If you take the Amtrack train, what are the transportation options from the station? Will they let taxis drop you close by where you don't have to do extensive walking before you get to the house?

A cab ride from Wilmington's Amtrak station should take 15-20 minutes. It can drop you off at the Visitors' Center. (The cafe there is quite good.) There is a shuttle that takes you to the mansion.
