OMG this place was beautiful and empty for January. Literally, no one was in sight. We had the beach to ourselves. They do not sift the sand here like they do on Clearwater Beach so shells are EVERYWHERE! We even found a full size horseshoe...More
When we moved from the hotel in Clearwater proper over to a condo in Sand Key, it offered a quiet, almost solitary beach, with lots of birds from pelicans to egrets. We saw many dolphins. It was to be on a quiet beach in the...More
We walked around from the road, saw a bunch of people fishing, and then walked on what was billed as a nature trail (but was really just a path through the middle of the park). A pleasant park and one that I might frequent if...More
The setting of this beach is a bit more rustic. Parking is only $5 for day with rest room facilities. There were some smaller sized shells.
It was a bit rough on the day we were there, so better for surfers. There are even signs...More
I prefer Sand Key over many other beaches in the area. Easy parking, not too crowded, great pic-nick areas and wide expansive beach make this a top pic for me. There is even some rare days when the waves are surf-able (my favorite passion) but...More
Much quieter and nicer than Clearwater beach.
Plenty of parking for just $5.
Restrooms, fresh water showers and pretty much everything you need from a beach, without the hoards of people and aggressive seagulls you find in Clearwater beach.

The fishing is good now that the RED TIDE is gone. I like to wade fish... away from people and I do wear water shoes, as with anywhere here we have crabs with stingers or barbs as we call them... and we the shuffle... few people know Tampa on the Gulf side is a huge breeding ground for sharks so no wading at night as thats when they stay close to the surf line. You don't want to meet mama.
Looking for ways to entertain my 12 year old boy and 8 year old girl. She's excited about seeing dolphins, finding great seashells, the Clearwater Aquarium, Lowry Park Zoo, and Busch Gardens. He wants to go snorkeling and fishing from a charter boat (their equipment, not ours) and see manatees. A few questions: 1. We're staying at the Marriott on Sand Key. Where would be the best place to take my daughter to collect shells: Sand Key? Clearwater Beach? Caladesi? Someplace else? 2. Do you...More

Sounds like ya'll will have a great time. Sand Key is just over a bridge from Clearwater Beach. It will be a very short drive or trolley ride, but probably too far to walk especially with young ones. I think the Marriott offers a van shuttle from the hotel to the beach on Sand Key, so that will be convenient. 1- Best place to get shells will probably be Caladesi and Honeymoon Island. But without a car and drive, you can check both Sand Key Beach, and as far North on Clearwater Beach as...More
Marco Island or Sand Key ???? (1 Replies)
Hi ! My family is looking to visit Florida May of 2012 and we are not sure where to visit. My Father and Mother in law are in their 50's and like a little beach but would also like some activities and site seeing. My wife, sister in law and myself can lay on the beach or by the pool all day with a cold drink and also like some good restaurants and activities. (Def wanna go Tarpon fishing with a fly) We will also have my daughter who will be 11 months and my 7 year old niece. We are looking to...More

Not sure how they do tarpon fishing here but I don't think it is like fly fishing. And you may have to hire a boat and captain that does fishing tours. For the other requirements try Clearwater Beach. Read that forum to see if it fits.
Sand Key to Aquarium without car (2 Replies)
hello, is it possible to get to the Aquarium without a car, from Sand key? Does the trolley go there, or are taxis readily available? Thanks very much
