Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich moved to Crystal River in 1989 and began teaching scuba diving and offering manatee snorkel tours. At that time there were only 3 hotels, one independent shop, and about 100 manatees that came to Citrus County in the winter months. Since then, Manatees have increased to over 1000 manatees in Citrus County alone in the winter, and there is an average population of about 35 manatees that remain in Kings Bay in the summer months. The Manatee Awareness Program was set up by Bird and Diana Oestreich in 1990 with the dive agency NAUI, then PADI, and now SDI offers the same program. They offer quality and personalized manatee tours with experienced and insured boat captains, all of which are at Divemaster level or higher. Manatee Tours average about 3 hours, but they do not have a set time in which they "pull" the customers out of the water in order to run another tour. All tours include drinks and snacks. Private tours include a full meal. Bird's Underwater Dive Center is located on the Kings Bay of Crystal River. You do not have to drive to a separate location to be on the water. Bird's Underwater is located on the dock behind the Dockside Trading Company. We are next to Charlies Fish House restaurant, and walking distance from Crackers restaurant. The Dockside Deli is located in the same parking lot. Main Street or Citrus Avenue is 2 blocks to the south, the Crystal River Mall is 1/4 mile north.

It’s been my girlfriends dream to be a marine biologist, and to take care of manatees. She’s never seen one in her life tho. So for her birthday I decided to take her to Birds Underwater to make that dream come to. The staff there were absolutely amazing, and made her life changing experience so much better. I highly recommend them!

We went on a tour after manatee season was over and although Rob and Jay warned that we may not see many, they were also determined to give us a fun experience. They both knew a lot about the local birds and fish we were seeing and that made the journey out into the bay all the more enjoyable. We had a 6 yr old boy in our party who had never been snorkeling before, but Rob did a fantastic job making him feel at ease and made sure he saw the manatee and calf we came across. We were able to float near the two manatees for an hour and just enjoyed being in their space, watching them eat their lunch - it was super cool. My sister-in-law said she couldn't have imagined our trip to Tampa without this experience and said it was her favorite part of the trip - this is after two all-inclusive days spent at Busch Gardens! We all had an amazing time. Highly recommend!

I was trying not to expect too much action with seeing manatees at the end of April but I was blown away by our experience! We did the 6 am tour on 4/24 & even our guide was surprised by the number of manatees we saw, at least 10 different ones including babies. The guide & boat captain were very nice making sure we were good in the water & having fun. The water was fairly clear, more so in some spots than others but that is something they have no control over. They made sure we were aware of all the things we could & could not do to ensure the safety of the manatees & not overwhelm, touch or crowd them. After being with the manatees we then went around the bend to an area where the water was deeper & a lot clearer just to have fun, snorkeling to see all the fish in that spot. Overall it was an amazing tour & so awesome to see these beautiful creatures up close.
