The 10,000 island tour was splendid from every perspective. Captain Gary was an experienced boat captain who knew where to find the wildlife and how to encourage the dolphins to jump in the boat’s wake (exciting to see and video). We saw lots of birds including a dozen plus Oyster Catchers - more than I have ever before seen in one place. Captain Gary was a good story teller who told us about the murder Ed Watson and the books Peter Matthiessen wrote. The 10,000 islands are truly a special place and the Smallwood boat tour is the perfect way to see them.

I took a 2-hour sunset cruise with Captain Gary and it was a wonderful experience. I was traveling solo and one advantage of going through Smallwood Store was that visiting the museum offered an opportunity to meet and team up with another solo traveler (so we could share the minimum cost).

Gary is patient, kind, knowledgeable, skilled, funny, and great company. He's part of a historic family in the area, which adds a lot to the experience, and he knows a lot about wildlife. He also takes great joy in wildlife, which adds to everyone's enjoyment.

Took the 2 hour sunset boat tour with Captain Daryl. Saw tons of white pelicans wintering and even a few roseate spoonbills and ospreys and a few bottlenose dolphins that swam alongside the boat for a while. The captain is a local and he was very friendly and eager to share information about local history and the wildlife. He stopped at 2 islands. We even walked a little on Sandfly island and looked at the shells and the mangroves. We got back to the smallwood store just a few minutes before sunset to watch the sun go down. The store itself is interesting to walk through. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the chokoloskee bay area,

My parents and I took the Bloody Watson tour with Captain Gary. My parents are interested in historical homesteading and American frontier life so this was right up their alley. We learned a lot about Ed Watson and his sugar cane plantation, including his bloody end. Learning how many of the “10,000 keys” got their names and how much the area has changed over the years was fascinating.

The tour included getting out of the boat at the Watson Place and looking at what is left of it. The mangroves has reclaimed most of the area so there was less to see than I thought there would be but was neat nonetheless.

We also managed to see a lot of wildlife - dolphins, eagles, osprey, pelicans, ibis, a night heron, and more.

We all loved the tour (three adults; two 60+ yrs old, one 35) and would recommend it to ages teen and above. It may be a bit boring for children, except for the dolphins which you are in no way guaranteed to see.

We booked a sunset tour and ended up having a private excursion with Captain Gary. Loved every minute learning about the Everglades and 10,000 islands. He certainly knows his way around, having lived there all his life. He took us to Pavilion Island and it’s beautiful beach, the rookery where the birds went to roost at sundown, and was able to find the pod of dolphins he knew just about at sunset, so we got marvelous pictures of dolphins with a setting sun! He went back and had the dolphins flying along in the boat’s wake...so much fun! Don’t miss a tour with these folks...they know their way around.

We booked this after paddling the Turner River with Shurr Adventures who recommended it. Glad we took their advice! It’s a treat that booking includes access to the Smallwood Store Museum. We had the sunset tour to ourselves, cruising around the 10,000 islands in the golden light with curious dolphins, interesting fish and plentiful birds. Our captain had lived in the area all of his life, full of stories, myths and facts about the local flora and fauna. We stopped adrift near a rookery, watching all kinds of birds swoop in with a storm brewing on one side and the golden sunset over the gulf on the other. A really special memory. Highly recommended!

We took a 1 hour tour with Tristan Daniels as our guide. We ended up wishing we had booked a longer tour and we will certainly come back and request him again. Not only is he very knowledgeable about the history of the Everglades, but he was able to find quite a bit of wildlife for us to enjoy, including dolphins who followed our boat for a bit. We had a beautiful trip on the water and I highly recommend Tristan and Smallwood Boat Tours.

We did a 2-hour tour leaving from the Smallwood Museum and absolutely loved the tour. The islands are beautiful, and touring them by skiff with a knowledgeable guide was incredible. Darrel, our guide, was a trip himself - what a great guide and person!

Fabulous - the untouched, natural beauty of this area is so precious. We saw dolphins jumping, many different birds including roseate spoonbills, a huge stingray jumped very high out of the water. This tour is definitely worth the ride down to Chokoloskee Island. There are a number of tours to choose from. Since the wildlife changes with the seasons and tides, we are planning to go back in a couple of months to see it at time frame as well, and we will do a longer tour next time as it was so enjoyable. Also, the Smallwood Museum Store is a treat in itself. It's loaded with all sorts of antiques, photos from the are in the old days, a great place to go and browse.

What an interesting place among the 1000 Island area. Museum of local, period artifacts and boat ride around the islands and into open gulf make this a must do! Reservations highly suggested, customer service lacking.
