- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsVery ScenicThe Jebel Shams are unlike anything we've seen before and were a short trip from Muscat. To access the area you should use a 4x4 vehicle but it may be worthwhile to get an expert guide so you can truly enjoy the scenery. Bring good food, snacks and water if you plan to visit here and don't go after the rains or if there is rain in the forecast because the conditions could change quickly and the roads are not that great.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 28, 2023
- HilaryJLeatherhead, United Kingdom10 contributionsBalcony WalkAn excellent walk which really isn’t dangerous in any way. Good views of the canyon and seeing the abandoned homes at the end was fascinating. How did they manage to live there? 4km each way. Took us 2 hours in total but we were rushing a bit due to setting off later in the afternoon and wanted to get back before the sun set. The afternoon is a good time to go as you are then walking in the shade.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 2, 2023
- AucklandWizAuckland, New Zealand2,187 contributionsBeautiful, Vast Views With Beautiful SunsetsWe did not arrive at Jebel Shams until late afternoon as we were on a tight schedule. We wound our way up the mountain to Oman's highest mountain, (Mountain of the Sun; 3009m), which is best known for the view into the 'take your breath away' deep Wadi Ghul lying alongside it. There were only a couple of people there (camping right on the edge) so we and the goats really had the place to ourselves. The view was vast and deep and then we got to see the sunset which was just beautiful. If we had had more time we would have done the Balcony walk, and maybe even have found accommodation up in that area but time was so limited.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 5, 2024
- Yorkshire Lad - The OriginalYork, United Kingdom1,642 contributionsOur little car made it!!!!So glad we “gambled” and risked travelling on the 8km unpaved section of road, which, trust me CAN be driven on carefully if you only have a 2WD vehicle. The end result is a geographical and geological marvel which really does in my opinion rival places like the Colca Canyon in Peru and the Grand Canyon in the USA. We stopped 3km before the road ends at Wadi Ghul, so we could walk and check out a couple of viewpoints without the crowds which was a good thing to do. Then, we followed the trail down. Me stopping half way as I suffer from vertigo, but my wife skipped along the whole mountain path and saw some amazing views. This is a must do and I hope dear reader you do as I doubt you will be disappointed.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 30, 2024
- GloriaBaltimore, Maryland169 contributionsFun Hike with Beautiful ViewsIt's called the Grand Canyon of Oman and while a bit smaller than the real thing, the canyon is beautiful and worth a trip to see. We booked a day trip to the Nizwa Fort and Jebel Shams with Oman Raw Explorer through instagram (@oman_raw_explorer). Abdullah, our guide, planned our day so that we got to the fort by late morning, with plenty of time to explore it and the souk as well, and then we at Jebel Shams and were hiking the rim when the sun was just right, not shading the canyon. I would rate it a moderate hike. It took us about 2.5 hours to do the full hike (about 9km or 5.6 miles) but we did one section pretty quickly, so it could take up to 3 hours. It's worth the time as the views are gorgeous.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024

- Brittany_11_10Los Angeles, California1,769 contributionsBeautiful part of OmanBeautiful part of Oman. Worth the drive from Muscat, or easy enough to add as part of a road trip (as we did). If you're into hiking, this is your spot. We hiked the Balcony Walk and really enjoyed it. We carried our toddler in a backpack carrier and it was easy enough. Just bring everything you need if you do that hike (or any others), as there aren't really any facilities near the hikes: food, water, and sun protection.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 26, 2024

Jabal shams is incredible and was a highlight of our trip to Oman. The balcony trek has some of the best scenery I've ever seen anywhere in the world, there is a reason they call it the grand canyon of Arabia!
The purpose of this review is to confirm that jabal shams is accessible by 2WD. We were concerned having read reviews online that only 4WD was possible, this isn't the case. We drove up in a 2WD 1.6L nissain sunny which we rented from muscat (this was a brand new car). The first section of the drive is tarmac but very steep, this is probably the most challenging and will require you to take it slow / drive in a low gear. The off road section of the journey isn't too bad, it isn't steep but does involve some sharp turns. Again, just take it easy and use a low gear when necessary. My only advice would be not to try this in adverse weather conditions, we drove in perfect sunshine and I don't think there had been any rain in a while so the track was dry.

One needs a 4x4 car for the last 10 km or so. The view is majestic. There is a huge canyon. The climate is quite crisp and chilling during the winter months. The sunset and sunrise make the sky shine in all radiance.

Beautiful place for camping .We camped opposite to Jebel sham resort .The road in between for appx 7 Kms from down till the Jebel sham view point is bad there is no concrete road .Nights will be chilly we camped in January end the temperature falls down till 10 degrees Celsius so make Sure to keep warm clothes and good sleeping bags or arrangements due to the chilly weather and hard rocks .The tent will be watery due to dew.Morning is warm and beautiful with the mountain goats visiting you for food😀.Make sure to fuel up your tank and keep all necessary items as there is nothing available .A SUV will be highly recommend for drive but we have seen sedan also driving to the point.

We have made one of or maybe even the most popular hiking trail in Oman- W6 Balcony Trail (Jabal Shams). Just put this in Google and you will be navigated to parking which is beginning of hike. I reccommend 4×4 SUV car but we have seen also normal sedan cars. Then you just need to drive much slower to get there and more watch out. Hike takes about 3/4 hours both ways. Views are amazing, wild goats on the way so cute. Just take 1/1 .5 l water with you. Hike is quite easy. Go to same end. If you see first buildings of abandoned village, then go extra 15 minutes to same end to see great view on canyon. Definetely I can warmly reccommend going there.

Not too far from muscat, around 2 hrs drive, you will reach this village on top of Jabel Shams, a unique place with cool air and relaxed life. You can see pomegranate trees and vineyards in front of local houses. There is a public park, good to spend an evening, and few archaeological sites. You will need a 4x4 to reach there.

Is it possible to drive to the starting point of the W6 balcony walk with a normal 2WD sedan car? How many kilometres are not tarmacked?
Written December 15, 2019
Did the balcony walk, amazing hike. Like a lot of People we read different reviews on how to reach the site/hotels (dangerous road, do you need a driver and/or 4WD ect). We just (March 2020, dry weather) got back driving ourselves and YES you can reach the resorts (eg sama heights) by 2WD and YES you can also reach the balcony walk start point by 2WD. Just use your common sense and use low gears to slow down going downhill.

If you have a proper car and put your light on it shouldn’t be a problem if you drive careful until you’re on normal road again. Enjoy!!

Ciao, sapreste indicarmi dov'è il luogo panoramico del Wadi ghul? Nel tour che sto organizzando devo prenotare l'alloggio per le notti in montagna e vorrei capire quanto distante si trova, grazie! Cristina

Hi there I am interested in your itinerary whereby you stayed at Misfat and then did the Jebel Shams walk. Was the walk the Balcony walk. We are planning on hiring a 2wheel drive car but have experience on gravel roads. Is it possible to go both Jebe Sham and Misfat by two wheel drive car?Is the road to Msfat paved or gravel?
Thanks we are looking forward to our holiday in the area

Hi there,
Would you recommend a guide for the W4 trek or is the route clear enough without one? Struggling to find any decent maps for the area also so if anyone has a recommendation that would be great.
Kind regards,
David
Written April 27, 2018
More or less straight route. Ask locals. There’s a village at he top from where the trek starts. Once you get up there, rest is easy to find. Take water and head cover. A hydration pack is ideal. No food water or restrooms. Pure nature. Give yourself at least 6 hours.
The trek itself, once you start, is marked with a tricolor striped monogram (like a European flag) on rocks in clearly visible spots along the way. These markers keep you on the straight path. Just follow those and you’ll be fine.

Buongiorno a tutti voi visitatori dell' Oman!
Grazie a tutti, Nabila
P.S: il viaggio è prossimo!! Devo mettere a punto una pianificazione!!

Ho visto anche autovetture, ma l'ultimo tratto è abbastanza dissestato. il fuoristrada è più indicato.

Can you hire a driver with a 4x4 from a parking lot / gas station that can be reached with a saloon car? How much would that cost approx.?
Do you need a 4x4 to go to Misfat al Abriyeen?
Thanks!
