Shell Point Retirement Community's massive 43' x 41' model train display...

Shell Point Retirement Community's massive 43' x 41' model train display features several running trains and hundreds of recognizable miniature geographic landmarks. The popular attraction is open from October through April each year, with free tours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., conducted by Shell Point resident volunteers who enjoy model railroads as a hobby and want to share their interest with others. Landmarks to explore include Tallahassee's old Capitol Building, Pensacola freight yards, the Gainesville Gator Bowl, Walt Disney World, Kennedy Space Center with an orbiting space shuttle, Everglades National Park, the Sanibel Lighthouse, and even Shell Point Retirement Community. Be sure to check out the realistic "burning" house in St. Petersburg, with simulated smoke pouring out of the windows. The Gulf Coast Model Railroad has welcomed visitors since 1973, with Shell Point resident volunteers who serve as conductors on each journey "around the state." Ticket booth Millie welcomes more than 3,000 guests each year, many who write complimentary comments after their free tour (donations are appreciated).

This place is run by volunteers that live in Shell Point. They really know their stuff and are very friendly. We have been there twice and found it a good afternoon activity. It's a lovely place to visit. Make sure you go between 1:30-3:30 PM, M-W-F only!

Very cool, don't miss the experience. The retired worker volunteers are passionate about what they do here. I suspect that the trains, the platforms and the towns they've built has been out of their own pockets. Be generous with the donations.

While visiting relatives at Shell Point we visited this remarkable model railroad .The exhibit is located on site at Shell point and is built and operated by dedicated volunteers and a free( donation accepted ) experience. It is a miniaturized and stylized representation of the railroad history of Florida based in the 50's and 60's period with in addition to a... What a gem of a spot right off the Sanibel Causeway!! Only open Mon. Wed or Fri from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. Plan your vacation around these hours!! Run by volunteers, this exhibit is all about model trains and the history of Florida. We asked for the shortened 15 min. version. We learned so much and enjoyed the seniors so... More

On our recent (Nov16) vacation to Ft Myers Beach we made sure we stopped by Shell Point's Train Room. My wife came across this gem on the internet and since we're model railroaders we wanted to stop by. The layout, in the shape of the state of Florida is absolutely wonderful! The hosts were very informative and walked us through... More

Beautifully displayed model trains and popular areas throughout the State of Florida. Created and maintained by the railroad buffs of Shell Point Retirement Community. Several trains run throughout the state covering places like Ft. Myers, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and the Panhandle. We especially liked the added buildings, people and animals. It's a must see and is free. Great docents... More

This Model Railroad is closed until Fall. There are several docents and it is really amazing to see all those model trains going all over the state of Florida. Many of the sites were hand made. Check for time of visits.

This is a hidden gem. It is in the Shell Point Retirement Community main building. You have to go through a gate house which can be tedious. However once you are there you see a train layout designed like the state of Florida with tourist attractions placed in their appropriate geography..The recreation of the Florida areas is a history lesson... This is quite a set up, I've never seen anything like it! Looks like a lot of painstaking work has gone into this display. If you love model trains, this is a must see,and you can also check out the stamp room just a few feet away where residents have raised almost 1000,000.00 for missionaries by clipping used stamps!
