I saw the announcement for the Laura Ingalls Wilder exhibit and wanted to see it even though I knew nothing about the Enterprise Heritage Center & Museum. What a delightful surprise. Two display rooms and a restored bathroom were open for viewing. The first room, the Laura Ingalls Wilder exhibit was interesting with artifacts of the period on display complimenting the information boards. The makeshift classroom was a nice touch with student seats from various years. The second room was history boards about Enterprise. The docents were pleasant and knowledgeable. Overall an enjoyable 2.5 hour outing. I plan to return for their Saloon Series chats.

This museum was the old school house for Enterprise and was moved down the street. Volunteers devoted tons of hours to have this happen and fix it up. Someone donated the land.
Clyde Butcher will have a show there and there are talks scheduled by different people. It is worth going to and is not to far off the bike trail. They have a chili cook off every year to raise money. Run by some very dedicated volunteers I am so glad they saved it.

The staff at the museum was eager and helpful in answering questions and providing interesting details about the areas past. The lecture on the St. John's River was fabulous and educational and enlightening. I learned much about the ecology of the river, the animals who dwell there and the need for preservation.

Before you hit the trails and parks in the area (of which there are quite a few) make a point of visiting this restored schoolhouse. Enterprise is a small, independent and proud community that treasures its history and it shows by the work done to present this very appealing peek into the past. For history buffs it is a must. Great for the kids to see what it was like for their counterparts nearly 100 years ago.

Ever wonder what it was like to attend school back in the 30's, 40's or 50's? This museum is the old school that was used for years in the Enterprise area and you can get a feel for what it was like because the building is in great shape and they have set up one room classroom style. They also have old black and white pictures from "back in the day" which will add to your enlightenment. My sister, who is a school teacher, and I really enjoyed taking a look at the past. You will too. Also keep in mind that Enterprise area was the original tourist area of Florida before roads were accessible to South Florida. Wealthy travelers from the North took steamships from Jacksonville down the St. Johns river where hotels awaited them in the Enterprise/Sanford areas. When you arrive spend some time driving the scenic route on the northside of Lake Monroe. You can see the natural beauty of Florida as part of your visit to this museum.

My family and I went to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Heritage Center and had a great time! The kids really enjoyed learning about the old time school class rooms while my better half and I were able to take in the history of Enterprise. The staff was very friendly and informative and I will absolutely visit again!
