The guys at Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak are the nicest and sweetest guys you could meet. They are helpful, know their stuff, and make you feel at ease. I was very scared to Kayak... I am not a small girl and it was nerve-racking to worry about whether I could get in the kayak, and then if it would sink once I was in! They took the time to make me feel safe and helped me the whole way... From the guy running everything to the gentlemen that took us to the dock and helped us in our boats. When we were done with our kayak trip down the river, they were there to help us out of the boats and made sure I was still okay. The kayaking was beautiful too... The kayaks are great, the river is gorgeous and serene, and so many creatures to look at. But really, the crew at Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak are what sold the day. I don't want to rent my kayaks from anyone else.

I have been meaning to post about my experience with this outfitter and Rainbow River for quite some time. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience most definitely warrants one. I had never kayaked before and I had a fear of small boats. I had decided to finally face my fears and booked a long-weekend in the area with the intent on surprising my partner and one of the things I had planned for us to do was go kayaking. I called a couple of days in advance to book the kayaks. It can be difficult to get a hold of these guys because they only are available to take calls after 2 PM and their phone lines are busy. That being said, I was persistent and kept calling back until the owner answered the phone. His name is escaping me for now. I explained to him how nervous I was about being a first-time kayaker, mostly because I was afraid I would tip over the kayak. I can swim, so it's not like it's even a rational fear, but it is still a fear for me none-the-less. He told me he would recommend his sit-in-kayak and that I would NOT tip over and would literally have to TRY to tip it, for it to tip. He told me I could take one out and paddle around a bit to see if I felt comfortable before even embarking. He also said that if we tried kayaking and didn't have an amazing time, he would refund the entire cost of the trip! I was sold and I reserved two sit-in kayaks for a Monday. He recommended against kayaking on the weekends because it's tubing season and the river would be full of tubers that we would have to navigate around. I took his advice. My partner and I ended up being more than an hour early for a reservation. I asked for the gentleman I had spoken to, but he was off that day. Instead, Alan helped us out. He was able to accommodate getting us out at an earlier time, which was great. He showed us all a big map of the river and explained where we should go. Then we were off. We were both nervous. We took the shuttle to the put-in at KP hole. You have to pay a small entrance fee directly to KP hole. Then the very nice staff help you get into the kayaks, give you a short paddling demonstration and push the kayaks into the water. As soon as the boat glided into the water, I felt completely relaxed and safe in it. Paddling was not hard at all. The water was crystal clear. I did manage to get soaked from water dripping off my paddles, but that's probably because I am an amateur. Besides, it's hot as heck in Florida, so that water dripping into the boat, felt great. We decided to paddle upstream a little to see the deepest spring. We were feeling good and confident and saw some people kayaking off into a little shallow canal. We decided to head into there as well. The water is very shallow and several people had tied their kayaks up to wade in the water there. The sand is white and fish are everywhere. It's a beautiful little detour and I am so pleased we found it because it was one of the highlights of the trip. Turning the boat around was a bit challenging for me since I was still new to the whole concept of braking and backing the boat and I got hung up in the trees a couple of times. But, I got in and and out of the kayak with no problems. Still feeling confident, I decided we should try to continue going upstream to the headspring. We continued on our way, stopping almost at the headsprings to beach our kayaks and use the facilities. We got back into the boats and paddled up to the headspring, which is absolutely gorgeous and crystal clear. It was worth the extra effort to paddle up there. After that paddle, we started to leisurely make our way downstream. I should add that we had seen TONS of birds, a family of otters, fish and turtles. We also saw butterflies and frequently had mayflies and dragonflies hitchhiking on our legs and the kayaks. We never saw alligators, but we did hear them! The downstream paddle took a lot longer than anticipated. It was 7 hours of kayaking--great, comfortable kayaks. Majestic, peaceful scenery...sweet, caring staff. NOW I am obsessed with kayaking! I absolutely LOVED my experience!

We spent a week on the Rainbow River, renting a place that had 20 kayaks but nary a canoe. My wife and I are "canoe people" -- who knew there were canoe people. The very nice folks at Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak set us up with a great canoe, one that would accommodate a grandchild from time to time, and we enjoyed many hours of wonderful paddling during our week's stay. We appreciated their willingness to answer questions and also delivery and pick-up were great. Thanks so much and we look forward to our next visit to the Rainbow, secure in knowing where we will rent our canoe.
