I sort of doubt they would permit pet dogs on the pier. Of course service dogs are welcome everyplace down here so that's not a concern. You might want to leave Fido with a sitter. Most of the vet clinics here are set up to entertain Fido while the family is enjoying the beach.
