Members of Manatee Eco Tourism Association, Better Business Bureau, and Citrus County Tourism Division. Owned by Bill (Bird) and Diana Oestreich

since 1993. Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich moved to Crystal River in 1989 and began teaching scuba diving and offering manatee snorkel tours. At that time there were only 3 hotels, one independent shop, and about 100 manatees that came to Citrus County in the winter months. Since then, Manatees have increased to over 1000 manatees in Citrus County alone in the winter, and there is an average population of about 35 manatees that remain in Kings Bay in the summer months. The Manatee Awareness Program was set up by Bird and Diana Oestreich in 1990 with the dive agency NAUI, then PADI, and now SDI offers the same program. They offer quality and personalized manatee tours with experienced and insured boat captains, all of which are at Divemaster level or higher. Manatee Tours average about 3 hours, but they do not have a set time in which they "pull" the customers out of the water in order to run another tour. All tours include drinks and snacks. Private tours include a full meal. Bird's Underwater Dive Center is located on the Kings Bay of Crystal River. You do not have to drive to a separate location to be on the water. Bird's Underwater is located on the dock behind the Dockside Trading Company. We are next to Charlies Fish House restaurant, and walking distance from Crackers restaurant. The Dockside Deli is located in the same parking lot. Main Street or Citrus Avenue is 2 blocks to the south, the Crystal River Mall is 1/4 mile north.

We had an incredible tour with Captain Steve and Robbi. It is summer so there weren't tons of manatees, but they still managed to find some for us to swim with including a mother and her calf. Both guys were knowledgeable and helpful, and because we were first on the water the tour felt so private. If we're ever this... More

Did the mid morning trip. The water was murky and we saw nothing of the manatees in the big pool. We tried the tributaries later without success so this excursion was hopeless. The chap who drove the boat was apologetic and a thoroughly decent man but he had very little to work with except excuses. The water was so green... More

We always encourage our customers to read our conditions page or call before booking a tour. Below is a paste from our website. Every page has a "Summer Tour Conditions" button that states the following: SUMMER TOURS: You will be joining us during the "summer" manatee tours. A small population, primarily mothers and calves, stay in Kings Bay all year.... More

It is low season for manatees but Captain Steve was tenacious in finding one for us to observe. Instruction was clear, patient and concise. Robby was informative about the various birds we encountered. Both guys were professional yet humorous. Highly recommend Bird's Underwater.

My best friend and I planned for many months and met in Crystal River to do just this....swim with the manatees. Captain Mike and captain-to-be Rob were fantastic. They knew just where to locate the only manatee visiting that day, due to recent storms and other natural conditions. We were there in very early October which we were told right... More

Had a great time. Captain Mike was great. Didn't realize the best time to come is the winter months but we had a great time in September. Will definitely do it again!

We visited Bird's Underwater in Crystal River back before the summer. My kids are old enough now to get their Open Water scuba certifications. Working with Bird's was a perfect choice. We worked with Jeff. He's an experienced instructor who took the time to explain theory, technique and "tricks of the trade". My kids had a great time and we... More

Went out this morning with Captain Mike and Robby. They worked hard to find us some Manatees and they did find 5 for us. The other tour groups hadn't found any manatees and we had already swam with 5. Both were very knowledgable and answered all our questions. Happy we chose Bird's Manatee Tours. We will come back in Winter... More

We went to Crystal River to swim with the manatees, using Bird's Underwater for the tour. We had our adult autistic son with us, and were a little concerned about how he would do on the tour. As it turned out, he did great, even going into the water for a swim in his wetsuit! Our tour boat (6 person... More

I honestly recommend going on the first trip of the morning, being that you don't leave the harbor, it was really nice to be the only group on the water. The dive instructors were fantastic, We didn't see a hurd of Manatee's, but we did see a momma with her baby & then later in the dive we found a... More

Appreciate the 4 stars and sharing the positive aspects of a summer manatee tour. The management would just like to clarify that we do not offer breakfast on the $65 manatee tour, but we do offer an amazing spread compliments of the Brooklyn Dockside Deli on the semi private ( 6 passenger max ) $90.00 tour. This tour is a... More

Absolutely awesome, went today (the off season) and I got up close to manatees like I never expected. Although with guys like Robbie and Captain Steve with us I wouldn't have minded if we stayed on the boat all day. I'm a harsh critic with this sort of stuff believe me, but 10/10.
