Absolutely a five-star water tour. Departed from dock across the railroad tracks from the visitors center. Tour was 2.5 hours from start to finish and narration provide by the captain was non-stop & informative. Approximately 60 people on an oversized pontoon boat made for a comfortable trip during high winds and white capped waters. Comfortable seating, bottled water readily available & a restroom on board as well. Went from downtown Fernandina beach north to a point half way up Cumberland Island & returned. Saw wild horses, pelicans & numerous other wildlife along the way. Staff was helpful by ensuring all were comfortable & offered blankets to those freely chilly after our mid-morning departure. Really a class act attraction and highly recommend you place it at the top of your bucket list of items to do when you visit Fernandina Beach next time.

Amelia River Cruises & Charters is amazing. I dealt with them for several months, through planning, booking, rebooking (family medical emergency postponed our trip) and then the tour itself. Every single person I’ve dealt with has been professional and friendly. And the tour itself…oh my!! We enjoyed the Beach Creek tour so much! Our boat pilots were top notch and really know how to share historical info in an entertaining and educational way. I’ve visited Cumberland Island a few times but never had explored it this way - seeing it from a totally different perspective was awesome. We saw dolphins, an alligator and huge variety of bird life. The late fall afternoon sun on the marshes was breathtaking.
This excursion was part of my mother’s 80th birthday celebration and she says it was her favorite thing! I agree - I’m so glad that we did this with her. Thank you Amelia Island Cruises for providing us with a family memory that we’ll all cherish.
If a trip to Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island is planned, be sure you include one of Amelia Island Cruises trips in your itinerary. You won’t regret it!

What a great cruise experience with the Amelia River Cruise company. The guides talked almost the entire way and made so many interesting comments about what we were seeing and added historically relevant details. They were funny and able to keep the whole boat engaged on a 2 1/2 hour tour. I have been on other cruise trips with guides, and these guys were just incredibly talented and offered so much more than a canned talk. They even thought of comfort for the people on board by providing warm blankets and offering the plastic covers to keep the spray off the seats. Highly recommend the experience as a way to know more about the island, people, culture, and history. Had to buy some local shrimp after after we got off the boat, and agree that Mayport shrimp is sweeter than the grocery store fish brought over from international farms.

We have been on numerous cruises with Amelia Island Cruises over the years; from adult sunset cruises to family-friendly historical outings, The company never fails to satisfy. The friendly and experienced staff are a key ingredient to the success of these experiences. This week we accompanied family friends who were celebrating their mom’s 80th birthday. It was their first time out on the River and it made her day very special. Captain Kevin’s grasp of local history and lore, and his close family ties to the area, made for a fun, fact-filled morning adventure. And it wasn’t that he simply had a lot of facts at his fingertips, which he did, but it was his love of the subject matter, the cultural and social context delivered in a personable way that left everyone feeling connected to the experience. We’ll be back again, I’m sure.

We went on the 2 1/2 hour cruise. The "captain" and his brother were locals to the island going back generations. So he was very informative and told many entertaining stories about growing up on the island. We learned so much about Amelia Island and Cumberland Island. One woman's hat blew off her head into the water. The captain turned the boat around so his brother could scoop up the hat with a net. It was a great tour.

We did the 2.5 hour Cumberland Island cruise. The boat Captain & the narrator were fantastic! They gave us the history of Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Fort Clinch & Cumberland Island while pointing out dolphin, wild horses, homes & ruins of the rich & famous (Cumberland Island) & keeping us clear of the added bonus-a nuclear submarine leaving Kings Bay for a deployment! Even though it was a bit windy & there was a pretty good chop in the sound, everyone arrived back at the dock safe & sound! Highly recommend this tour!

Shout Out to Captain John and Captain Benny! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We found it to be informative, interactive, and downright fun! We appreciate the joint effort of both captains, to create a memorable experience, incorporating history, with fun facts, dolphin sightings, and many interesting birds including a bald eagle. The highlight of the tour for us was seeing the wild horses on the beach, initially due to the high tides the horses were not seen. We expressed to both Capt. John/Benny that we were really hoping to see the horses and they both encouraged us not to lose hope. On the way back to Amelia Island, the horses were on the beach and Capt. John allowed time for us and the rest of the group to thoroughly enjoy the experience and capture photos and videos, of the horses on the beach. Captain John also elaborated on the history the horses and identified a family of horses on the beach. This was truly a priceless experience!
My husband and I were on Amelia Island for less than 24 hours and wanted to experience as much as possible and this cruise allowed that to happen. WE would highly recommend the 2.5-hour Cruise, if you're lucky you'll get Captain John and Captain Benny!

PMy husband and I took the sunset cruise Oct 13. We expected a breathtaking sunset and we were not disppointed. But we also enjoyed the captain's narration including history of the shrimpimg industry and the amazing history of pirating in this area. We were also treated to a view of Cumberland Island and saw a couple of wild horses. This activity was well worth the money and we would highly recommend

Even though it might have been too cold to see a lot of wildlife ( we did see a few dolphins and the wild horses far away) , it was still a fun boat trip. Both John and Nate were extremely knowledgeable about the area and made it very entertaining as well. We learned all about Cumberland Island, Ft. Clinch and the whole area. They were fabulous guides and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting this area!

Delightful excursion on the Amelia River at Sunset. The Captain of the vessel was extremely knowledgeable about Cumberland Island history and diligent about pointing out the wild horses and provided photos of the vast estate homes and celebrities entertained. While we didn’t bring children, others did and he allowed the children to “drive” the craft to their delight. Very good family atmosphere on the boat and thoughtful history of the industry of the area, both in the past and currently. Highly recommend!

Would anyone recommend we take both the Cumberland Island tour AND the Sunset BYOB tour or are they very similar (information and course wise)?
Melanie B
Fernandina Beach, FL6 contributions
They are two entirely different tours. The 2 and a half hour morning tour that departs each morning at 10:00am cruises along Cumberland Sound and is full of history about Amelia as well as Cumberland Island. Of course you are bound to see nature on all of our tours. The Adult BYOB Cruise will take a different route through the marshes with very little if any history. There will be a wonderful live band aboard with some of the islands favorite local musicians performing, all the while taking in a beautiful sunset. So, in answer to your question, yes it is worth taking both of those tours.

Are the curtains down on a chilly day or only when raining? Planning on Friday or Saturday - expected to be low 50s.

We put them down when it gets chilly too. We always have clean blankets onboard as well. Hope you were able to join us!
Which cruise do you recommend? The Cumberland Island or Beach Creek? We will be taking the ferry to Cumberland Island the day before.

Either is enjoyable ... the Cumberland Island one gives a little more history of the Carnegies and Kennedy's plus history about Fort Clinch.
I personally prefer the Cumberland Island one!
Can I bring an 8 month old on the boat?

Children 3 and under ride free on all of our narrated tours. However, we only allow adults age 21 and up on our Adult Twilight BYOB Cruises. I might recommend the Family Friendly Sunset Tour as a first trip since it is our shortest at only 1 hour long.

How smooth is the ride? Did anyone have any seasickness?
Melanie
Fernandina Beach, FL
This cruise only goes in the river so for the most part it is a very smooth ride. However if you happen to come on a windy day the sound can be a little choppy. We only cross the sound for a bout 5 minutes though.
