Fantastic experience
Mar 2021 • Friends
James hosted us today, March 30th, for a fantastic beginner blacksmithing course. We arrived at 9am and finished by around 6pm (we were told course times vary between groups). You can tell James loves what he does and he was an amazing instructor. You need no prior experience and James was constantly willing to demonstrate or explain how to do certain things. A full day playing with hot steel and I couldn't have asked for anything more! This is definitely worth a visit if you have any interest in metal work or blacksmithing! Thanks very much for the hospitality!!

My experience I had was exactly what I wanted. Beat my expectations! I traveled to be part of the introduction to blacksmithing course (highly recommend for those first timers). I learned so much and had tons of fun doing it! Worth the time for sure! You gain so much knowledge in so little time in comparison! James Is both a skilled blacksmith and a good technical teacher!

A Time to Connect
Nov 2020 • Friends
It’s hard to write down the experience that I had when I went out to visit James. Having gone with someone who had been already I felt slightly intimidated being the new guy. However, James was amazing and his shop allows for such a great experience whether new to Blacksmithing or returning your second time. The pace was slow, conversations relaxed. It really was a time to connect is so many aspects from the ring of the metal as your hammer hits it to the environment that surrounds you. Give Blacksmithing a chance and head out to see James.

My class was a gift from my wife - introduction to blacksmithing. I can honestly say it was a fantastic experience, the whole day. James is a super nice guy, very personable and makes you feel at ease right away. His instructional style was spot on. He imparts the skills on you then let's you work. He's there if you need him, but if you just want to get on and express yourself, then away you go. I was expecting something quite restrictive and formulated, but James encourages you to do as much as you like - no rigid syllabus - just work as long much as you like on the project you want to do. He's there to help, guide and encourage, but not to interfere. Perfect class in my mind.

The Beauty of Blacksmithing.
Sep 2020
This was a fabulous and incredibly fun Introduction to Blacksmithing. James is a natural educator-knowledgable, patient, and inspiring. I will certainly return as I’ve been inspired to learn more. I highly recommend this for everyone.

I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy this unique experience!

I took the "Intro to Blacksmithing" yesterday and had a pretty great experience! James takes you through the basics and demonstrates the techniques and steps and some metallurgy knowledge. It's a very interesting and enjoyable way to spend the day, in perhaps the most beautiful location of Alberta. I will be back to enjoy one of his other classes in the future.

Great introduction to blacksmithing!

Really fantastic experience! James was a great instructor and did a great job teaching us the basics, and was then really happy to give us creative freedom to do whatever we wanted to do. We ended up leaving after having made far more pieces than we expected, including a knife we made from railroad spikes!

Unforgettable Experience - I'll be back!
Jul 2020
I took "Intro to Blacksmithing" this past July and it was, by far, the highlight of my summer. I had been wanting to do this for a long time and I was not disappointed. James is an incredible teacher who not only takes the time to teach skills but explains the history and concepts around his craft, making this a fully immersive experience. I plan on going back as soon as I can to learn more and practice more - this time perhaps with a group of friends to do a private class.

Wicked experience! Introduction to Blacksmithing 2020
Jul 2020
James is a wizard with a hammer and an inspiration to anyone wanting to learn the craft of Blacksmithing! I took in a one day workshop with my brothers and dad to wet the lips of what it would take to build our own forge and start dabbling with a hammer. What we discovered was a master of his craft who got as excited about our imperfections as our accomplishments. A truly rewarding day and an outright blast that I would highly encourage anyone to take in.
