Nice beach if you can avoid the crowds..
Oct 2021
Read some great things about this beach, but it was soooo crowded when we visited (admittedly, on a Saturday afternoon). We found the last tiny patch of sand and posted up. Was hoping for some good snorkeling but the water was cloudy and the current was very strong. I will say that we drove past this beach later in the week (on a weekday, late morning) and it was empty.

Overall, if you plan your time well this could be a great beach day. Keep in mind, if traveling southbound on US1, you have to pay the $9 entrance fee before you can see how crowded the beach is. Might be worth passing the entrance and flipping around so you can peek down and scope out the crowds first.

Less attractactive, but still beutiful

The Calusa Beach is within the Bahia Honda State Park in BIg Pine Key. It is the other beach in addition to Sandspur beach, located on the other side of the park, with larger waves and still with some seagrass in the sand. It is being recovered after the Irma hurricane in 2017, but it is still beautiful. Worth seeing!

shame on state of Florida

This used to be an awesome place to go to before Irma. Gone are any SHADY picnic areas- so you will bake in the sun ! There are lots of rangers driving around in golf carts. It is a wasteland and threre is no urgency to restore this place for public. It is a disgrace. The bridge walk is strangely blocked off - so you cant see the old bridge from the top. It is so sad to see this resource tossed away. Also the old bridge is starting to disinegrate, slowly falling into the ocean. So sad.

However it was still had grass, but not nearly as much as the rest of the State Park. If you know the truth and set your expectations, you can still enjoy it.

Great beach and facilities

The beach is beautiful, and the changing rooms, bathroom stalls, parking lot and store are excellent to make your beach day as comfortable as it can be!

Calusa Beach is Ca-losed (Closed)
Jun 2019 • Couples
The entire beach, and roads and pull-offs to the beach, are closed since Irma. It's been two years already. If this were in Key West, Islamorda or Key Largo it would be fully open and accessible to the public. Shame on the County and State, as this beach was once one of the top ten beaches in the US!!!!

Beautiful quiet beach

This beach is at an awesome location. You can also take a free tour around the Bahia Honda area and learn about the area. There is a museum, snack bar, gift shop and many beach areas to select from

Beach time - Bahia Honda
Jun 2018
All the sand on the Atlantic side has been washed away but Calusa Beach is still intact and we really enjoyed this beach, very safe especially if you have little children.

Still damaged from hurricane Irma.
Apr 2018 • Couples
The beach was the only part of Bahia Honda that was open. It was in good shape and didn't experience any damage. The rest of the park was fenced off. They had portable restrooms on site. Went snorkling and saw hog fish, snapper, barracuda and a manatee.

Very small beach and swimming area with all of the Atlantic side fenced off. Not worth the admission fee.
